My wife and I recently purchased a Felicity Sunlit Cherry Bedroom Suite from Thomasville Furniture.  Our Thomasville saleswoman had led us to believe that our Thomasville furniture would be made in North Carolina, but when it was delivered we discovered that it was all made in China.  Thomasville had built its reputation on delivering high quality American-made furniture from North Carolina -- but it appears that those days are now long gone.

The fit & finish of our Thomasville made-in-China furniture was poor.  There's really no other way to describe it.  Our bedroom suite has a total of 28 drawers. Many drawers weren't centered in their openings; some drawers were recessed in too far, and other drawers extended out too far.  After 2 visits from Thomasville's repair people, we still have: 8 drawers not centered in their openings; 13 that extend out too far; and 7 that are recessed in too far.  Thomasville's repair people told us that our remaining problems were non-repairable.  So I guess we'll just have to learn to live with this poor quality.

When we purchased our furniture, we specifically asked our Thomasville saleswoman what kind of wood was used in its construction.  She told us it was "entirely cherry".  When we later asked Thomasville's repair people that same question, they looked at our furniture and readily identified over 5 different species of wood -- just one was cherry, and at least 2 were obscure, unidentifiable Chinese hardwoods.  What we actually received was quite different from what we paid for.  When we brought this to the attention of the management of our Thomasville dealer, they completely ignored our complaint.

At first glance, Thomasville's construction quality appeared to us to be quite good (i.e., dovetail drawers, etc.).  But in  places where it wouldn't be quite as obvious to a customer, some of the furniture's joints are held together with staples.  That doesn't instill much confidence that the furniture will last for more than a few years.  We would have expected to find that kind of cheap construction in bedroom suites that cost under $1,500 -- but not in a Thomasville bedroom suite that cost us over $5,000!

My wife's dresser arrived with a large 10" circular hole in the back of the cabinet.  Rather than repairing this damage "before" the furniture was shipped, Thomasville's factory instead tried to conceal the damage by screwing a large Masonite panel over the hole.  While Thomasville repaired the damaged back panel "after" we discovered it, the point is that Thomasville deliberately shipped severely damaged furniture to a customer with the hope that the damage would never be discovered.  That's not what one would expect from a quality "world class" furniture brand.

Thomasville's furniture is shipped with a Chinese "plasticized" finish.  In our experience, it attracts dust like a magnet and unlike a quality lacquered or varnished finish it's relatively soft and easily damaged.  According to Thomasville's "printed furniture care instructions" my wife and I are not suppose to allow synthetics, rubber, or plastics to rest on the wood finish as they may damage the finish.  That, of course, prohibits placing most lamps, clocks, radios, TVs, pens, etc. on top of your Thomasville furniture unless you first modify the bottoms of those products.

Everything at Thomasville seems to now be focused on charging its customers as much as possible, while at the same time cutting its costs as much possible.  Even the screws that hold the knobs to the drawers have been cost-cut.  Rather than extending the screws into the knobs by at least 3/8", they just barely touch the knob. The cost savings across an entire bedroom set has to be less than a dollar -- and yet amazingly Thomasville still went for it.

After contacting our local Thomasville dealer several times about many of these problems and receiving no satisfaction, my wife and I wrote to Ed Teplitz, president of Thomasville Furniture Industries -- and also to Ralph Scozzafava, CEO of  Furniture Brands International.  Furniture Brands International owns Thomasville, along with Broyhill, Lane, Drexel Heritage, Henredon, and Maitland-Smith.  Neither of them ever responded to us.  That pretty much sums-up our Thomasville customer satisfaction experience.

Thomasville is absolutely the worst store I have ever dealt with!  A corporate store at that!  Junk that took months to get, was actually MADE IN CHINA and was not even what was ordered.  Sleezy salespeople won't even call you back, once they make a sale. Credit card chargeback or small claims court is the only way to get a refund.  BEWARE TO ANYONE WHO THINKS THEIR STUFF IS QUALITY.  Fumes so bad the furniture was put outside to rot.  Shoddy craftsmanship, broken/defective parts, and mismatched pieces. JUNK, JUNK, JUNK at high price!  Don't buy their stuff.. go to Walmart instead, atleast you will know in advance what you will be getting.

I have held off buying for so long because I wanted to buy quality, but now that I finally have the money to 'feather my nest' almost all the companies are shipping stuff in from China.  The quality is just too spotty.  I don't have anything against China.  In fact, my Chinese sister-in-law won't buy anthing from China because most Chinese consider it inferior to American construction.

THOMASVILLE STINKS . We Paid over $3,500 for a Thomasville Sleigh Bed. We ordered it for our new house and for the first month I couldnt figure out what the smell in the bedroom was . We took out the area rugs , kept the windows open , got down on our hands and knees smelling the floor and baseboards , low and behold It was our Thomasville bed . Whatever finish they applied it is very toxic causing sleepless nights and headaches.
I think next time we will stick with IKEA for a lot less money .

    Thanks Thomasville.

I too bought a Wanderlust bedroom set.  It was supposed to be made in North Carolina.  The bed frame does not assemble properly.  It is coming apart.  The finish is a dust magnet and it scratches very easily.  I was going to purchase another piece to complete the set but after the problems I've had and seeing all the complaints on this site, I decided that I will have something custom made by the Amish.  Thomasville will never get one more dollar from me.  I have decided to buy Danish and French furniture instead.  I have several pieces from both countries and the finish and quality of construction is superb.  Too bad we no longer want to pay our US craftsmen to make quality furniture.  It sickens me to see Thomasville praying on customers in upscale towns.  Selling garbage for gold.

I just bought a lingerie chest from Brompton Hall. It was defected, scratched, and chipped all over the wood. Inside the drawer, it was stained black from the spray. It smelled very bad from the formaldehyde chemical and other chemicals. I called the Thomasville to return it but they did not sovle the problems. If you have that problems, return it to them or dispute it. I will dispute it later if they do not let me return it.

My mom and I got a headache, burning eyes and skin irratation and could not sleep in the bedroom that has a new lingerie chest. The smell from your bedroom set is from formaldehyde. This chemical gives you short term affect such as  watery eyes; burning sensations in the eyes, nose andthroat;coughing; wheezing; nausea; and skin irritation.

I purchased a chest from THomasville, the chest was damaged and chemical odor. It was terrible quality, they did not want to take it back,  I will never purchase anything from Thomasville. I will write a letter to the Coroporate THomasville about the Manager Jenifer in Portland Oregon store.

We purchased the desk in licorice -- DON'T DO IT!  It arrived with problems, had the odor that everyone is talking about, and had to be repaired (more odor!)  The finish is chipped all over and when a drink was placed ON A COASTER and the coaster sweated a bit on the bottom, the paint just soaked up the dampness and bubbled.  This was selected as a showpiece in our kitchen and now is being relegated to the office.  I will have to refinish the entire desk top (probably with a piece of formica) because we now have raw wood where the paint has completely peeled up.  There was no base stain with a top glaze (as the salesperson stated), NO PRIMER to hold the paint to the wood, just cheap, cheap process all around.  But, what made it worse was the incredibly "not our problem" customer service!

Wow, so glad I found out this info.  I've been looking for months for a "great" dresser.  Finally fell in love with Thomasville Cinnamon Hill collection. It did have a sticker on back that said made in China. Dressers are listed at $1500/each and planned to buy two.  Now I won't even consider it.  Headed to Amish furniture store south of us where I know what kind of product I'm getting, AND it will last a lifetime!  Sorry for all the problems you folks have had, but so glad I clicked on this link!  Thank you!

We have had a nightmare with Thomasville.  People need to understand the Thomasville that was our parents and grandparents is not the same as THOMASVILLE being made in China and Mexico today.
Go to the Thomasville Facebook page and post your complaints.  Also join me on Facebook at BOYCOTT THOMASVILLE to post your stories and complaints and to read about my Thomasville Nightmare.  Post your stories on pissedconsumer.com they are a very well visited site.

Thomasville is NOT what it used to be.  It's great furniture for people who need a "label" rather than quality to feel adequate.

I am also a customer that had a bad experience with Thomasville. They have horrible customer service and they don't honor their warranties. I also wrote to the CEO, Ed T. and never even received an acknowledgment of my letter. I will never buy Thomasville again.

I'm so happy that I found this site before going to Thomasville to make a purchase. Too many negative comments  keep me away from their doors.

I bought a floor sample sofa from Thomasville in Westbury, Long Island.  It was said to be on the floor for two years but looked like it was in great condition.  Holding up ok although the fabric is starting to pill.  The main problem is that the cushions smell so bad that I want to throw  the couch out in the garbage.  I am so disappointed  with it.  What a piece of junk.  Probably will end of getting rid of it or see if I can have new non- stinking cushions put in its place.  Don't buy Thomasville!!

Glad I read these reviews. My husband & i were going to shop at Thomasville for living room furniture but not anymore. Very discouraging when you are paying for quality but get cheap. False advertising.

Most of the furniture in the box stores is made in China or some other part of Asia. Name brands aren't what they were in our parents days. Even the famed Stickley Furniture company is having a line made in Vietnam. Do a Google search for Stickley Vietnam and see what comes up.  If you want real furniture now, you have two choices. An independent studio in New England (hope you have $$$) or buy Amish furniture. There's a few nice sites out there. Try www.OnlineAmishFurniture.com or www.AmishAlley.com. They both deliver nationwide. Good luck and be sure of what you're buying!

I wished I would have read the reviews before I purchased Thomasville furniture.  It is definitely cheap quality at an expensive price.  I, like others, thought Thomasville was made in America, but when it was delivered it has "China" stamped all over it.  The customer service was HORRIBLE and I will NEVER buy another piece from them ever again.
