My wife and I recently purchased a Felicity Sunlit Cherry Bedroom Suite from Thomasville Furniture.  Our Thomasville saleswoman had led us to believe that our Thomasville furniture would be made in North Carolina, but when it was delivered we discovered that it was all made in China.  Thomasville had built its reputation on delivering high quality American-made furniture from North Carolina -- but it appears that those days are now long gone.

The fit & finish of our Thomasville made-in-China furniture was poor.  There's really no other way to describe it.  Our bedroom suite has a total of 28 drawers. Many drawers weren't centered in their openings; some drawers were recessed in too far, and other drawers extended out too far.  After 2 visits from Thomasville's repair people, we still have: 8 drawers not centered in their openings; 13 that extend out too far; and 7 that are recessed in too far.  Thomasville's repair people told us that our remaining problems were non-repairable.  So I guess we'll just have to learn to live with this poor quality.

When we purchased our furniture, we specifically asked our Thomasville saleswoman what kind of wood was used in its construction.  She told us it was "entirely cherry".  When we later asked Thomasville's repair people that same question, they looked at our furniture and readily identified over 5 different species of wood -- just one was cherry, and at least 2 were obscure, unidentifiable Chinese hardwoods.  What we actually received was quite different from what we paid for.  When we brought this to the attention of the management of our Thomasville dealer, they completely ignored our complaint.

At first glance, Thomasville's construction quality appeared to us to be quite good (i.e., dovetail drawers, etc.).  But in  places where it wouldn't be quite as obvious to a customer, some of the furniture's joints are held together with staples.  That doesn't instill much confidence that the furniture will last for more than a few years.  We would have expected to find that kind of cheap construction in bedroom suites that cost under $1,500 -- but not in a Thomasville bedroom suite that cost us over $5,000!

My wife's dresser arrived with a large 10" circular hole in the back of the cabinet.  Rather than repairing this damage "before" the furniture was shipped, Thomasville's factory instead tried to conceal the damage by screwing a large Masonite panel over the hole.  While Thomasville repaired the damaged back panel "after" we discovered it, the point is that Thomasville deliberately shipped severely damaged furniture to a customer with the hope that the damage would never be discovered.  That's not what one would expect from a quality "world class" furniture brand.

Thomasville's furniture is shipped with a Chinese "plasticized" finish.  In our experience, it attracts dust like a magnet and unlike a quality lacquered or varnished finish it's relatively soft and easily damaged.  According to Thomasville's "printed furniture care instructions" my wife and I are not suppose to allow synthetics, rubber, or plastics to rest on the wood finish as they may damage the finish.  That, of course, prohibits placing most lamps, clocks, radios, TVs, pens, etc. on top of your Thomasville furniture unless you first modify the bottoms of those products.

Everything at Thomasville seems to now be focused on charging its customers as much as possible, while at the same time cutting its costs as much possible.  Even the screws that hold the knobs to the drawers have been cost-cut.  Rather than extending the screws into the knobs by at least 3/8", they just barely touch the knob. The cost savings across an entire bedroom set has to be less than a dollar -- and yet amazingly Thomasville still went for it.

After contacting our local Thomasville dealer several times about many of these problems and receiving no satisfaction, my wife and I wrote to Ed Teplitz, president of Thomasville Furniture Industries -- and also to Ralph Scozzafava, CEO of  Furniture Brands International.  Furniture Brands International owns Thomasville, along with Broyhill, Lane, Drexel Heritage, Henredon, and Maitland-Smith.  Neither of them ever responded to us.  That pretty much sums-up our Thomasville customer satisfaction experience.

At least they put Made in China stickers. There is this company in Illinois, they import all the prairie/arts and crafts style furniture from Malaysia. As soon as the container comes, they remove all the Made in Malaysia stickers. They hire for this illegal immigrants and they pay them under the table.Beside their website and furniture store they sell their pieces to museum and people who work in this museum do not even have any idea that the furniture hasn't been made in USA.So sad nobody can stop this.

The majority of complaints seem to be in the sales knowledge/customer service areas of particular stores. Are these Thomasville galleries or mom and pop operations that carry other lines as well?  Do they out source repair and contract delivery or have in-house personell that have been with them awhile? Makes a big difference. I worked for a gallery in the midwest for about ten years, took alot of pride in my work behind the scenes. Store warehouse tech/manager is generally responsible for the removal of dust, packing marks, minor nicks, drawer lubrication and allignment, door adjustments, steaming out creases and wrinkles in fabrics etc... Those are not manufacturer issues. Flaws in fabric/leather are factory issues. Replacement parts are sent to store and part is replaced either in store or at customers home as well as many other issues that come up in furniture i.e. spring units, recliner mechanisms, motors, cables, scratched mirrors, pumps, sagging mattress, stitching comes undone, fringe installation etc... Broken glass and mirrors are usually the result of delivery personell unless a chip or hairline crack occured beforehand, wasn't noticed, and strapping piece into truck made situation worse. Accidents do happen but our drivers were REQUIRED to let customer know before trying to go into the home with a piece that had been damaged on the truck. The salesperson or store manager was immediatly contacted and made aware of situation so they could also speak with customer about a resolution. Meet the folks you'll be dealing with, especially those behind the scenes. Check Better Business Bureau and the like for complaints. Purchase from stores that were refered to you by the folks you trust. Buyer beware, do your homework.

hi I was wondering I bought a Rivage sleigh bed from Thomasville. We are very happy with it it is beautiful. I have  a problem with the headboard it gets a line across the board like glue they have fixed it once in the past now they are sending the technician over to fix it once more. He buffs it and the puts laquer over that it fixes the problem but why does that keep happening? no we are not resting our heads on the board.

My wife and I nearly spent $7,000 on Thomasville Cinnamon Hill this last weekend.  We started to question the quality after inspecting the display pieces closely.  Flimsy drawer bottoms and stripped threads on knobs certainly got our attention.  The comments here and on other sites seem to confirm our suspicions.  I am not concerned if something is made in China, but I am concerned if the product is of poor quality.  The quality here did not seem to warrant the cost.  Comments on Thomasville's customer service are very discouraging.

Thanks everyone for posting.  I'm changing my mind about ordering furniture from T'ville. Sounds like they're not the quality furniture company of the past.

We purchased the Cinnamon Hill Dining room table, china hutch and 8 chairs.  We also purchased a coffee and end table and are happy with the quality and service.  The hutch and end table went back because they were damaged, but were immediately replaced to our satisfaction.  No problems here!

I just made a large purchase from Thomasville store and was told I was getting 45% off. What I didn't know is that the store had doubled their prices on each item within the last year so I didn't get anything on sale I actually paid above retail. Beware. Don't buy from thomasville.

Thanks for all the posts.  We too were about to purchase the Wanderlust dining collection . . . as it does look great on the show floor.  After reading these posts, sadly enough, we probably won't buy from Thomasville.

To have this capability to make others aware of the lack of customer service, poor construction and selection of materials is key to helping others assess their personal situation prior to purchase. Having been a long time consumer of Thomasville products, and a satisified one, I will no longer purchase any of their products. My kitchen cabinetry is reasonable to look at but the drawers keep falling off the tracks and though my husband is a mechanical and electrical engineer he cannot fix them. The design is absymal. Of course, no one accepts responsibility at Thomasville or in the sales arena. But a bigger issue is our formal dining room chairs are all splitting at the top making the chairs unsafe. We paid a very large sum of money for them as they were intricate in the carving and part of the top of the line dining suite. We are in the process of looking around for a cabinet maker to recreate the pattern and find a solution. Thomasville did nothing. So buyer beware! This testimonial comes from someone who traditionally buys Theodore Alexander and Lloyd Buxton furnishings so I know quality and will pay for it going forward. Thomasville belongs in WalMart.

$3000 for office furniture. Hutch doesn't match base in color, drawers had the pull hole drilled in wrong spot and filled and sanded, inside of keyboard drawers not finished. The manager even came out and looked at it, agreed it needed replaced, and (wait for it) - NOTHING after four months. Wish I could take it and throw through their store window. Chinese POS. I thought I was buying at least a North American product. Crap customer service and crap product. Never again.

I was shopping at Thomasville. The saleswoman told me the sofas I wanted "were already made, and ready to ship from the warehouse in North Carolina." The impression I got was that they were made in North Carolina, although, when I think of that sentence, it is probably 'legally' accurate although highly misleading. Later, I learned that all their wooden parts and all their wooden furniture are made in China, and then the furniture is upholstered in North Carolina. I have nothing against people of China or North Carolina, except that many toxic materials are used in China, and many human rights are violated in China, and the profit margins are many times the actual cost of things made in China,  and that the uncured resins used in many items from China can stink up the house and cause illness. I don't think Thomasville staff is straightforward about the practices of the company. I decided not to buy from them after getting the salespitch and conflicting information and after seeing the bad reviews here.

My wife and I bought the Wanderlust bedroom set, and many complementary living room items from the same collection.  We dealt with and bought from a gentleman named William in the Durham, NC showroom store.  We are so satisfied that we continue correspondence and will most certainly do business with William and Thomasville in the future.

We had to reschedule our delivery based on construction in our home, and the company was entirely accommodating to our needs.  I am sorry to hear that so many people on this board had a negative experience, and so grateful that we had such a positive and pleasant experience.  Some brackets that were necessary to attach the mirror to the dresser were not included in the original delivery.  As soon as I notified William, he Fed-Exed them to me, and I had them in my possession in less than a week.

While I can't control where the furniture is made, I can safely say that much of our experience was based on great customer service.  So if your experience was bad because of the salesperson that you dealt with, take my advice and give William a call in Durham, NC.  Your home will thank you.

Where do I begin with Thomasville...  We purchased a living room couch, coffee table, end tables and single loveseat (Wanderlust).  In the bedroom we also bought the king size canopy bed, night tables, mattress set, dresser drawer, cedar trunk, entertainment center, and another "man's" dresser for my husband (see website).  We paid over 11.000,00 for furniture made in China.  The couch cushion already was worn out after 3 months and had to replace one cushion and have to replace the other cushion soon.  The quality is horrible and poorly made for the price we paid.  What happened to putting a little extra comfort with springs and down cushions!!  Oh I forgot, it went into paying the children in China the 1.00 hour wage and the thousands that go to the suits sitting on the hill at Thomasville.  I'm at the point of telling them to come pick up their furniture because I'm still paying on it!!!  The delivery men also put holes in our walls when they were setting it upstairs.  They didn't bring any tools to put the furniture together and my husband lent them his tools. The 1200.00 mattress is already losing it's firmness and I'm slowly rolling towards the middle of the bed.  I definitely would not buy or recommend anyone to buy anything from Thomasville.  They are a horrible company and the salepeople don't tell you anything about the financing and what happens after the promotion ends.  They just want that commission!!  If I could I would file a suit against this company.  They did not disclose any of the finance issues.  DO NOT BUY!!! EVER!!!!
