Rogers duplicitous customer service

About three months ago, I called Rogers customer service to cancel my cellular services. I was transfered to the customer relations department where I was offered as incentive to stay with Rogers three months unlimited calling. They didn't mention anything else besides that. Sounded good so I went for it. Little did I know that Rogers had cunningly signed me up on a three year contract!!!!!

You can't imagine how enraged I was when I found out. The conniving, scheming and duplicitousness of it all just convinced me I had to get out....I was done with Rogers and no amount of incentives was going to change my mind. I was in for a mega-ton shock when I called to cancel my services. Apparently I would have to pay 400 dollars to cancel...and you know why....because I was on that three year contract.

Let me clarify a few things. About a year and a half ago, I bought my nokia 6682 smartphone full price on no contract. I payed my bills faithfully every single month. I was a free woman, with no contracts. So why in the world would I want to shackle myself to Rogers on a three year contract!!!! Why didn't customer relations mention that the three months unlimited calling entailled a three year contract? Do you see the utter deceptiveness of this all?

About three days ago I called Rogers to sort this all out and thankfully my calling plan was reverted back to what it used to be. But to be honest with you, I'm so angry and tired, that as soon as my account is officially back to a month to month plan, I'm going to get the hell out of Rogers.

Rogers needs to change their policies. Become transparent will all their customers.

My complaint is long winded..sorry in advance. Anyways a few years ago I bought 1 phone on a 3 year contract. Bought a 2nd for my son in the next year, and was explained by the sales agent that it would extent my contract for 1 year. These phones and plan were purchased under my NOW ex husbands plan as myself also being on the plan. skip ahead 5 years, phone are no longer working and no longer needed. Called Rogers to cancel phones. They tell me I can't that my ex husband has to cancel them. I explain to them that we aren't on speaking terms and that isn't going to happen. Their responce was sorry nothing we can do. So now i have to pay them forever just because I can't cancel?? I think not!! I fufilled my obligation. I explained to them that I was done paying and not to bill me anymore (the bills and payments came to me and from me). They have since put my ex husband into collection plus added another 500 worth of charges. I have tried settling this with them for almost a year now. Roger's will sure sign you up on contracts no questions asked but they sure won't let you cancel.. I don't know where else to turn now. It bothers me so much to have to give them money that really doesn't belong to them..I'm thinking of involving a lawyer, knowing full well it will cost me more in legal fees then what is left owing, just to prove a point. What do you all think?

They're right, you can't cancel someone else's phone.  It has his name on it, why do you care if they send him to collections? Eventually it will cancel due to non payment and he'll have to call in himself.

Every month, my bill gets higher and higher because they add random costs to it. I was expecting to only pay 50-60 this month BUT it turns out they played with my bill once again trying to get every penny out of their customers, that they made the bill $90!!! for what? so i called them and they try to sound all right and smart about it.

My problem is similar to yours.  I have found they do not honor their so called phone contracts and charge whatever they feel at the time.  My bills are way over the amount I agree to and cannot afford to pay them, although I do pay them every month.   I too am looking into legal action.

Everyone should cancel any type of service they have with Rogers. This company offers inferior service at inflated prices. Their business practices are borderline illegal. Only if enough people walk away from this company will their unethical behaviour change.

even getting names and numbers doesn't help. i'm in the middle of a rogers nightmare and i have all kinds of notes and messages with names and employee numbers on them. these people are trained to be cold, uncaring machines. i got my son a phone a little over 3 months ago, that was supposed to have been no-charge for the first 3 months ( aside from the plan fee ) i am now looking at a bill of $1919.00 for everything from text messaging to data. this was all supposed to have been no charge according to the rep i spoke to originally. after reading all the other complaints about roger i can't believe that that get away with these practices day after day and nothing is done. is there no regulation of these companies, where is the better business bureau, surely there must be someone protecting the consumer...

This Rogers Stupid customer service is nothing but playing games with consumer like us.  Waited 1 hr and 21 mins. but did not get anybody to speak with.  Previously, i requested to change my address to rogers. Turned out, they changed my account. I am rogers for 6 years, they kicked me out from 6 years old account and turned to a new one.  When ever I call them for upgrade, they advise me that i am with them for only 1 year. I don't know what kind of people they hire  and what kind of experiences they look for it.  To my understanding, I find "you have to be stupid, Illiterate and dump to get a job".

As a consumer we should take a action to this Rogers or switched all to different company or perhaps to prove it that we are not locked out our freedom of consumer rights them.

I hope the big man Mr. Ted Rogers will find out the truth and resolve this problem.

    Bent over by Roger!
I feel screwed hard! (not that I really know how that feels but!) My wife and I had a plan that should have ended Aug '08. Last year we confirmed this.  I just called to cancel our 2 phones which are on the family plan. I changed our plan in Jan '07 to the family plan and guess what! Yup, 3 year contract was implemented, unknown to us.  Now I'm stuck with these 2 (actually one was stolen) old ass phones and in a contract until Jan 2010.

I should have cancelled the stolen one then but figured I'd get a used one but never did. I'm going to call rogers and pay the $200 cancellation for the stolen but ask them to reverse any charges between when I reported it to them and now.  Who know's? Maybe I'll come out ahead.

As for the other one, my wife can keep using it for now.  The plan's only $20/month. Although they'll probably jack that up too once I cancel the other one.

Seems like a lose lose situation with Rogers.

I can relate to your comment on Rogers not wanting to cancel and that you would like to get a lawyer involved.  Get this....the sales rep went on and on about the problems that his sister had with Rogers and himself also.  His suggestion to me was that if Rogers doesn't follow through with their promises I could "sue" them.  Can you imagine if you gave this information out to your employers customers about your boss???? I doubt you would still be employed with that company.  This is his feeling about his employer.  Can't believe it!!1

Get this! If you want to get a NEW phone (I had hoped to get an iphone.) ROGERS automatically renews your contract for another 3 YEARS!!! BE careful about this fellow ripped off customers.  I'm moving  to the United States in a year... my current contract expires June 2009... and of course like all of you, I am going away from this evil corporation... what crooks.

My contract ended with Rogers in February, I called in December and January to confirm that I did not want to continue their services and requested a final bill and confirmation that the service would be disconnected.  As of February the account was 126$.  I did not receive the final bill with verification.  In March I requested once again WRITTEN verification. I explained I would be happy to pay the amount once a final bill was sent.  Today and 460$ later I'm still arguing with them about the additional fees.  They continued to charge me a monthly service fees (March, April, May, June, July and August), and they charged me 200$ to disconnect the damn phone!  There are no customer service comments regarding conversations we have had and every time I have phone I get to wait on hold for at least an hour.  I asked to speak to a department manager and they would not transfer me.  In the end I get to suck up the extra cost because otherwise they'll send it too collections.

    Hey,

I am going through the exact same thing...contract was up in June 2008 and they will not let me cancel.  They say my ex has to call even though my name is also on the account and he told them I have full access to the account...apparantly to Rogers that just means I can order extras and change phone numbers (anything that is more money in there pocket) but I cannot cancel.  I am going to try again today and threaten them that I will be contacting a lawyer and ask to speak to a manager and if that does not work I will be taking them to court.  Last time I tried cancelling they also said I have to give them 30 days notice...funny how they can mail you a phone and it is there the next day but when you want to cancel something it takes them a month (or more cause by the sound of it they just dont do it).  I know the 30 days thing will never stand up in court because they never pointed that part of the contract out to me and never mentioned it.  (I am currently going through to become a law clerk and just learned all about contract law which I found very interesting because of Rogers).  And not to mention also once I called to change my phone number because I moved and they renewed me on a 3 year term...I really gave it to the first girl I called and she said I still had 3 years left on my contract when it was due to be up...I asked her why and she said on whatever day it was I called to change the phone number and that renewed my contract...I told her I did not agree to that and there was never a mention of that and she took the extra 3 years off and put back my original contract end date.
