They are a common phony "debt collector" extortion racket.

They are often reported to have thick Indian accents, and may be calling via VoIP from India, which allows them to easily change their phone numbers.  They are also reported to have access to old payday loan data and possibly credit reports, which helps them fake the appearance they are collecting on some "payday loan".  Access to skip trace or credit information allows them to locate employers or relatives to harass or use to threaten embarassment.

They are just criminals who can't carry out any of their threats.  File complaints with your local police and the FBI.

I just spoke to a person who said they are from coffman, bernstein and associates, 678-894-0621 they said that they have information from sjm marketing about a payday loan that i owe from 10/2007. I have never heard of this company. He asked me have i ever lived in Florida. He said that he was going to issue a warrant for my arrest. I contacted the better business bureau in there area & was connected to a automated system & they said that the phone number that i entered into there system has a rating of an F & they are not an accredited business. While i was on the phone with the better business bureau in alpharetta georgia, i get a voice mail message on my phone from a man saying that his name is a mr. small & then he said his name was investigator small so, he could not get his name straight. He said that i have committed a multiple check fraud & it is locked into the last four digits of my ss #. This a very serious offense according to the state that i live in laws. You will also be named as the respondent & it is imperative that i contact him. I have never heard of this place & they would not be calling themselves investigators if they were a legit company. Wow, don't understand why people continue to try & scam you. I believe this is a scam & i don't appreciate the harassment. Please beware of scammers.

There are attorneys out there that will sue these companies on your behalf - cost you nothing and you might get some money in your pocket.  I have successfully had two such companies sued and won them both.  The first one I got $300.00 and the second one I got a judgment for 1500.00, but the Attorney General of New York shut them down before they paid out.  I too am now working the get SJM Marketing sued.  I have a voice recorder that goes on my cellphone and a recorder that is attached to the home phone.  Did not take long to prove the have violated the law. They must provide proof of the debt before they can "have you arrested for banking fraud".  I love playing with these people and I lobby at the State Legislature against them.

So I have a stark law calling saying the represent smj marketing, I fell for it and gave them info and set up payments.   then I canceled that card I gave to them. when he called today I asked why they had three addresses and if he was an accredited law firm why did their address go to a UPS store, why where they not accreditated with BBB, and why did the FBI have a case against them.   That I needed proof of a deposit, proof of a returned payment, and according to my attorney ( I don't have one) they have to provide me with a copy of this before they can sue me.   How do I know for sure this is scam.

I  would like to kniw how to go about suing this company as well.  I was first informed that i had one loan of which I defaulted only to later be told that I now  have two totaling  $1160.00.  They further told me that if I  didn't pay I would be taken to court.  I informed that I was going to check into this further  and I was transferred to another person.  When I explained  my concerns she then hung up.  This is ridiculous and needs to be stopped.

Not much point in doing anything.. replies to jessi
They're probably Indian scammers, scamming from safely overseas, so no one is going to sue or prosecute them.  On the other hand, there isn't any real "debt", and they can't do anything they threaten, so you can safely ignore them.

If you are inclined, play dumb and waste their time until they get mad.  Maybe they'll have a stroke or get heart disease.

This exact thing happened to me yesterday. They called me saying I took out a payday loan in 2011. I have never taken out a payday loan. They said the current balance is 890 and if I didn't pay I would be responsible for well over 2000 dollars in attorney costs. Has anybody resolved this issue?

I just got a call also, this is very disturbing knowing that they have your ss# The number that called me was 951-446-1594.  They told me I had two outstanding  judgments from  SJM marketing and GTI.  I'm going to report both.
