DEBT COLLECTION?????

I was shocked to see this website...I just got a bill from a debt collector that claims I owe Verizon 727.81 from a landline telephone I allegedly had back in 1995. When I was in high school. And lived with my parents. At a different address than where this random phone line was connected.
What is going on?

The Verizon rep at that number looked at my account and noticed that although I canceled service via porting my number in March, only my voice account was canceled and not the data account. He corrected the mistake, credited the account the $120, "pulled it back" from the collections agency, marked it "Disputed" so it wouldn't go back, and generated a PAID IN FULL letter.
Thanks!
One year later I received a call from a person who wouldnt identify themselves but wanted my social security number. I hung up and called the 800 number back. Guess who....Allied Interstate. They told me I had an outstanding bill with Verizon for $78.15. This couldnt be right Verizon always had a my PO box for my billing and I still have the same phone number now with Brighthouse Networks. I never received anything from Verizon. Come to find out they started sending bills to my OLD (service) address where I had moved from.
After hours of going back and forth with Allied and Verizon for several months. I finally talked to Mark at Verizon billing (the phone number on your statement). He took the time, actual customer service to completely go over my account with me and come to find out they made a mistake and OWE ME $3.15!!! He then transferred me to Verizon financial affairs who is going to send me a "they made an error letter" and they transferred me to Verizon credit department who is going to cancel the collection.
If you in fact do not owe Verizon any money, forget Allied go direct to Verizon billing for your answers. Good luck!

In January 2009, I paid a bill to Verizon. My bank statements show that the funds were removed. Verizon stated that I still owed the balance. I faxed my bank statement and was told it would take 30 days for my account to be cleared. I would receive written verification by mail. I never received anything.
Several months later, I got a letter from a collections agency. When I contacted Verizon again, I was told they had no record of my payment or bank statement. I faxed again and repeated the whole process. 30 days I was told.
It has now been 2 ½ years. I am trying to get a loan to purchase a home. Verizon’s error has negatively affected my credit score and they refuse to resolve the issue. Each time I am told the same. It seems they just want to get me off the phone.
The last time I touched faxed the bank statement (10/18/10), I called to check the status. They told me a bank statement was insufficient proof of payment. They needed an “electronic funds transmittal” from my bank. I have email verification that they received this document. Now when I call to check the status, I am told that they see no proof of payment. My account is locked from viewing and to call back in 30 days.
While researching online to find tips to resolve this issue, I have stumbled upon some astounding information. It seems that these billing errors/faulty credit reporting and poor customer service are quite common. Verizon’s mistakes have damaged the credit rating for an unbelievable amount of people.
How are they getting away with this with no legal ramifications? Is the only way to resolve this to pay the bill twice? Why is a bank statement insufficient proof of payment? What options do consumers have when disputing large corporations such as Verizon?
Has anyone done this before? If so, do you have any verizon mailing address?
thank you!
