We attended their presentation and after some calculation decided to pay for the membership which was $4990. We wanted to update our kitchen and bathroom cabinets, as well as bedroom furniture. We put down about $1000, and the rest was financed through their lender Beta Finance.

A month later we started planning our purchases and realized we were about to pay more by buying through them than we would otherwise. What the don't tell you on their presentation is that while you save about 10% on furniture they add 8 % handling charge in addition to 7% tax, and that doesn't include shipping.

I am now trying to get our membership money back. Do not become a member! Buy from other stores.

I think it depends on the store, you know they are franchised...my hubby and I have been DB members for 4 years.
We gutted our upstairs, did complete kitchen, bathroom, living room reno.
Yes, sometimes their service is slow, but I would have still rather paid $13,000.00 for my custom kitchen then the $56,000.00 or $63,000.00 I was quoted any day.

I don't know if it's a rip off....but we're very upset over Direct Buy.  We went to their show room, before Christmas, and we couldn't find it.....they either closed up shop or moved, but nobody could answer our questions on where they moved to.
I have written them online, and left messages, but never received an answer.....Still in the dark....
We will be getting to the bottom of all of this; and right now, I'm very sorry we are members.   They are very quick to send us our membership amount when due, though!!!

Just attended an "open house" event where I was promised a 7" Android tablet just for attending. I already knew about what Direct Scam was supposed to be about, but, my wife and me had nothing better to do that day, so what the heck. Sat thru the sales pitch, he took us around the showroom and showed us some sample "deals". There was a table sat up with sales flyers from local retail stores with products comparing the prices to Direct Scam's. The sales guy showed us a flyer from "Home Depot" and then the Direct Scam's price, well Direct Scam's "price" was lower, but the flyer was from HHGregg, not home depot. He didn't even know what store he comparing to, and this flyer was even laminated together with their price on the back side. We did not sign up, said we didn't have the funds. There was no pressure, he just said ok, but you not be solicited again to come in, fine with me. THEN, we get up to the desk to get our free tablet. He then proceeded to go thru a long speech saying that ups had not ran today but should have, and so they didn't have the tablets. He had been with us for 90mins, and was before noon, when did he have the time to get all that info as to the delay and when they MAY be in? THEN, he hands us a letter stating the delay. The letter was pulled from a stack under the front desk. Were they already printed out? WOW, that was fast, Direct Scam must have had ESP that day. Of course they are saying they should be in "this Friday or next". And then there was the restaurant gift card, what a joke. NO restaurants in our area, hmmmmm. What a waste of time......just don't go!

Please don't be mean and call me names, but honestly my experience was okay. I don't mean to diminish your complaints because I don't disbelieve you. When we were building our home we got all of our granite, appliances, and shutters through DB. The quality was better than the builder was offering(not a mass builder so we had the flexibility to do this) and the cost was excellent.  Since that time I have noticed that many items such as electronics are higher than the same in the mass market. I also searched for a new bedroom set and even with shipping the price was lower than retail (I went to the retail show room), but I'm glad I saw ut in the show room because the quality was poor. Had I ordered from DB and discovered the poor quality upon arrival would I have been stuck with my purchase? So, maybe for every day DB is no good,  but when building not so bad. By the way, the granite and shutters were local businesses that DB contracted with. We dealt directly with the local business except the payment. We paid DB.

My husband and I attended a DIrectBuy invitation 90 minute seminar in jacksonville, fl promising a 2 night 3 day hotel accommodation in Orlando with $150 good towards disney park ticket. We wasted 3 hrs. Of our Saturday and got the stupid package. It requires you to send $50 reservation deposit + $16 per night processing fee on top of taxes and surcharges for hotels like Days Inn, Ramada inn, Travelodge to select from!!!! There are so many restrictions in your selection of dates that would make it almost impossible to actually be able to use it. I threw the whole thing in trash but decide to write here, hoping someone else doesn't get lured into this scam.

We were given an option of Platinum $5200 or gold $4490 (I just learned from reading online the membership prices are even negotiable and variable!!!) which I gladly declined.

They send these so called invitation to get people into their door and hope that at least there are some poor souls to be sucked by it..... my husband made me promise NEVER to even read this type of mail before shredding it and I agreed.

I agree with you.  You Do Not go to DB unless you are serious about buying...Free Tablet!! LOL  What kinda of moron does this?  It's not about the Tablet or free airline tickets...it's about buying materials or objects you want for less.  If you have everything you need, don't go!  If you can't afford the membership fee, don't go.  My family has been a member for 1 yr and have had none of the problems I've read about here.  Yes, we did get a "free" tablet..and we did not have to "sign up" or pay anyone to use it.  In fact, I gave it to my 5 yr old grandson to play on.  If you think you're getting an $800.00 tablet you are mistaken.  They are not in business to give you things.  But, if you have "major" re-modeling to do and have to make major purchases for your home (ie, refrigerator, washing machines and so on) you'll love it.  And, the more you buy the more that membership fee feels like a steal.  Or, you can shop at Wally World  and still pay more.

The guy who spoke with us told us that at this one they hired new people because the previous sales people were just plain lying and promises things that they could not deliver just to get a sale. So I do believe there are groups like that. A lot of people at this store called the corporate office and complained.  Corporate got rid of them. I believe this will work for us but I will see and I will be back on here to let you know how it goes. Yes it's a lot of money to join and believe me I will be working my butt off to make it work for me. If there are any problems, somebody, everybody will be hearing from me.

Its not about getting the free gifts and plus they shouldn't offer it to you if they are not going to hold up on thier end of the bargin. They are paying for your time and the a potential buyer. You will always pay them its like leasing a car for life and having to fix it if it continues to break down.

Never heard of any judgments against DB corp... Read through the complaints and find Trudy's guidelines for a refund... On the back of the contracts you should have 3 days to try for a refund...that's usually the law and they try to squirm out of that one too.
After that it's damn near impossible..
I should have tried small claims court.. It's been almost 4 years since we joined for $5,490.00 in Tampa Florida..
We even tried a meeting with the owner to ask that we could unjoin and have our monies returned..
Franchise owner first tried talking us into letting him help us with purchases.. that didn't work.. I told him DB was not for us and we needed a refund.. then he went psychotic and said he didn't have the membership fee anymore, it had gone straight to corp. headqtrs.. and asked us how we thought he was gonna feed his son among other nonsense !
I truly believe DirectBuys all over US & Canada make a ton of money from individuals talked into the huge membership fees.. We're done with them and learned a hard lesson..  Please spread the WORD!!

                    some options regarding the contract:
(but pick only one since legally it's about all you can pick)

                    1. small claims court (can rep self, go in for no or low cost)
                    2. class action law suits (though the return can be low amongst all the plaintiffs)
                    3. BBB (as Direct Buy recommends in contract)
4 (some American Arbitration Assoc or the like, recommended by DB also)
5 non payment of monthly fees, resulting in cancellation of contract, but also probably hurting credit score (default consumer)
6 hiring an attorney ("bad faith" provision of Uniform Criminal Code, or using mental illness: to negate contract)

Broken or screwed up game surface.  Returned with weeks of reordering. And then weeks for refund.  3x's your out! The fireplace would have saved us maybe $50.00. However my handyman wouldn't be available 6 weeks later when the thing arrives. The stone was available at local vendor in 2 days.  My mason said that he could do the work. But waiting for direct buy materials would be silly. They wouldn't drop at back of yard on at the street. I'd wait weeks and he maybe onto another job. My saying would only been about $10 a carton. I needed 12 cartons. So big deal a savings of $120.00 for a $4000.00 membership. Do NOT join. Waste of time money quality.

Why doesn't everyone get together and hire a lawyer to sue Direct Buy so that we can all get are money back? That seems to be the only way to do this since no one can get answers from the corporate office.

                  What do you think?

My husband and I also purchased a month ago. The tour took so long we joined just to get out of there!  After trying now for a month to find items we are interested in we cannot get any of them through them. Also we are not getting the emails we were told we would get weekly regarding so called Bargains.  We feel very scammed and I am embarassed to say, we are old enough to have known better.  But we felt with 5 grown kids this would help us help them with great gifts for their homes.  I agree lets to a class action law suit.  I read every piece of paper given to me front and back looking for a 3 day out disclosure and I found nothing, did anyone else find something?

I refuse to pay them anymore money after my down payment. It took until the time I got my log on and pin which I had to call the store to get, to find out it is all a rip off. I am going to go to Smalls Claims Court in hope of getting this so called contract cancelled based on very false claims regarding the level of savings on just about everything and to get my deposit of $553 back. If there is a class action suit I definitely want in. The other option is to go to your Attorney General's office. I am going to try that as well.

They are unscrupulous right from the beginning.  Their promotion is not what they promised.  What chance is it that their club will provide any benefit. There should be a lawsuit right in the beginning to prevent people from actually losing large sums of money and not just an afternoon.

Anyone who thinks Direct Buy is a bargain is full of [***].  Add in the shipping, their 8 percent "Handling fee," the hard sell, the now or never ridiculously insane attitude, and it's more than obvious they are out for their own good.  DO NOT ever join this company.  My knowledge comes from my hobby of reading complaints against certain businesses, and this Direct Buy, a/k/a Direct Ripoff, is one of the, if not THE most scams out there.  And anyone with half a brain should realize that.  Sorry to all you folks that fell for this, but getting out of the contract is EXTREMELY difficult.  These people who do this belong in jail for fraud for a LONG time.  Don't do this, people.  And if you don't believe this, google "Direct Buy complaints" and you'll see for yourself.  Rot in hell, you DB salesmen and women!!

If you have been to Home Depot or Lowes you know even the cheap cabinets are more expensive than $13K for a moderately sized kitchen.  Watch the DIY shows on HGTV and you will find out there are two rooms your house is appraised (KITCHEN and Master BED/BATH).  So having a nice kitchen with HARD WOODs and nice countertops - NOT INCLUDING the  stainless steel appliances, you would know that $13K is a very good price.  My kitchen is the heart of my home - so I want to have it work for me and a few of my family members on holidays.  If you husband has the best stuff in his garage (stuff he only uses a couple times a year) then you should have a nice kitchen.  I would rather have a nice kitchen than a luxury car (that gets 18 mpg).  I will use the kitchen longer than the car (5-6 years) and it will pay me back in more ways than one.  Get your priorities straight.  And STOP BEING A DEBBI DOWNER.

I spoke several x's to sales rep on phone & she made me feel really comfortable about not feeling obligated to buy anything in order to get our gift. Well we got there early & the man who started talking to us told us b4 we even took the tour that we were basically wasting his time because if we did not join them today we would NEVER be allowed to come into another db ever. So we told him we never made on the spot decision. They couldn't get us out of there fast enough. We spent 3hrs driving time in the rain to feel judged & humiliated. We didn't even get our free gift w\ no obligation. What a joke. And what a waste of time. Thank God we didn't. Sit thru another 3hrs sales pitch. I will be telling EVERYONE i know (& maybe I dnt have a ton of money to just throw away, but I do have friends & family who may) to NEVER deal w/ these. Dishonest unpleasant horrible company!

I just got the card in the mail last night, I called, I have no problem with listening for 90 minutes and then saying nope give me my free stuff. They guy told me I have to bring my husband with me to the "seminar" I told him I was a widow… dead silence on the phone, then he came back and said “ you don’t qualify”. I asked “why not, just because he died does not mean I can’t make a financial decision on my own”. He said “sorry, do you have a boyfriend”? Needless to say my response was not nice. I looked on the card and it says if married/engaged you must bring the spouse/fiancé. It says nothing about not qualifying if you are single or widowed. I think I am going to call and demand to be allowed to go and get my free stuff. A friend at work said I should find the dirtiest, smelliest homeless man I can find and bring him to the party…. But I wouldn’t even want to subject him to how nasty this operation is.

I just did the tour of the Direct Buy in Edison NJ.  The place was clean, and neat.  There were Members in the store working with staff.  Everyone seemed happy.  All the samples they had on display seemed to be of very good quality.

I didn't want to subject the wife to the presentation so at the time I called back I just told them I was single.  They were fine with that.  You may have gotten a bad representative.  I would call back and this time just say you are single, have a drivers licence, major credit card, and earn the required income.

As for complaints about the tour and sales pitch, I thought it was entertaining enough.  I have sat through 3 hour time share tours for show tickets so this was a walk in the park.  They explained the "savings" then sent me to the Manager.  He offered me several deals, payment options, and so on.  I declined them all and explained that while it was a great value I didnt have that upfront money now.  He thanked me for coming handed me my fake ipad and a card for $100 in restaurant coupons.  He even then proceed to take the time to explain to me in detail how to use the card so I could get the best value out of it.

In short I think the concept is valid and if i was renovating a home, or flipping homes, it might have some value - but otherwise I will save that membership due.

When asked how they compare to Home Depot only thing Rep could say is that D.B. had more variety. Speaker was short and rude when asked questions in regards to actual savings and prices. Then I was rushed out whn I refused to join. Although I was reluctantly given the free gift I leave you with this DIRECT BUY IS A RIP OFF AND SCAM THEY DO A POOR JOB OF GIVING SUPPORTING DATA. ON WHT AND HOW MUCH YOU CAN SAVE ON ITEMS IN REGARDS TO YOUR NEEDS. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THESE FOOLS $5,000. THEIR SERVICES IN MY OPINION FIT MORE FOR CONTRACTORS NOT THE AVERAGE HOME OWNER WHO MAY JUST WANT TO UPGRADE OR RENOVATE. REALLY HAVE TO BE Knowledgeable IN MEASUREMENTS, MATERIALS, ECT TO REALLY UNDERSTAND CATALOGS. IF YOUR A CONTRACTOR OR LANDLORD THIS MAY BE FOR YOU BUT FOR JUST THE HARD WORKING HOME OWNER PLS BEWARE AND STAY AWAY FROM DIRECT BUY.

Your opinion is just that, yours.   It's a shame that people  like you insist on speaking as an authority after a couple hours of exposure.  Db is great for all consumers if you know you spend money.  We only make 53k and yet saved money on everything from eyeglasses to bikes.  If you and these other sanctimonious blowhards took the time to understand db is more than building you might be happy members.  We saved our 5000 back in 2 yrs on small stuff.  Only now are we ready to do larger projects.  Its obvious you and others like you were close minded when you went.  We can find a bruise on anything if we look hard enough and if not we just bruise it ourselves.   The real problem with this site is people like you fashion yourselves as consumer police.  Unfortunately americans are not independant thinkers.  They like to follow.  As a result unpoliced forums give people like you a license to hurt others with opinions stated as facts.  There will always be bad apples.  However no need to condemn the whole bunch!

I will be using my membership even more in the near future for some upcoming projects. I think as Americans in the richest country in the world, we should be more supportive of businesses that support and promote American businesses. Walmart has made us think it is all about cheapest price as we fund jobs in China. I see the big picture, I've made an investment for myself and my country and it's my home that benefits.

Not discrimination. Former Employee. The sales reason for this is so that 1) you can play off each other, we mention jewelry, the husband gets guilt tripped by the wife, we mention a basketball goal, the wife gets guilt tripped by the husband. That is just sales. 2) If you are paying upwards of $900 and married, it is best to have the support of both spouses. DB doesn't want angry spouses calling because their significant other signed up for a 4k membership. As far as I know, some locations allow exceptions if the spouse is out of town for extended periods of time.

I am no longer a member, but was for 10 years.  It is a [***] sales process/ I even worked there for a month. What a sweat shop. However I did save a bunch of cash on some items. I did recoup my money invested. However it is work to buy items.
You have to go thru the whole sale catalogues which i not a bunch of fun. But the is a huge selection. However you can never touch & try the products before you buy. But there is some nice stuff, Often you pay a similar amount but can get a better made product, or just something that is not offered in your local stores.

Blinds, furniture ac & furnaces is where I saved a bunch of dough. However I am no longer in that mode since we built the new house & sold most of our investment properties.

I do not think the market is very broad & most people will not benefit from it. But some can. Sorry to hear about a store closing. That sucks & is something that should be dealt with by the corporate office. Which I doubt they wlil do anything about.
KInd of a weird company.  Good luck.

I went to the open house last Thursday (11/21/13). We were not planning and major home improvements in the next 10 years but decided to go and see what it was all about. Didn't hurt that they promised a $100 gift card to go eat out and an Android 7" Tablet. I went knowing in advance that we would probably not get the gifts. I follow the old rule of thumb "if it sounds too good to be true, it is." Needless to say the $100 gift card isn't to eat free at all, you get a discounted price if you spend so much at the restaurants that promote Direct Buy and I looked at them and they are not your good restaurants anyway. Naturally, they were out of tablets and said that they would mail it to me when the shipment came in the next day. Yeah right. Here it is, Wednesday 11/27 and no tablet. Not like they have to mail it across the country. Anyway, we did not bite into the membership pitch. Think about how much money you would have to spend just to get your money back to cover the cost of the membership? Didn't add up to me (and I have a corporate finance degree and an MBA) and I do well with budgeting and thinking about things from a different perspective. I am not saying anything bad but do your research and don't go to the open house expecting the "nice" gifts they promise. You won't get them.

I worked for DirectBuy all over the country ranging from Austin TX, Orlando FL,  Merrillville IN, Tinley Park IL and I must say the quality depends on the franchise.  Ed Sell the owner of Tinley Park lived to scam people even his employees.  The concept that DirectBuy originated on was good intentions. Now if you don't have plans to fix your home, flip houses, or travel don't join.  The free gifts to come visit are not always a scam but thats on the franchise.. again Ed sell never gave away [***].   Daniel King of Orlando was nothing but helpful and always had the free gifts.  The upside for DirectBuy is that if you do join and become a member they have great customer service. Id suggest telling people now that if you're not sure about DirectBuy don't join its not for all people but I do recommend atleast visiting the open house.

You must be kidding.  I remodelled my own kitchen.  I replaced all the cabinets, put in a new floor, had 3 new electical circuits installed, moved some walls, put in a new window, replaced an outside door with an Anderson slider, new marble countertops and a new dishwasher.  Total price was 12,500 at Home Depot.  this was 5-6 years ago, but it also included paying an electrician and a guy to replace the door and outside work.  How the hell could it cost $50k in material for a kitchen?  I could build half a house for that.

I  built a new home  in jan -13.  used db to do most of  shopping.  the  helper's were very nice and knowledgeable .  also the gal spent a lot of time on designing the cabinets and positioning them so they were more efficient.  one suggested that I take my plans back to the county and see if I could get a wall moved to make the kitchen more room, which I did because it was not a bearing wall. as for the price of the cabinets, yes I  did get top of the line cabinets  only because the gal said they were [cabinet maker] was having a sale promo in a couple months and I could save over60% of the cabinets. also I upgraded on the hinges and sliders for them after being told to wait till a certain time  before ordering as another promo was going to happen. in over all savings on cabinets alone  and  appliances I saved almost $ 40,000.00. I also saved on plumbing as I was able to get most stuff at wholesale price.  I do know that as a matter of fact  on pricing you will save.  db has 3 different price ranges, low, medium, and high. you get what you pay for. I got all solid wood cabinets, not particle board as lowe's or home depot have for less than I could have gotten particle board.  if you are building  or remodeling db is a good deal.  if not   do not use it.

Well, good for you1   We average joes talked into their ridiculously expensive fee to join were deceived.. Your $40,000 saved for kitchen remodel is laughable.. We bought our little house in '88 for $39,900.  and we don't have the incomes to remodel to even save that amount.  With mediocre cabinets from DB and begging we get the designer without their added on $200 fee for designer (after paying 5 1/2 grand to join) the whole experience with DB was miserable.. I was sick to think we paid them $5,490 for nothing.. Missed the 3 day deadline to obtain a refund.. I'm sure the owner would have ignored our attempt to opt out anyway...

I'm not a plant...just found this site and have to laugh at all the complaints.  Most have to do with not getting a free gift.  LOL  $39900 for a house, in 88?  It's all relative to areas, location and what you need.  Why on earth did you sign up?  Did you think you'd find top of the line for the prices you see at Wal-Mart or Lowe's?
For me, I know what it cost to re-do a kitchen or other areas in a home.  I do all my own work, in 2004 I re-modeled my kitchen, through Home Depot, new cabinets, counter tops, flooring and so on.  Not top of the line mind you, but what I could afford at the time and what the house would be able to re-coup when I sold it.  Total cost:  $16500.00 +/-.  Same house, new Italian Porcelain 20x20 tiles, living room, bath, hall and Foyer...Bought from a wholesaler same year, cost:  $2000.00 for about 800sqft.  This year, different home, new tile, same type, 1100sqft bought from DB....$800.00.  You do the math.

I joined Direct Buy in 2002. It think it cost $2000 at the time. I had to renew after 10 years for $150 bucks?  It was a great investment. I recently remodeled my Kitchen, and three full baths. Everything came from Direct Buy and we saved thousands of dollars.  They did everything right during the design phase. I've purchased many things from them from furniture to Fireplace inserts to kitchen appliance, without incident.  The one thing that I've learned these last 11 years is that you must be patient.  This isn't home depot. The stuff isn't stacked up in the back of the showroom.  You place your orders about a month in advance. My garage was stuffed from floor to ceiling with supplies by the time the work was scheduled to begin. I carefully inspected each piece as it arrived. If there was any issue, I called them and it was replaced.  I can't say that we would join at todays price, but I don't understand all the anger and hateful accusations. Not EVERY experience in life is going to be a good one. DO your homework, ask them as many questions as you need to feel comfortable.  Try to negotiate the membership price.   If they refuse to answer to your satisfaction , move on.  Screaming at people and calling them names for the decisions they've made is ridiculous. You make your own happiness.  Try smiling, it works wonders.

we have been members for 6 years. We joined when we purchased a new home and at the same time expanded my husbands business. We literally had our membership fee paid for in a bedroom suite for our new guest room.  But you must do your research because of the fact that you must pay shipping and handling charges. For the most part, if you are looking for a mid-priced item for dirt cheap, you will not get a deal because of most cheaper priced items that you find on line or locally, throw in free shipping.  But if you are ok with affording mid-priced items, you can find high end items through direct buy for the same cost.  That is where you make a killing.  When guests come to our home and see our furniture, they are wowwed cause I can have high end items that i normally would never have been able to afford!  Another great area of purchase is fine jewelry. I purchased a 3 diamond 1.5 cttw ring, f/g, vs1 for $5000.  i got it appraised, the middle stone, alone appraised for$10,500. The entire ring appraised for $15,000. Because it doesnt weigh that much, the shipping charge was not very much.  We furnished our entire house, plus business with gorgeous high end items that we never would have been able to afford going through someone else.  You just need to do your homework!! I give direct buy ten million thumbs up!  (btw, i have absolutely no ties to direct buy)

Sorry to say it but an apprasal of a diamond is worthless. I won a diamond necklace and had it appraise at 5,000. Nobody would ever pay that for the necklace, but the company appraises it at the highest possible value for insurance. Your ring is worth it's weight in metal, unless you sell it on your own. Try and pawn it an see what they would give you!

We have saved large amounts.  We do have to pick up the furniture. However, our savings have been great.  We email the office, talk over the phone, everyone is very polite and helpful.  The people in the loading/storage area are very nice.  I have looked at furniture stores and ordered the same pieces from Direct Buy.  The furniture is very nice, boxed brand new, no scratches. It was a great choice for my family.

First:  it is not possible for a 1 1/2ct total weight diamond, VS1, for 1 of the 3 diamonds to appraise out for $10,500.  Number 2:  diamond color cannot be "F-G" it is either E-F or G-H with approx $1000 difference in price between the two.  So this "quote" you are citing is either made up or non-existent as this is elementary info in the jewelry business.

          Crock,

Are you an actual member or just venting due to Direct Buy's sales tactics?  Your post is rather incoherent.

I joined only after I made the salesman do a mock order for a Flexsteel couch.  When the price plus handling and delivery came in at 60% off retail I was convinced that Direct Buy was legitimate since quality furniture is rarely discounted by more than 45%. I have found it typically to be @ 40% unless it is an overstock, discontinued, or floor model.

I am not rich.  I lived in an apartment for many years and finally purchased an 1800sq home that needed a new kitchen and carpet.  on top of that I needed to furnish nearly the entire house.

I purchsed semi-custom cabinets from Direct Buy for about the same price as the Home Depot Mills Pride ready to assemble stuff (Home Depot no longer sells it)  To give you an idea, it cost me $132 for an 18x36 maple all wood wall cabinet.  The cabinets are really durable and look fantastic.  I saved over $1,000.00 on Shaw carpeting;$600.00 on GE Profile range, dishwasher and microwave;$900 on Crawford Furniture bedroom suite;$800 on Lexington Furniture bedroom suite.

I purchased HON office furniture for less than the cheap disposable stuff sold at Office Depot.  HON furniture is made to last a lifetime.

I have pruchase many other items from Direct Buy at similar savings. The savings have more that repaid the $3,600.00 membership fee and then some.  Additionally, I have found that catalog shopping at Direct Buy probably saved me time compared to shopping at stores or internet.

I am very satisfied with Direct Buy.  The only issues that I have had were the sales pitch and 2 issues with delivery; a lamp was backordered for 4 months and a badly scratched footboard had to be reorderd.

When you wrote,"whoever writes positively on this complaint site are either plushing for their own endowment or very very RICH people digging around for cheaper goods... which they can afford anyway", are you saying that the club works but only for rich people?  That is not a true statement because I am not rich and it turned out to be a great investment for me.

The bottom line is that it impossible to recover the membership cost if you do not take advantage of what the club was designed to do. If you are not planning to spend over $15,000 on remodeling or new furniture, then simply don't join and find something better to do than bash Direct Buy.

I will find out at my appointment today what the membership price is now but from what I am reading, you got in at a very good membership price. I have been reading that people have had to pay $8,000.00 for a membership. I certainly can't pay that. I was invited to come in for the free 90 minute show off hte place and pressure tactics to get me to sign up. All of this because I entered a contest to win a $50,000.00 home makeover. I did win a cruise or airline tickets and this free tour, plus I am still in the sweepstakes for the home makeover! I can't believe my husband has agreed to go with me to this. I totally agree - DB is not for someone looking for low-end stuff that they can just come and pick up off the showroom floor.    You need to educate yourself on how to shop and buy through Direct Buy.  Not everything is the cheapest there, but if you are in the market to build/remodel, or if you flip homes, or if you need new furniture inside or outside, or would like a new outside entertaining area, or any of a number of situations like this, then Direct Buy WILL give you much more for your money than buying retail ever could, even with the shipping/handling and taxes.  Today's public-educated sheeple want everything done for them - those people need to shop somewhere else.  If you want high-end, quality items for your home, office, yard, garage, etc., at a much lower price than retail, and if you're prepared to do your homework to achieve this, then this store is for you.  If not, tell them no, and take your business elsewhere.  It's that simple.  Stop blaming other people because you didn't do your homework before you went to the sales pitch.  I am a regular homeowner who did an extensive remodel/addition, and was overall very happy with Direct Buy.  We bought hardwood flooring, furniture, paint, cabinets, appliances, and many other things, and saved thousands of dollars doing so.  Some things were not competitive, and some things we did not like what was offered, so we went elsewhere, but the point is that we did our homework, both before and during our membership with Direct Buy, and our experience has been positive.  Stop complaining and take responsibility for your own choices and decisions.  Use this store in the way it was intended to be used, and you will be satisfied with your purchases.

You are right.!!!! Our membership cards says we have been members since 1988. Evertime we go into the Direct buy in Orlando they can't believe our membership date but our original company was bought out by Directbuy. I have made money on this investment. We started out with them with a new home that paid for my original investm@ent and the yearly membership fees are paid in savings. The main rule to remember is use the service they offer. Do your homework. For example tv's are the thing not to buy from Directbuy because they are competively priced everwhere. If you buy furniture you save lots. Flooring and tile is another good savings. I had a whole house intercom and security system put in and when the local installer who was the owner and and sold the hardware . When he priced it out and I told him that I would supply the hardware he questioned me where I was getting from. I showed him my costs from DB including the add'l cost for handling and shipping and his cost were $1560 higher in total. He was surprized and gave me the cost for his installation and when we were finished he wanted to know how to join Directbuy.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned that when DB calls you to set up an appointment, they Do NOT let you know that once you are at their establishment, you MUST commit to joining then and there THAT DAY.  Or, you cannot come back for 3 years!

Well, if I had known this information up front, we would have waited 4 - 6 months to go in when we were close to purchasing. Our situation was to go in and get information that day only.  We are in the process of getting plans drawn up for a big addition, we then have to approve plans (2 weeks or so), then approach builders to quote the job ( 3-4 weeks), then look into financing ( 2 - 3 weeks), meet with interior decorator and get a design plan..etc, etc..  We are no where close to picking cabinets, floors etc..let alone if we can afford the addition yet.  Again, we wanted to get some ideas about how it works, then consult with the right builders who would participate with us joining DB.

We really wanted to become members when the time was right for us, but due to false advertising and sneaky marketing, once very potential buyers are shut out for 3 years!!

My husband and I are both salesmen in our fields and get the wholesale/ retail/ mark ups/ shipping  etc..  We get it.  It was a huge blow when she said if you don't do something today, you can't come back in 3 years.
I asked her why the woman (delores) who pressured me to come today didn't mention this critical information over the phone and she never answered me....  Now, I am not waiting 3 years to start my addition in order to wait for them. I told my husband after that crappy experience, that I was happy to pay retail.  We would have spent lots of money there..

After I got up to leave, my husband was the polite one to say goodbye,  I though it was  a poorly run business and if we were ready to join today, maybe there would be more troubles down the road..red flags every where!!

This experience happened today ( 4 hours of our sunny Saturday) in Farmington, Michigan while we paid for a baby sitter on top of that..total bummer and waste of our time.. So pissed!!

Your an idiot.  Get some therapy.  We been members for 6 years,  got our money back when we built our house with the amount we saved.  It's not for everyone but if you planning on renovating or building new you will save some money.  It also serves as a good price comparison.  If I buy something I know I'm not getting ripped off and I'm not going to find it cheaper somewhere else,  and I don't have to look around and compare prices everywhere.

People who can afford the more expensive things can because they don't just throw their money away just because they can. Having said that, we have a good franchise. But I agree to a point that they embellish the truth a little. We did save...just not as much as they said we would. We are frugal and had looked at the cabinetry through Costco. We still saved the difference for our member fees. We then were able to upgrade our wood floors from what we would have gone with without direct buy, got a KILLER DEAL on our appliance package, and saved enough thousands to get all the little things we wanted with our remodel and still had savings left over. Granted it wasn't the amount they pitched and that didn't make us super happy with them. But the owner and his staff were extremely helpful and provided awesome customer service (I'm hard to please regarding customer service). I also agree that unless you're planning on building or doing a  remodel it would not be a sound business decision to join. You can go with anything from low-high quality merchandise and thus controlling your savings amount that way. Somethings are worth it....some aren't. You have to decide.

I think you're misunderstanding what she wrote. I'm sure it wasn't $50k for just kitchen cabinets. She said it was an entire kitchen remodel. So that would mean floors, sink, cabinets, countertops, appliances, and could also mean there were other modifications done such as relocation of the water and drain systems.

I've been a member for 2 years now and I haven't bought much, but what I did buy covered our initial membership fee plus some. We bought our house as-is and it needed more efficient windows installed as well as an air conditioner. Home Depot quoted us a little under $6000 for the windows installed (16 of them) and another $1500 for the AC. With materials bought and labor contracted through our nearest DB (Olathe, KS) we paid half that.

Unlike what you have said, I'm neither wealthy or getting a kick-back from DB. I'm a 30 year old military member that pays way more than I should on child support every month. I pretty much live paycheck to paycheck with a little excess that I throw into savings. I'm not saying people haven't been ripped off by their local franchise but I am saying that I don't think it's every franchise owner that operates that way.

When we went through our open house our franchise owner identified the fact that there are some areas in the store that provide much more savings than other areas and that we were encouraged to take a better deal elsewhere if it presented itself to us. If your local franchise owner didn't do that for you, then they are doing it wrong.

Bottom line, I'm sorry if your experience with them was bad, but I don't think that's the case with all locations. We have more things that we need done this summer so I just renewed my membership for the next year. Take into account both the good and bad reviews you read and couple that with the impression you get from the club itself when you make your decision about this membership. Knowledge is key. Inform yourself as well as you can.

First things first... how can you say that you pay way too much child support? you are only required to pay a percentage of what you make; which by the way is never enough to provide for the child to live the same standard as you live. Your membership fee alone would provide, class trip, sports equipment, scout uniform, eletronic calculator, art supplies, Rx, doctors co-pay, the care-givers lost wages for doctors and teachers  appts. Sorry to vent as I sit here as one  with over $15,000 back child support due!

I joined DP hoping to save money as I repair things that I have had to put on the back burner until the kids got older. I met a DB rep at a Home & Garden Show in Richmond, Va. who promised a free tablet ( which the oldest child needs for her senior year; becaues I scheduled my appt w/ him I got $200 restaurant card [ yipee, eat out time w/ the kids] I received my Tablet and an extra $100 restaurant card after joining!! I became concerned after being unable to register the $300 in restaurant cards; when I opened the tablet, it was scratched and obviously used. I called to set up my orintation I asked if I could bring the tablet back and was told yes.

While waiting for the orientation I asked the young lady at the desk to register one of the cards for me so I could take the kids out for dinner, after clicking around as I looked over her shoulders  at her screen, she looked down and did not reply when I called her attent to the fact that regardless of the zip cod you put in the same restaurants come up - most that I have never hear of in my neighborhood. Some of the restaurants require you to spend $100 and they will give you $50 off !?!??

I pray and believe that the DB recommended contractors do not operate in this smae frame.

Have to agree.  We too have been member for about 5 years.  We did an extensive remodel and have purchased many other items.  We are avid researchers and shoppers so we compared the BEST prices we could have obtained locally or online to what we paid (apples to apples with shipping & tax).  We recouped our membership with our kitchen alone (and we didn't even use them for the cabinets!).  We have a bedroom set on order and with shipping we're saving 45%.  We have purchase appliances, window coverings, flooring, furniture,  bedding, electronics, mouldings, tile, lighting, hardware, and small appliances.  We have never had any problems other than items being discontinued and unable to be purchased.  It's not beneficial for emergency purchases (i.e dishwashers goes out & need new one ASAP) but for planned projects it rocks!

With that said, we WERE told about the service fee & shipping before purchasing our membership. We do buy things that are higher end/quality so for us we continue to save.  If you buy lower end items and are not doing a major project then this would not be a membership for you!

I agree with Zinderella.  I too have been a member for over 5 years.  I also think DirectBuy is good to ensure you do not "impulse buy".  I like the idea of shopping around, finding what I want and then going to the Showroom (OR INTERNET) and finding out if they can get me the item I want.   I just retired from the Army after 27 years.  My last three years (YES 3 YEARS) were spent in Iraq.  My husband - not wanting to do without me came as a contractor (not the best pay - but at least we were together in a little trailer - 40'X10').  Yes, LOVE DOES GROW in little spaces.  Anyway, we returned home to our lovely retirement home only to discover it was terribly vandalized and bulgarized.  As a matter of fact the pack of young adults decided to use our house as a "hide out" or home base.  The neighbors were paid to keep the house looking lived in but instead took the money and did not even mow the grass.  Anyway, the insurance company would not cover our claim (over $70K) because we didnot change the insurance policy when my husband left the US.  SO we have a house with no Occupancy Permit so no home.  After spending 3 years living in a 10' X 40' trailer with my husband and no kitchen, real bathroom, etc. I said I would not live in that house until I could make it a home.  We had some savings and bought another house just to live in until we could get the other house back into livable condition.  With the housing market so bad we got a home we can sell in a few years.  BUT we needed to get furniture (all furniture was destroyed).  We did not even have a mattress to sleep on.  Most of the linens were destroyed.  The only thing they did not mess with was my kitchen stuff.  My husband and I prioritized our needs and started going to furniture stores.  We wanted to pick out the furniture then check with Direct Buy for the best price (shipping included).  We saved over 50 percent on most items.  I have a new washer and dryer (nearly 30% less than any store) it is a new model LG and no shipping to my home.  I love my furniture and everyone in the family cannot believe we were able to save this much money.  Yes we had some savings.  But in this economy we could not afford to spend more than we should.  YES you should shop around.  Get the manufacture information (including order numbers).  Tell them you need to shop around and if they decide to put the furniture or appliance on sale you will be back.  DO NOT SETTLE for junk.  I still have no living room furniture.  I waited for nearly a year for a dining room table ( but I wanted a specific table big enough for my entire family and 10 inches wider than the normal table.  It was well worth it.  We had 14 people the table for Christmas and all food was in the center of the table.  My only advise is to not settle - shop around.  Do not purchase without finding the exact make and model at a store.  Once you see what you are looking at in person, you may discover it is not what you wanted.  We originally wanted a specific manufacturer of bedroom furniture, but when we saw it at a 'chain furniture store A****y, we discovered we did not like the quality and went up in quality to a better set and we still paid less than the store price.  No shipping charges, and it arrived in less than 2 weeks.  After not having a bedroom for 3 years, 2 weeks was a piece of cake.  YES the initial purchase of the membership is high - but our first purchase was our daughter's wedding invitations.  We saved over 70%.  Our daughter found the invitations she wanted at a local store in her state.  I ordered them in our state, had them sent to the warehouse and picked them up.  You need to have at least 1 month for this customized service.  But it was worth it.  We decided to have me pickup the invitations and send out to family and friends.  I spent more on stamps than I did on the invitations, RSVP cards, etc.  After the initial membership is paid, then you only pay $200 annually to keep the membership ($90 more than COSTCOs Executive membership).

I am a former DB member, my husband and I were members for 6 years and signed up after we purchased a larger home.  DB is like any warehouse club (Sam's, BJ's, etc.) you have to shop around, know what you are buying.  You can't sign up and think that you will get everything you are looking for cheaper.  Everything a particular company/vendor offers is not offerred through DB.  There are alot of things that DB vendors offer to their members that are no longer offerred for sale outside the club.  It makes it difficult to comparison shop.

Ashley Furniture makes cheap, low grade furniture.  The type of furniture that is sold in a group, advertised in a group is junk.  It is not well made, when it gets old (2 - 3 years if your lucky) the polyfiber fill they stuff it with falls and the cushions and the material over it wrinkles and the cardboard it's made with loses it's shape and it just generally looks awful.  Do yourself a favor and do not waste your money on Ashley Furniture.  DB is not just for high quality super expensive items for rich people.  You have to do the work, I saved about $15k furnishing my new house and I purchased high quality, with everything you have to research and be selective.

The Club is a scam and I know because I worked for 3 Different Locations. You would not believe how much money the sales reps make. $125 out of the avg 5k per membership. I was on the inside and back in 2000 I would make $300 per sale if someone paid there membership in full (the reps call it a PIF) for Paid In Full and I was compensated $200 if the new members financed. I sold on avg of 40 memberships per month and made about $120k a year.Since they are all Franchised the Greedy owners can set your commission structure and they play favorites. The owners encourage competition and the owners make about 75% of the HUGE FEE. They pay a royalty fee of 22% to the corporate in Merryville Indiana (Scam Central).

Some will even take less if you get them in the back and offer to pay in full. The greedy scumbags in central California charge about 7K to join and pay their reps about $150 per sale.

I COULD GO ON FOR HOURS AND PROBABLY WILL AT A LATER DATE BUT THEY HAVE ALREADY SCREWED ME OUT OF TIME AND MONEY. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MAKING MONEY IF YOU ARE HONEST BUT THESE GUYS MAKE FUN OF THE GUESTS THAT COME IN AND I EVEN WORKED WITH SEVERAL BLACK REPS THAT WOULD ALWAYS COMPLAIN WHEN THEY "GOT STUCK" SELLING A BLACK COUPLE BECAUSE THEY SAID THAT THEY KNEW BEFORE HAND THAT BLACK PEOPLE WOULD NOT QUALIFY CREDIT WISE....

THE FINANCE COMPANY BETA FINANCE CHARGES FROM 18% TO 25% AND THEY RATE EACH FINANCE SO IF THE NEW MEMBER DOESN'T CREDIT QUALIFY THE SCUMBAG OWNERS ONLY PAY OUT $50 AND BETA PAYS THEM IN FULL....IT'S JUST GREED AT ITS PUREST AND RAWEST FORM

From the front of the store to the back of the store it's all one big scam. THEIR CLAIM TO FAME IS THAT THEY CUT OUT THE MIDDLE MAN....WAKE UP THEY HAVE JUST REPLACE THE MIDDLE MAN WITH DIRECT BUY....SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM  OH YEAH 1 LAST LITTLE TID BIT OF INFORMATION...I CAN PERSONALLY TESTIFY THAT THE "HANDLING FEE" OF 6% TO 9% IN SOME STATES IS ALL MADE UP AND THE SCUMBAG OWNERS MAKE ALL THAT MONEY IN ADDITION TO WHAT GOES THROUGH THE CLUB IN SALES VOLUME.

HANDLING FEE.....C'MON PEOPLE THEY DO HAVE REGULAR EMPLOYEES THAT ARE NOT 1099'D AND ARE W-2'D, THEY HAVE PHONE REPS THAT BOOK THE MEMBERSHIP APPOINTMENT AND REPS THAT SELL ON THE FLOOR. THEY ARE ALL COMPENSATED OUT OF THE HUGE MEMBERSHIP FEE. .08% X $250,000 IN MERCHANDISE PER MONTH. DO THE MATH. THEY COULD SELL THE MEMBERSHIP FOR $2,500 AND STILL MAKE A KILNING BUT THE NAME OF THE GAME IS EGO AT DIRECT BUY. ONCE A YEAR THE OWNERS MEET TO HOB KNOB AND COMPARE CLOTHING AND WHO HAS THE PRETTIEST WIFE OR BOY FRIEND IF YOUR GAY LIKE THE OWNER OF THE MOUNTAIN VIEW DIRECT BUY MARK...THEY GIVE AWAY BRAND NEW MERCEDES AND BMW CARS AS IF THEY WERE HALLOWEEN TREATS. THEY ALL COMPARE HOW MUCH MONEY THAT THEY MAKE.

ONCE AGAIN THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MAKING MONEY THERE ARE EVEN SOME REALLY HONEST OWNERS OUT THERE. BUT IN THE NEW-AMERICA OF TODAY WHERE PRESIDENTS ARE NOT ELECTED BUT "S"ELECTED BEFORE BY THE CORPORATE HANDLERS DIRECT BUY IS JUST PART OF THE PROBLEM AND NOT PART OF ANY SOLUTION. VERY FEW PEOPLE BENEFIT FROM DIRECT BUY AND THEY GIVE NOTHING BACK TO THE PEOPLE THEY LITERALLY LIE TO AND DEFRAUD.

NO ONE OUT THERE ON THIS SITE CAN CHALLENGE ME BECAUSE I KNOW SEVERAL OWNERS AND HAVE BEEN ON THE INSIDE FOR MANY YEARS. AFTER I MADE 12K FOR 6 MONTHS MY COMMISSION STRUCTURE WAS QUICKLY CHANGED TO BENEFIT THAT OF THE OWNER AND HIS WIFE WHO NEED ONE MORE SURGERY ON HER FACE TO FIX THE LAST BOTCHED SURGERY.

SURE I LOVED MAKING THAT KIND OF MONEY AND WHO WOULDN'T I THOUGHT I WAS SELLING A LEGITIMATE PRODUCT UNTIL AFTER YEAR 3 I FOUND OUT HOW IT ALL WORKED AFTER ONE OWNER ( WHO DID LOT'S OF DRUGS) WENT ON A COCAINE RANT ABOUT "HOW MUCH HE MADE FROM JUST SHOWING IDIOTS HOW TO BUY CHEAPER FURNITURE" IT WAS THE YEARLY 8% THAT IS THE REAL MONEY.... SOME CLUBS SELL BETWEEN 5 TO 10 MILLION A YEAR IN INVENTORY THAT NETS THE OWNERS ABOUT $600K PER YEAR THEN ADD IN THE 5K  PER MEMBERSHIP FEE AND YOU WILL SEE WHAT A CASH COW THIS BUSINESS IS. ONCE YOU ARE AN OWNER YOU DO NOT WANT ANOTHER DIRECT BUY IN YOUR AREA BECAUSE YOU WILL LOSE POTENTIAL MEMBERS LIKE THE CASE OF THE 2 PORTLAND, OREGON CLUBS. THEY HAVE THE SAME OWNER. THAT'S RIGHT WHY OWN 1 DIRECT BUY WHEN YOU CAN OWN 3?????????

Jimmy...I applaud you for speaking the truth about this fraudulent company.  Yes, I'm a disgruntled member. First and foremost because I tried to cancel my membership the day after signing and they would not refund my money...Why not?!  If it's such a GREAT membership WHY DO THEY NOT LET PEOPLE OUT THAT WANT OUT?  All they care about is getting your signature on that contract and getting your money.  Secondly, the savings are not what was pitched in their presentaion.  They flaunted flyers during their hyped up sales presentation comparing their prices against big box stores retail prices...why not compare them aginst the big box store Sales prices? Because yoiu would quickly see their is little to no savings at all. Some of their prices are actually higher than Best Buy or Lowes...how is that possible??  A question they refuse to answer.
I researched 5 items (65" TV, fridge, carpet, hardwood flooring, washing machine) and the only thing DB was cheaper on was the washing machine and only by $50 on a $1000 washer.  Hardwood and carpet can both be purchased cheaper at FloorTrader.com.  Maybe you can buy high end items for mid level prices, but I'm a bargin shopper looking to SAVE money, not just put it into a slightly better item.  If you want to flaunt yourself as a savings club then save people money.a $50k kitchen for only $30k or a $20k bedroom for $15k.  This thing has scam written all over it....don't fall for it or you'll be STUCK like me and out $4500.  ENSURE YOU READ THE FINE PRINT ON THEIR CONTRACT!!!  I now let EVERYONE I know what a ripoff they are!!

It's so obvious that DIRECT BUY is a BIG SCAM. Lots of negative postings than the positive ones. I am also a victim of their scam although until now I haven't finished paying my membership yet. I wanted out few days after I joined when I realized I can save much better without buying from them, but they won't let me so I still owe some membership fees. Everyday Beta Finance keeps calling me 4-7x a day for the last three years now trying to collect my remaining balance. I can even barely afford to pay my mortgage since I'm unemployed now. Well anyway for those of you who are contemplating to become a member listen to the majority of disgruntled members and previous workers of the company. Direct Buy is really a fraudulent company and cannot be trusted.

Your statement of "in every company some one is due to get rich i cant change that  but my question is can i save on building my house and refurniting it?

YOU SAID IT PERFECTLY!  This is true with ALL businesses -- only the owner gets rich!  Paralegals at my job bill our clients at $250 per hour (approximately a half million annually), yet a paralegal's pay is around $70k!  Where does that half million go that the paralegal made?  - To the owners, of course!  THAT'S THE WAY THE "BREAD" CRUMBLES!  Here's the thing, though: if you can save yourself money, in spite of the owner getting rich, don't we all win?!

Your question of can you save on building your house is the KEY question. Yes, I am completely convinced that you can -- because you're BUILDING a house.  If you're going to purchase only a washer/dryer and a sofa, your membership will likely not be worth it but if you're purchasing floors, cabinets, furniture, etc., the membership will pay for itself before you've even finished building.

I have a decent sized kitchen where I'm going floor to ceiling on some cabinets, with all kinds of addons, and we're not even going to get to $20k with custom cabinet builders using "real" wood..... Even homes with twice the square footage, don't have kitchens as large as ours.

Now we're stuck with a remaining payable membership amount of around $3,000 still since we couldn't afford to pay anymore.

Agreed. We have been members for over 5 years and there is a specific group of people that this "buying service" is good for. We are those people. If you are: not making big, very big or HUGE purchases for your home, this may be a good fit. AND no mistaking that DIRECTBUY WILL save you money if you are refurnishing your home and/ or renovatin. Especially true if you want the most for your money like furniture!!!  If time is a big concern (which is a contradiction if you are a well researched person) or service is important. I too redid my kitchen and the Full Custom Cherry Cabinets ($14,200delivered) were cheaper than any retail/ wholeser out there  $25,000-$40,000!

Sorry, but there is no way you got a $56,000 kitchen for $13k.  I was a member for 10 years and while their savings on furniture is pretty good everything else, including appliances, can be obtained cheaper elsewhere.  Electronics are actually cheaper buying from stores than DirectBuy and they even tell you that at their presentations.  It's not a great membership unless you furnish the whole house and even then it is questionable because you have to buy from a catalog, which is a pain in the neck.

Jimmy , everything you said and everything negative everyone else said is nothing but the true. I thought it was only my club.
I wish I had read all of these comments before I went to the open house.
I also should have followed my instincts on that day. When I went to the open house, during the fall of 2011, and heard that you only had that one chance to sign in, and that once you left the club you were not allowed to sign, it made me think that that was the catch. It took me hours to make up my mind. Everybody, including the owner, came to convince me of the benefits of being a member and I finally gave in. THE WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!!!!!
I have only purchased a bedroom set from them which cost me around $2,900 including shipping, handling and taxes (shipping alone was $600, can you believe it?). The next day I went on line and found the exact same set, same magnufacturer, Magnussen, same pieces, bed, mirror and dresser, high chest and one bedside table-for only $2,000 including everything. Shipping was free.
As per their policy they were supposed to give me back the difference but they decided not to honor it because the cheaper price was from the internet.
I received this purchase on January/2012, I had lots of problems with it. The storage foot board that I purchased, under recommendation of the Office Manager, didn't fit under my mattress. The delivery guys scratched off one side of the dresser; the mirror itself is of very poor quality. No matter how often I clean it, it is always foggy. Some of the drawers don't close all the way, some of them require two hands to open.
Six months later I'm still dealing with them to correct the issues. It's been six months of hell, making hundreds of phone calls, giving hundreds of explanations and having constant arguments. I have tried to speak to the owner to see if I can sign out my membership but to no avail. This is the same owner who dedicated so much time to me to convince me to sign in.
I thought it was only my club, the Brooklyn-Queens Club in New York located in Queens, the one with irresponsible people, but I see now that it is most of them.
People, DO NOT ACQUIRE A DIRECT BUY MEMBERSHIP!!! Yes, it is a SCAM!!!! Buy from the stores when they have sales.
Do not buy from this manufacturer either, "MAGNUSSEN", the quality is poor and they don't work with you.
It is a pitty that this club is in business. Needless is to say that I haven't purchased anything else from them but still I'm paying $158.10/month to cover my membership.
Hope someone learns from my mistakes. Take care......

we purchased our membership in 2006, paid the  $4990. in cash. We were excited about the Sony t.v. they advertised for $2000. savings, that was 1/3 of our membership, no brainer, right. Wrong, 1 week later we attempted to purchase that t.v.,  Sony had pulled their deal, or so DB said. Ok, was a shock, but we were believers, we purchased a Thermopedic, King mattress, great mattress by the way, 8 years old, still wonderful, but it should be. The delivery alone was almost $200., not what we were told. It left my husband and I fighting. My daughter got the same mattress from a regular store and paid $400. less. Now, the clincher, my husband lost his job 2 years ago, I called DB, afraid of losing our membership that we paid in full up front. I'll never forget the sweet soul on the other end explaining that we could never lose our membership just contact them when we are on our feet again. Our membership has been cancelled.I won't even get into the Kitchen Aid pots and pans, took forever to get, only to have to go through hell because they mistakenly ordered them in red. I tried to figure this whole thing out this morning, as we are finally out of the hole, and the reviews alone, have brought back the horrible reality, we made a huge mistake, and I would like to mention that in 2006, we were assured that they were opening a branch in Delaware. The closest branch, 6 years later, is still an hour away in Pa. They should be able to afford a branch on every corner. Word of mouth, hopefully will keep others from feeling the same sting that so many of us are.

        Dear Mayra,
I'm sorry you had this terrible, very expensive experience.  I attended an "Open House" yesterday and immediately saw it was a classy sales pitch.  Many years ago, taking some time off from college, I was in direct sales.  I stuck around because I was amused at how well the salesman (franchise owner) pitched the con.
The idea that you have just this one time to join is of course nonsense.  Anyone who declines and then shows up next week, next month, or whenever, and offers the $5K – do you think DB will say, “We can’t take your money.  You lost your chance.”???
I am refurnishing my den – have a deal in place (online) for about $3K.  I thought maybe DB could save me some money.  They actually don’t do business with the manufacturer of the furniture I want, and obviously I would not have saved anything anyway with the high membership fee.  The salesman went down from $5990 to $4990 and finally to $3990, but I told him I’m broke (I would have paid cash up front) so they showed me the door with no “free gift.”
This may be a good deal if you’re young and furnishing an entire house and/or redoing your kitchen IF you comparison shop everything, which of course you can’t do because your are signing up blind.  But for the average person who is pressured into signing (you were under the hot lights for how many hours?!) it does not make sense.  It especially doesn’t make sense if you can’t pay the full fee up front, because the interest will add unbelievable $$$.  Actually thousands – even without compounding 17.5% on $5990 is $1,048.25.  You can be sure the interest is compounded, no matter what they may say initially.
Chris with a  6,000-sq. ft. home – obviously with more money than most of us – believes DB saved a lot of $$$.  People who believe that probably would be dismayed if they were to comparison shop their purchases.
BTW, Thanks, Frank, for the inside dope.

I was at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo yesterday and my wife calls over to me that she had "won" a free 8 day cruise. It was a slot machine type thing . Funny, all three items weren't the same but she "won" anyway. They wanted a "completely refundable" $20 deposit to confirm we would go to the presentation to see a presentation and pick up our prize.  I did a quick search on my iPhone and came across these posts. I asked if everyone wins and the floor rep said no. I'm not buying it. My wife and I walked away. Out of curiosity I looped around to see who else won. Looked like everyone over 30 was winning. The floor rep was obviously compensated on how many qualified people they could get to go to the presentations. If this is how they get people in the door, how can they be reputable?

It's a pity that your grammar and spelling are so bad. People need to realize that when someone posts something that has a lot of grammar and spelling errors, it takes away from their credibility. Your opinion means less when those errors are present because it shows that you may not have the intellectual capacity to make a truly informed decision.

If you want people to take you seriously, at the very least use a text editing program to build your post, run grammar and spell check on it, then copy the edited product and past it into the post field. Then reread it afterward.

My wife and I have been with DirectBuy since about 2005. I sometimes have mixed feelings about our membership, I intially got the membership when we initiated the bulding of our new home. Being a member have saved us about $50,000.00. I tell others that ask me about the membership that unless you are making a large purchase or planning to build a new home the membership is not worth it.

The Club is for those who will nitially save a large amount of money on their initial purchases, between our cabinets, plumbing, carpet, and other major purchases we were able to upgrade our countertops and cabinets too, like granite countertops for our entire home.

There is a certain level of frustration though, customer service at our particular location has been lacking, we found ourselves getting involved in resolving issues more than we should have to, which creates an high level of frustration. However, if you are not willing to do the planning, research and comparisons before you buy DirectBuy is not for you.

Also DirectBuy sells a higher grade items like furniture they don't usually sell press wood furniture which is cheaper in regular furniture stores.

The key is to make sure you are saving over the long run do not buy the membership for $4000.00 + if you are making purchase for less, I suggest that you make sure your initial purchase will be enough to have the membership pay for itself, ever purchase after that should be an additional savings.

We were able to build our 6000 square foot home for about 30 to 40% less than it would normally cost. We continue to work with DirectBuy because we see the benifits and savings, however it comes with tremendous frustration but I would rather be a little frustrated while saving thousands.

I continue to be a frustrated but money saving Direct Buy Member.

I too joined DirectBuy because I am building my own home.  I am not sure what you are speaking of when you mention 30-40% savings.  I have not seen any of that.  In fact, my contractor discount at my local lumber yards and supply houses gets me cheaper prices than DirectBuy can get me.  I have compared their prices to my plumbing fixtures and my prices were easily 18% less than DirectBuy, not including their 8% upcharge.  There Duracast structural columns were all $75 more expensive than what I can get for Permacast columns which are a better brand.  Their siding prices are very high.  Simply put, I have found that their building materials are not even worth my time - they are more expensive and their lead times are ridiculous and conflict with my project plans.

        So far, I have ordered:

*7 Thermatru exterior doors and a Greentree door.  The distributor provided me with the incorrect RO sizes and caused me to have to either increase or reduce the framed openings, all at my expense.  Also, the Thermatru hardware was scratched and one of the units came in damaged which deleayed my project a bit.   It took forever to received the initial doors as well.  However, I did save $1800, so it was almost worth the frustration but not really.

*2 fireplaces.  This was a horrible experience.  I worked out the order with the distributor and odered them.  Two days later, DB told me that the manufacturer no longer uses that distributor and I will be ordering directly from the manufacturer.  That is when the problems begain.  The manufacturer vetted my order and mentioned that I didnt need to order a particular part.  great.  The items arrived and I had my sub contractor install, but it was missing peices and also had other parts that I did not need.  Long story short, I am sitting with $250 worth of parts that I do not need.  The manufacture wants a 20% restock fee and shipping to take them back, even though it is their original distributor that screwed up the order...  Nonsense!  I am not even sure what I saved because nobody around me carries this brand...

        * I ordered $6000 worth of Interior and Exterior lights back in early June.  I am still waiting for 25% of the order to ship.  I was told back order til mid August.  Now I am being told mid-September.  However, I did save about 10% on what I was seeing in the stores even with my contractor discount.  $600 is not worth the headache for me though.

        *  I ordered Omega cabinets.  Suposedly really high end and retail for $60000 and I paid $170000.  I suspect I probably could have gotten them for low 20's at a normal store and not had to deal with the lack of knowledge with one particular kitchen staff members.  Dealing with this person was like pulling my own teeth.  Actually pulling my own teeth would have been more enjoyable.  If took MONTHS of back and forth emails, meetings, phone calls, etc before we had a final design and purchase.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that everything comes in okay.  I doubt it though.

        *  I ordered custom bathroom vanities and two of them were damaged during manufacturing.  Who knows what the savings was on these, but I suspect I saved a little.

        *  I ordered a garage door and saved about $750.  There is a 6 week lead time, so it is not really worth the savings to me on this but I am trying to save as much as I can to absorb the membership fee cost.

        *  I am now pricing out tile and they are DEFINITELY NOT cheaper than my local supplier.  Also, they have horrible lead times.

        *  I am not ordering the appliances from DirectBuy because they are more expensive than my local store.

Long story short, DirectBuy is cheaper on some items but not everything.  Ordering is a drag and the lead times are ridiculous.  Also, returning something or getting credits is a nightmare.  We are hoping to see larger savings when we purchase the furniture, but are skeptical.  I would not use them again for any of the building material; they do not have the local knowledge to handle a customer of my volume and technical requirements.

Hi, I've been a member for just over a year. Custome built home! My membership was paid on my first item. Thermidor fridge sold at other stores was $14000.00, I purchased it at DB for $4400.00. If you're looking for "cheap" items this membership is not for you. I have saved over $50k in a year. You must do your research and spend the time getting to know your pricing before jumping the gun. Stop bashing the company because you can't afford a membership. I'm a single mom always looking for quality items at a lower price, not cheap items that last a short time.

        DK replies to Chris
PLEASE READ what Chris says, as he is pretty much spot on.  If you are wanting to join DirectBuy to save a little here and a little there, it is PROBABLY NOT worth it, especially since their initial fee seems to have jumped up quite a bit.  It is best for those that are building or just bought a new house and want to purchase multiple, larger ticket items.  And no offense, but probably best for upper middle to higher income households as that's where most of their truly larger saving items are priced for.

Anyway, we joined in 05 and paid around $3000 fee for the first 3 years and $159 a year for the the next 7 or something like that.  We have definitely made our fees back in savings, but it is a pretty big hassle and our store in PA is really not that helpful.  The people are nice, however.  Plus, we live in DE (sales tax free) and anything that ships to the Club in PA is charged taxes.  We were also given the line when we joined about them probably opening up a DE store in the near future to avoid those sales taxes...nothing yet.

Normal things like electronics, appliances, and some of the lower priced items are just not worth it through DB.  After fees, shipping, etc, you are better off buying at a local retailer (better/easier returns too) or online.  There are times, however, that DB runs promotions in their catalog where you can find good pricing on those items mentioned and it COULD be worth it.  Keep in mind, the margins on those items (electronics/appliances) are already pretty tight, so DB isn't going to help you much with pricing...again, unless it's a special.  The "specials" however, are usually on items that are closeouts or models that are being replaced.  That said, we did save money on a couple flat screen TV's by paying attention to the sales and making sure they shipped tax free to our house.

You also need to have the TIME to deal with everything that comes with DB.  My wife and I both work, so we really can't do anything except on Saturdays (our DB store is closed Sun/Mon) and guess what, Saturday's are usually the busiest.  Our very first order (blinds) was messed up and it took forever to resolve and it was NOT our fault.  One of the customer service reps at our store messed up the order.  They wanted to charge us twice to fix and I would have none of it, so the owner finally stepped in and relented/resolved the issue.  It was so frustrating for a first experience that when we bought our dining room set we ended up just getting directly through Kincaid's store...big mistake and my wife and I got in a fight about because that purchase alone would have knocked out our initiation fee.  She just wanted a dining room set (quickly) and I wanted to save the $$$. Ha.

There are also many times that samples of carpet, wood, fabric, etc. are not available to view.  It is very frustrating when you go into your Club and want to finalize a purchase, only to find out you CAN'T see the materials on what you want to buy.  This just happened to us.  We got an email from DB on a bedroom set we thought we liked and it was a really great deal (furniture has huge mark up), but our DB store did NOT have the wood sample and we wanted to make 99% we liked the wood color.  We asked them to get a sample and it just came, but guess what...the furniture is no longer listed for sale.  VERY FRUSTRATING.

We did have good experience with ordering stuff when we remodeled our master bath and for carpet we've used in the basement and other areas.  They have a local installer that is good.  Again, it's higher priced cabinetry, tub, granite that we used, so it was worth it.  Tile was not, we got a better deal at a local retailer and could actually VIEW the tile because they had in stock...DB, as mentioned, often does not have the sample you want to see.  It's mostly catalogs and pictures...not real helpful when about to drop a lot of $$$ on boxes of tile or something else expensive.

Finally, I would point out that since these are franchises, it very well could depend on the store you are using as to how helpful, or not, "sleazy", or not, that DB store is.  Our DB store would probably sit somewhere in the middle.  That said, I think our store actually has been taken back by Corp DB, as the franchise owner's are no longer involved per my understanding.  I'm waiting for the letter or email saying our store is closing and our new store is an hour away. Ha.

Overall, I would ONLY recommend to someone to join if they are looking to spend quite a bit of money over the next few years, so they can recover their fee.  Again, think BIGGER TICKET items.  Also, I would highly recommend trying to negotiate the "Fee", if you go to an open house.  In this economy, they need you more than you need them.

I'll echo Chris's comment to close..."continue to be a frustrated, but money saving DB member".  However, when our time is up, I'll be hard pressed to continue our membership if they ask for "thousands" again to re-up.  Good Luck!

We went to a presentation tonight and did not sign up.  We were given a raincheck for the tablet and a restaurant.com card.  You go to the site, enter the codes on the card and are able to purchase discounted restaurant vouchers. We are waiting to see if they ever get in any of the tablets-supposed to check back Friday.

My wife and I attended a DirectBuy of Southern Maryland Open House in Lanham, MD on Saturday August 4th. We have friends and relatives that are members that have been very pleased with their membership, purchases, and participation in the DirectBuy program. Because I will be retiring next year from my Pentagon job and moving to Ohio to be next to my Grandchildren, we decided to attend the open house for more information in preparation for our move. We have already purchased a new home in Chillicothe, Ohio and will need to do some heavy remodeling prior to moving into our new home next year, so this DirectBuy plan makes good sense and reason for joining. We were both quite impressed with the presentation we participated in last Saturday in Lanham and only reinforced our plans to join. At the end of the presentation and our one-on-one with the Director of the Lanham facility, I told her that we were very interested in joining but needed to wait until next year after our move and visit the Columbus store. I stated that I wanted to visit the Columbus DirectBuy and share the great presentation we received in Maryland and join the Ohio facility at that time. We were then told that we would be exempt from membership for life if we did not join that day at the Southern Maryland facility! I was shocked to hear this news!!! I told her that we would never have attended if we had known about this lifetime exemption for membership. I am writing to you because of our disappointment in this information. Why were we not told this on the phone interview for the appointment and in the paperwork sent to us for the Open House appointment? If we would have known, we would definitely not have attended if we had been provided this terrible restriction! I would strongly encourage DirectBuy to notify their prospective Open House invitees about this restriction so others are not surprised about this disappointing restriction.I have served this country for 33 years Active Duty military. My lifetime service and family sacrifice with my military compatriots have provided a country free for company's like DirectBuy to flourish in a free and open-market democratic society. Trust me, there are many American companies that appreciate our sacrifice and provide our dedicated military members special benefits and we do appreciate that recognition. I'm sorry that DirectBuy does not provide upfront information about the membership exemption and does not recognize our military servicemen and their family sacrifices!Sincerely and Respectfully, Mike  P.S. And to add to my concerns, the "$249 New Android" Touchpad we received for attending the Open House is just another disappointment. All you have to do is Google the Android Tablet we received on the internet and you will see that it is a useless toy due to internal electronics. After I charged it up last Sunday, I was shocked that it died in less than 30 minutes due to a drained battery. You will see on the internet that this is the complaint by every owner of this Tablet. Why would DirectBuy provide a piece of malware as a gift to potential members as an incentive to attend the Open House? I'm sure that everyone that received this "gift" are experiencing the same deficient battery issue. Please respect your potential new members and don't give out anymore of these broken tablets. Can anyone else confirm my issues with Direct Buy marketing?  Thanks, Mike

I got sucked in to DB crap...I paid initial deposit, and the rest financed for 2 years. I found out shortly after that I can get most of the things I was planing to buy cheaper elsewhere. I called to try and cancel my membership. I spoke to the owner, and he kept going in circles not agreeing to cancel. I am just wondering if anyone just tried to stop paying the monthly payments, and what were the results?

Hey Mike:  Don't worry about it.  Since you have family that are members, just ask them to "buy" you stuff as a "gift" for your house and there ya go.  DirectBuy allows their members to buy gifts for family, etc.  They should be able to ship it to you, as well.  :)

And I agree with you on the terrible practice of NOT telling attendees of their presentation that it's a "one time only" visit...sign up that day or no dice.  Really bad marketing.

I am a direct buy member and did a kitchen remodel that more than paid for my membership. I did not like that I had to make a decision that day. The reason they want you to sign up that day, I think, is many people who do join would not if they were given time to think about it. I'm sure the owner getsmost or all of your membership cost and if you sign up in Ohio he/she gets nothing. I would bet if you tried to joined in Ohio they would not turn you down.
Has anyone been able to join after their initial presentation?
I have saved on many wedding gifts, appliances and furnature but not everything, you do have to shop around.

              Dear Mike,
You wrote several months ago, so possibly you will never see my response.  But it is NOT true that you can never join DB in Ohio, having declined the presentation in Maryland.  That is part of the sales pitch.  99 percent of people who “want to think it over” end up passing on any and every sales presentation, so they (and all hard sales) try to close you on the spot.  Also it is a franchise so the people in MD won’t get anything from OH.  When you get to Ohio and offer DB $5,000, do you really think they will tell you to go away?  You can join anytime.
But read some of these warnings!  BEFORE you sign the DB contract, shop around and see what things would cost without DB.  What they tell you about 70% savings is just part of the scam.  And consider whether or not you would want to purchase everything without seeing the product in front of you.  You will have to buy from catalogs and what is delivered may not be what you thought you were buying.
Thanks for your service.  Good luck!

Yup the Android Tablet was broken coming straight from the box. The menu screen never turned on once, we believe that they knew this at the time it was given to us. Lucky for us I had researched the company and found that it was not the right thing for us since we didn't have plans on remodeling or building and therefore wouldn't be buying several large ticket items at once. In addition to that I felt that having to go in and look through a bunch of catalogs would be time consuming and tedious. Yuck! All said I knew the sales pitch would be intense but was ready for it. No problem the sales guy was very nice and seemed a little lost for words and unseasoned at my questions and answers. But I guess he got the last laugh by knowingly giving me a broken tablet but you know what they say, "if its too good to be true, it usually is" but all we lost was 90 minutes of our time.

Yes Mike I can confirm. My husband & I wanted to go to learn what direct buy was all about. The sales rep on the phone was very pleasant & told us there was no obligation to buy that day & no obligation to receive our android tablet & restaurant $100 gift card. But when we got there we had someone take us to a table to talk one on one what they were about. we said we wanted to be upfront that we do not make snap decisions on same day in buying anything & right away we felt he was judging us & pretty much told us we would be wasting his time if we did the tour. So thank God we only wasted 3 hrs(driving & time we were in there) rather than the 6 or 7 after the entire tour. But I agree the sales pitch on phone should be upfront so we dnt waste any of our time. The company is very misleading and they do pre judge.

We also found out the same with the "crappy" free gifts. They gave us 2 $100 restaurant cards which were useless and then the tablet we sold as is for $60 in Craigslist saying, "never been used." Needless to say since we never used it the guy who bought it later wanted his money back...we told him sorry but we read the reviews and priced it according to amazons used prices.

I just joined about three months ago and have saved more than I paid for my membership! I just purchased a 92" big screen for our theater room. I priced it everywhere and the lowest price that I could find was $5000. That was the clearance price at Fry's and I paid $2500 at Direct Buy. I also just ordered leather furniture that I saw at a high end furniture store and saved over $3200 for the exact same brand. My entire family is so impressed and are all asking me to order them things, too!
I am not sure why people are saying that they have had any type of bad experience? Kinda shocks me. I highly recommend everyone that likes to save money should join!

I have been a member of Direct Buy for a year and a half and am so thankful! I can't say that I became a member just to save money. My husband and I wanted to be able to afford the higher end items that we couldn't afford to do when the children were younger. We purchased the mattresses that we could never have afforded. The mattresses that we wanted were over $4k and we got the identical mattresses for less than half what the stores were selling them for. We have totally updated all of our flooring and redone our bathrooms. We actually got quotes for our wood floors from three different companies and then went to our Direct Buy club and paid about 40% of our lowest bid! We saved more on our floors than the $6000 that we paid to join!

We joined DB about 15 years ago, back when memberships were just over $1000.  Annual renewals have since climbed from ~$100 to ~150.  In today's on-line market, the overall value of DB membership has declined as I probably make 50% fewer purchases of available items from DB compared to a decade ago.  It is NOT a scam, and our local stores are very well run and responsive by phone, email, and in person.  It is a profitable business, and because they are profitable AND offer very BIG savings on select items I am happy as a member to know that the will stay in business.  The BIG savings that I have direct knowledge of as an analytical shopper and engineer by trade are as follows and are stated as % off best sale or on-line price after tax & fees):  40% off High end or hand crafted furniture (like 100% cherry, no veneers, no assembly required stuff)  50% off Audiophile grade speakers. 30% off Audiophile grade electronics (>$1000 recievers...), 100-300% off mattresses, 30% off kitchen-laundry-outdoor with starting prices of over $1000. 30% off mid-quality (Eureka) tents for our scout troop. Plumbing and lighting fixtures is an area they have become less competitive, unless you are very high end. I have never had a delivery or shipping problem.  Not accounting for poorly run stores in other regions, please ignore all the high drama posts. I still also buy for friends and family who are very greatful.  I agree that the membership cost is only justified if your local store is reputable, and you plan to buy ~$25,000 of good new stuff in the next 2-3 years and you know how to and have a desire do your own research (cross referencing makes and models can be tricky as most chain stores get there own model number, but the specs and patterns match perfectly)

Hi. Cathy, Zinderella, Chris and Bryan speak for me in terms of the experiences I have had with DB.  I saved tens of thousands on my bath and kitchen.  I have 2 more baths to do and expect to continue to save.  Now, I could not get everthing at DB because Lowes did have some less expensive stuff, but wth DB I got upgraded cabinets, granite, and tile which made it worth it.  For me it's not a good value to buy cheap particle board that is not going to last.  I would rather get the solid wood with all the upgrades.  I'm middle class so my husband and I can afford to totally redo one room in our house a year and we still save.  The Club Exclusives are also good for us.  Yes, many of the items are being discontinued but this hasn't caused problems for us.  Its been great.  We got a great washer/dryer for about 50% less than what we had seen in Sears that same holiday weekend (even after the added shipping and handling).

I also agree that if you have to finance you will lose money.  You will feel the savings if you able to make a big purchase initially so that you can make your money back right away.  I can respect those of you who feel that its not worth it.  There have been a number of times when I have wanted to go in and just get something and take it home, but cant becuase of the long wait time or because viewing items in the catalogues doesn't give me enough information.  I never buy if I have not done comparisons. Working with DB requires patience.  The sales reps at my store are also very helpful so I havent had the bad service experiences that some of you have had.  Also, we didn't buy the membership after the initial pitch.  We thought about it and then went back and purchased a membership right before we redid our kitchen.

          Happy New Year, everybody.

As if this board needs another reply ...

My wife and I attended a presentation / open house yesterday in Illinois. When the boring film was over, we were asked to go sit with a rep. I had one question that set me back when I got the answer:

      - If I have a life changing event occur and could no longer make payements to the memebrship, can I cancel? The answer was no.

Tha alone would stop me from joinging a club that has such high dues. They never did divulge what the finance company charges were going to be, and I certainly did noty have the 5K they wanted to join.

The sales rep that was helping us disappeared when we started questioning the true savings. Note that they try to tell you thet the 5K membership fee is good for life, but that is not the case. You have to pay an annual fee from years 4-10 which is currently at 200.00. Add that amount (1,400) to the 5K and you now have a new #. About 5 minutes of just sitting at the table, the owner shows up. He tells us that the girl that was helping us had to go help with some paperwork and he would help us.

This guy was nothing short of arrogant and insulting. We told him we shop for things we need in the discontinued and open box / scrath n dent sections for appliances and such. I really don't mind these items being in this condition since they still have a warranty in most cases. The owner said that if we want to live our lives that way and not purchase new, high end items, than that's fine, but he and his wife only buy the best and not low end junk. I then tried to get them to look up a 70" TV I had just purchased for around 1,700, and he argued with me that looking to see what I could have saved after I already bought the TV was pointless. I tried to explain that it would prove that DB would have saved me $ (or not) by looking this up. By this time we are all standing in the middle of the store, and he is talking very loudly and asked me how much money would I make over the next 10 years. I told him that was none of his business and that it does not relate to the discussion. We went back to the table we started at, and no one ever came back or talked to us.

We also think they plant "members" in the store while giving these tours. the owner asked one guy sitting there how long he had been a member and he said 7-8 years. He then asked the member what he was in the store to buy, and he said fencing. The "member" then went on to say he built his own home and saved a fortune using DB. After we went back to our table, we peeked over his shoulder and he wasn't looking at fencing ot anything that had to do with fences.

After about 5 more minutes, We got up, went to the counter, asked for our gifts ( a tablet and 100.00 dinner card) and left.

What a rude man and terrible experience. We were there almost 2.5 hours. It sucked. Stay clear.

I did play Angry Birds on the tablet last night with my wife!

I've built a house using everything from lighting to kitchen cabinets, appliances, sinks, toilets, hardware, doors, windows, furniture... I've saved well over $150,000 -- solid savings since I always do comparative price shopping. If you don't have a project that would justify the registration fees -- don't join. Really that easy. If you do -- you'll be happy with the quality and selection. Their website connects you with vendor websites so it's easy to identify and comparison shop online for price. Buying through DB won't make sense on everything -- but, on many items it sure does. I've worked through three of their club locations -- and have been happy with each. Home Depot couldn't compete. My floor guy couldn't get the flooring for anywhere near the price. Great lighting a a solid 50% discount. Sorry to all those who have had a bad experience. If you have a bad club location -- consider using their national homeshopping service. I'm a thoughtful shopper -- got it from my parents -- and a happy DB member.

IT IS A SCAM PERIOD!!!DECEPTION AND LIES ABOUND AS THEY OVESTATE THE SAVINGS, but by the time you pay your membership fees of over 3,000.00 and your yearly renewal fees of over 100.00 plus over year after the first 3 years are up! It's just a legal way for these crooks to fleece you and steal from you!!! AN ATTORNEY SHOULD START A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST DIRECT BUY AD THEY BREAK MANY STATE LAWS THROUGH USE OF UNFAIR AND DECEPTIVE TRADE PRACTICES!!!

I've been a member for over 5 years.. I'm sure each store is a little different as far as customer service but the one in Fresno ca is top notch!!! I've saved over 50k over the years. Saved over 13k just on my office and formal dinning furniture. Ya, if your looking for Kmart style crap don't buy into direct buy but if you plan on getting quality stuff you will save. And btw, furniture is marked up 75% by the local stores not 8%. Bottom line great company great savings!!!!!

My sister has been a member for three years and I have tried to help her remodel parts of her home using DB.  I'd like to say Bull Sh*t!  My sister is a 20 year officer's wife who has traveled the world and has some of the most expensive clocks, glassware, porcelain, furniture, etc. on earth.  NONE of it has come from DB!  We could not find items worth buying that were better than you can order through the AAFES catalogs (military store) plus there were shipping and handling charges.  Twenty minutes online and I can beat nearly every price I saw in the DB catalogs and on their website and what I cannot beat wouldn't add up to $5000 in savings.

Direct Buy is horrible! How and Why are these businesses allowed to take peoples money through lies and deceit. I cant believe that I allowed myself to fall for a membership I never used and I cant get out of. Where is the Attorney
      General when you need them?
