We attended their presentation and after some calculation decided to pay for the membership which was $4990. We wanted to update our kitchen and bathroom cabinets, as well as bedroom furniture. We put down about $1000, and the rest was financed through their lender Beta Finance.

A month later we started planning our purchases and realized we were about to pay more by buying through them than we would otherwise. What the don't tell you on their presentation is that while you save about 10% on furniture they add 8 % handling charge in addition to 7% tax, and that doesn't include shipping.

I am now trying to get our membership money back. Do not become a member! Buy from other stores.

    Hi Trudy,

My husband and I want so much to get out of this Direct Buy. How did you do it?
    Thank you very much.

I saw the infomercials on TV and was getting ready to build a house so the wife and I thought it would be a good deal.  We set up an appointment and the night before I just thought I would 'google' DB, and thank god I did!! I have never seen so many negative complaints about one company in my life.  I know you can't make everyone happy, but when I spend four plus hours reading all the negative comments, there's obviously some truth to it.  A friend of mine recently joined, I wish he would have said something before hand and I could have saved him the money and hassle.  BUYER BEWARE!

My husband and I went to their open house tonight. I felt that it was staged. I didn't like the high pressure that you had to decide tonight or you will never be able to join again..glad we didn't join. I feel that everyone here needs to contact the BBB Better Business Bureau...you can list your complaint online. They do try to help....I feel that someone in the group should contact a lawyer and see if everyone can join as a class action...They of course scooted around answering me about shipping charges...things just get delivered to their warehouse...no mention of handling fees...nothing about restock fees either.....personally I'm going to join Sam's Club and Costco...DON'T FORGET THE POWER OF THE PRESS...Please contact your local newspapers & News stations...ask them to send someone in undercover....I feel so bad for all of you....I had to talk my husband out of it....I hope I offered some helpful suggestions...

Wow, am I glad I found your site! I need to replace all our 20+ year old kitchen appliances and was pleased to have a Direct Buy open up near us. Yesterday, I stopped and picked up a brochure. I won't waste my time going back and will warn friends and relatives about this company.
Thanks for all the above comments and regret you all lost so much money and were submitted to so much frustration.

    Wow.

Wish I had read this a year ago before joining.  It is almost exactly our story....we purchase Omega cabinets and had the order completely messed up.  They took our money, committed to a 6-8 week delivery and then "discovered" 12 weeks later that they had "forgotten" to place the order.  In the meantime, we have new construction that is completely delayed and costing us interest and loss rental income in our current residence.

The franchise owner committed to cancelling our membership, reducing the handling fees and refunded us for the items we never received.  After 3 months, I called to hear that he sold the center to corporate and I am starting all over.

Only difference is the Omega cabinets are wonderful....but not worth dealing with DirectBuy.

I will take your advice and backout the Visa charges and call the BBB.

Just spoke with a lawyer ont he phone and he told me that Directbuy has the right to withhold refunding memberships.  He said that that what I described to him is known as buyer's regret.  The best I can do is make the best of my membership and hope that my (yet to be determined) savings will cover the membership cost.

I worked for Direct Buy in Las Vegas, NV for a week. Even the employee's catch on..so, when you can't find anyone that knows anything...it is most likely they are new. They lie, cheat, and steal!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Beware of any company that does not let you come back to sign a contract. It looks good during the presentation and then you are told to sign or you will never be able to come back

We Don't Have To Take It Anymore
I totally agree to be aware of a company that does not let you come back in and sign a contract.  They had the audacity to catch an attitude because we told them that this is a disservice to their customers as well as a disservice to them to tell someone you have to join that day or you can't join at all.  Where was that information in their advertisement?  We told them it's like impulsive buying and I refuse to sign up for something without having the time to think about it.  I don't care if it's $20 dollars.  It's our hard earned money and I'm just not going to give it away.  I look at it as being like American Express you have to have the expenditures up front to pay your bill.  You’re not financing anything through DB, except the membership fee.  You may get the option to make payments.  What if the cost is $10,000?  How many payments will one be allowed to make?

They have been in business for over 35 years but yet they have only hundreds of thousands of customers.  Not customers in the millions, now why is that?  If you are so great and you can save someone so much money, why is your user base not higher?  Probably because of the disservice that one has to sign immediately after the spill of how much someone can save.

Do not let them pressure you into signing anything.  If you have reservations, go with your initial thoughts and feelings.  All in all when you do have time to think about it, you will be happy that you did not sign up without being provided the opportunity to really think about it.

Thanks to everyone who posted a complaint. I have an appointment with Direct Buy tomorrow (1/20/09) and have emailed them and cancelled it. All of you have saved me time and money and I appreciate it!I'll also pass the word on to anyone else who is thinking about joining.

We are in the same boat!!!! I hate direct buy because if the sleepless nights they have caused.  Their staff is incompetent! They never know the answers to our questions and it gets worse the more we get into our kitchen project.  We have saved a lot of money, but is it worth it?  I would NEVER do it again.  We are in California at the Thousand Oaks one.

I have been in sales for over fifteen years, I have sold new & used cars, OEM parts for manufactures, Healcare products also for maufactures, I also started my own distributing business and ran it for 7 years. I feel I'v seen every sales trick.

I visited a W. Mass. location, I did not research this company first hand.

Most of the time I was given a bait and switch, fear, aproach.

My view was: Buying from this company would be a big mistake!
No trust for a company that uses these kind of tricks. A company that wants to grow would never do business this way.

I've been thinking over the past day and I think that in every city where there is a Directbuy located every dissatified member should get together with signage and position themselves close to but not on directbuy property and catch the attention of prospective members on their way to take in a Directbuy invitation and inform them of how Directbuy really is.  While we are at it maybe a few Media outlets might catch wind of the picketing and show up with cameras and reporters to see what all the fuss is about.  Maybe then with some very negative publicity Directbuy may change their view of refunding memberships.

Why are companies like Directbuy continually allowed to operate in the manner that they do. I think that in every city there's a Directbuy we should get as many disatisfied customers together with signage close to but not on Directbuy property and warn prospective "new" customers about how Directbuy operates. Maybe if a lot of noise is made publicly where TV media could be alerted they might rethink their position on refunding memberships

We went to our local DB for a lark, actually my wife dragged me along.  Thank god I was there to talk her out of it.  My wife is a very smart woman...except when it comes to salespeople who talk a big game.  Upon hearing that we couldn't think about this proposal for DB, I walked.

I recently joined DB and finding it very hard to trust them.  They lied to me over and over again.  I went in to get help with a kitchen remodel and the guy that was to help me knew nothing and was just going to send in my drawn up plans that were incomplete.  I thought they helped you out with the design, buy no, thats not their job he told me.  I got so mad, it was ready to shoot fire from my notrils.  Then I over heard a DB associate showing a potentially new customer around and he gave him the same words as did the guy that showed me around, but all of a sudden, he gave this new customer a complete material and labor cost on a display they have set up as a shower with large glass panels, and the cost changed from 2500 to 2000 just like that,  I should go in there and order that shower to have installed and just see what price they come up with then.  Anyway, I am very very unhappy and still do not have a cabinet order.  How can I get in on this class action lawsuit on the lies and deceit that  goes on at DB.  thanks for any info you can give me.  Charli
