Complaint

Country: United States
This person called me yesterday about a bill i do owe.  He asked me about paying $200 a month and i told him i did not have the finances to do that.  When i explained to him that i was not sure what i could pay he began being a complete jerk.  I told him, OK I will explain a little more so maybe you can understand.  I lost my husband to cancer on July 1 and therefore his SS income as well, so you will just have to forgive for now.  By this time i was in tears and i just hung up the phone.   He called right back, i didnt pick up and he left a voice mail that said, Now let me explain something so you understand, you cant use your husband...........   He continues to call back, three times.  i answer the phone then hang it up so he cant leave me anymore messages like that.  He called again this morning and left another message, though it wasnt has bad as the ones before.  I wish i could do something about this unkind person.

    You better make sure..
that you're actually dealing with a debt collector that has a legal right to collect on this alleged debt, and that the amount demanded is correct.  The abusive tactics you describe are illegal.  They violate FDCPA, and debt collectors that routinely violate FDCPA also often show up engaged in fraudulent debt collection.

Since he has contacted you by phone, he has 5 days to send you a letter notifying you of the alleged debt, and of your right to dispute it and demand they send you proof.  If they don't send that letter (which you should get within about 10 days, that's another violation.  Send them a letter disputing the alleged debt, and demanding that they obtain verification of it from the original creditor and mail it to you.  After receiving that letter, they are not allowed to continue collection until the obtain and mail validation.

    Verify before paying anything..
Check whatever they send against your own records.  If they continue to harass you, particularly without sending validation, contact an attorney, since you may be able to sue them for FDCPA violations.  You can find a consumer attorney in your state through www.naca.net

They will sell old accounts trying to get money.
Block those numbers from your phone.
A contract can’t be sold to another debit collector.

I got a call from an alleged rep today, and he couldn't provide copies of the contract I supposedly signed. Since they couldn't provide proof of the debt, I hung up on him. By law they have to furnish you with proof of the debt. Strange how NAM Group is based out of New York, yet the number they used rang as an Idaho number, and they have no license to conduct business in the State of Idaho where I live.

they ask you to verify a social for a reason ... do you see all these comment about this being a scam ... what scam stays on the phone with you  ? every acct has a ssn an dob on it so if they wanted to scam you they have your info anyway its not a scam people just dont wanna pay off there debts .. and will find any excuse not to do so .. an then go to a page like this to file a false complaint .. just pay your bills or atleast be enough of an adult to have a discussion ..

I had a similar situation. Calls kept coming in for someone I didn't know. Figured they'd stop eventually so I just ignored them, until a rather pointed voicemail came through telling me I had to respond by the end of the business day. Called the guy back and he pressed me about the person he was trying to reach. Told him I had no idea who she was and to remove my number from his records. He hasn't called back since.

I should tell you the number was out of NY. The guy who called was Keith Pritchert from the NAM Group and the number was 716-829-1288, but he told me to return my call to 844-760-3230. Area code 844 is not assigned to any specific geographical area. Shady...
