Cancelation Nightmare

I recently moved and are now living far from the nearest LA Fitness center. I stopped by before I moved out to terminate my membership. They told me I need to send them a filled out form by mail. Ridiculous. I printed it our and sent it. A month later I saw I am still being charged. I called them. They said "they have no record of my cancellation". How convenient! I filled the form again and sent it as a certified mail to have the proof of me mailing and them receiving.

The charges continued. I closed my bank account, and now I am getting calls from LA Fitness asking me to update my banking account information. I said I canceled my membership but for some reason it's still open.

I'm currently awaiting a response from the BBB to see if I can get a refund. I cancelled 5 months ago after sending in TWO forms - one for me and one for my children's childcare. They only cancelled my childcare. What? I'm not going to hire an outside babysitter to come to the gym!!!! So it's proof that the system is flawed. I am out more than $100 and this money is needed for my family! I've since sent in ANOTHER cancellation via certified mail for my membership and it has been cancelled...but will I get a refund?

I have had the same cancellation nightmare as everyone else above.  I put my membership on the one-time 3-month freeze, then went online to cancel the freeze, which ends the second week in September.  Today I got an email from this rip-off organization stating I would get one final bill for October, and that this was explained to me when I signed up and in my contract.  It was certainly not explained to me when I signed up and may be buried in their contract, but it's just really BAD BUSINESS to bill someone AFTER they have cancelled their membership for yet another month you won't use.  Like one of the other people (above) stated, All they want is your money!!!  Their equipment is in dire need of repair, and it took on average 3 months for them to fix anything.  While I went there, I complained that the fans on 4 of their treadmills were broken and was told by a supervisor that the fan didn't effect the operation of the machine and wasn't important.  These places should be shut down.

I was also roped into a contract under false pretenses, where I was told that I am getting a "special college student deal", no payments when frozen, and free winter break use all for $50 per month. It sounded too good to be true but when I went to freeze the salesperson told me that never existed. So after a few weeks of complaining I cancelled my credit card. Then I reported them to the BBB. To my surprise the salesperson who had given me the contract was fired and not the manager who was brought in to convince look over the deal. I feel bad but I also suspect that he had done it before otherwise he wouldn't have been fired.

Needless to say I would have given $50 dollars a month for the same membership if I was not misinformed.

Why does the last months payment really mean cancellation fee.

LA Fitness harassed me for three months after I quit! They called me day and night, sent emails and letters. I quit in June, mailed in the cancellation letter as requested and they tried to bill me for two more months. The local manager said he would take care of the problem but never did. I finally called the corporate office at 949-255-7200 to complain. They said that things would be taken care of. We shall see. I would never recommend LA Fitness to anyone!

I am having the same problem which you have faced, in spite of me calling them 15 times for cancellation they still charge me. They said, cancelling the membership is very simple, but it was not, I went online and had to print out a form and send it to headquarters. I went to gym to cancel my membership personally, they told they have no access to cancel my membership as they said me to do the online process of cancelling my membership. This is what I am still dragging, its around 800 dollars which went from account and still going on and its not stopping... charging is still going on... I don't have anybody's phone numbers nor anyone's email address for complaints. I think they are least bothered about getting their names in Better Business Bureau, when I talked to an agent, they spoke harshly saying that nothing can happen... and I need to pay in full membership amount... this is a small portion of what I have experienced.

    Household Money Manager
My son and husband joined LA Fitness in Norwalk CT with the agreement that when my son went back to college they would suspend his membership.  He told them he wanted to freeze his membership and we have been getting billed ever since.  When I called they said I needed a cancellation confirmation.  I talked to the same guy every month since and I am still getting charged.  They reversed the first two months and apologized after we got pretty upset and now I am still getting charged.  Get everything in writing and check your bill every month.  This place is a money machine and thats all they care about.

I know what you mean. Almost the same thing happened to me last week. they tried to trick me into buying training services when i specifically told them that i just wanted to workout on the machines. treated me like scum, offended me and threatened me. I was in tears by the time i left. I called headquarters and had to cancel membership. The local center would not even speak to me on the phone.

LA Fitness is a rip off, I canceled my membership and am still getting charged on my credit card! The manager in Federal Way WA was so incredibly rude, and lied saying they've been calling and leaving messages. They also lied to get me to sign up saying I could cancel at any time (didn't mention there would be a 50% buy out fee). I never received any missed calls or voice mails from them when they said they've left them. And the only way I can cancel is by change of address form but in the meantime while I wait for that confirmation they are still able to withdraw from my account. The manager says "It's so simple to cancel" well clearly not! I went in once already they photocopied my license because I moved, and then they are still charging my account, and denied the proof of my license as my address change! They are a horrible company, they should go out of business for the way they run their company and their unbinding policies and contracts! They are abusing what should be a good thing and turning it into a nightmare!

    Another LA Fitness Victim.

I have been through what everyone else here has - this company are bunch of crooks and just in the business of extorting money, nothing more. The personal Trainers are a joke - they're all extortion agents, nothing more.

LA Fitness in Studio City has over charged me almost $2000 for personal training. I have a contract that states I'll only be charged for two extra payments. When I asked that I be reimbursed, Yeva Mambreyan the supposed manager, blamed me for the problem of their overbilling. She even smiled as she said it. When I started to become upset, she then offered to take off one payment out of the four fraudulent payments. That was only offered after I became upset. I was humiliated and shuffled from person to person and made to wait as they laughed and hung out in another cubicle. I'm sure they were hoping I would just get fed up and walk away. Again, I have a contract stating otherwise. But the fact that she was smiling the whole time and telling me it was my fault is just crazy!!!

I am having the same problems. My husband and I signed up for LA Fitness and were pretty pumped about doing the personal training but literally two weeks after signing up we found out that I was pregnant. It was not a planned pregnancy and we quickly realized that we were not going to be able to afford the 300+ a month personal training sessions.
When we went to the center where we signed up the man named Chris would not even come out into the lobby to speak to us. Another trained named Ali finally gave us the corporate number. I called and explained the situation. The representative told me that I needed a doctors notice and that they could only freeze the account for a month for 15 dollars! I was shocked and offended that I would have to go and get a doctors excuse simply to cancel a personal training session!
Sadly, I miscarried the baby in the first trimester and believe when I say the last thing on my mind was some stupid gym. I just called today to settle the account and was treated very rudely and basically doubted that I was ever pregnant in the first place. Needless to say, I am fuming. I now have to go to my doctors office and have them write a letter to the company saying that I was pregnant but lost the baby. I feel humiliated that I had to tell my personal information and beyond upset that something that should have been easy is now turning into an ordeal.
Of course, I can find no form to file a complaint but when I DO send the doctors note in I am going to write a VERY strongly worded letter to accompany my doctors excuse. I am literally trembling with anger right now.

Same issue.  I was being charged nonthly for membership.  The expiration date of card came up.  Then I was blastd by 50-60 calls a day from every LA Fintess on the planet trying to get the commission for updating my info.  When I spoke to someone, they told me there was a $25 fee for updating the info.  I said at that point to forget it.  $25 to udpate my expiration date?????  Now, two months later, I get an email saying thank you for the updated info.  FRUAD.  I called corp office and was able to track down what employee did this.  His name is Rafael Andrade.  They wouldnt tell me where he worked but did confirm he is somewhere in CA. Although the amount was minimal, I am looking to file a crimanal complaint against LA Fitness and Rafael Andrade.

...Now there's a young lady who acts as a front desk manager named Jenny Ryan.

Miss Ryan has inappropriately smacked my rear end, followed me in the ladies room to stare at me through the mirror. placed herself within earshot's distance to listen in on conversations I have with fellow clients, and stood behind me just to stand there. She has also told another staff member not to speak to me. I'm being harassed by this woman and am not the only member who's been experiencing inappropriate behavior from her. She has admittedly had sexual relations with another staff member (manager) within only four hours of meeting him and is very sexually explicit in her "recruiting techniques". She has openly admitted to being a former Las Vegas *** and her "resume" looks more like a rap sheet. Various client talk among themselves about various things she's said and done concerning them, myself, and or others. She's completely unprofessional and this behavior needs to be stopped for the well being of the clients and miss Ryan. Thank You

I agree. When I signed up I was going to be able to get the 3 free training sessions but after the consultation I never got any of them. The reason was I didn't sign up for a year of training which is 7 thousand. Also when I tried to cancel over and over they said the paperwork never went through. I had to cancel my credit card to get away from them. They ruined my first gym experience.

I joined LA fitness on a weekly basis since I was out of town for work.  I joined for two weeks on May 31, 2012 and went into the club on June 14, 2012 to cancel.  The person said my membership is canceled and I should receive an email.  I didn't receive an email.  She also gave me a cancelation form to mail, and told me to mail it when I got back to California (I was in NJ at the time).  So I did.  I mailed it on June 16, 2012 and noticed I was still getting charges through June 28.  I called the corporate office and refund it and they said there is no record of me canceling my membership at the club so there's nothing he can do.  When I asked if I could contact the person I signed up with to acknowledged I canceled on June 14, he said I could get the refund.  Sure enough, I called and the person no longer works there.

I think LA fitness purposely does their membership cancelation through mail so they can charge people additional weeks/months and get away with it.  Unethical.
