Digital Star unauthorized charge

Complaint

Country: United States
A preauthorization for $74.95 from Digital Star with a bad phone number (208-123-7377) showed up on my debit card account 1/29/12.  Called bank fraud department and had the account killed immediately.  They stopped the charge since it had not completed.  Do not know who Digital Star is or what the charge was for.  I use the card for online purchases mainly through Amazon.  No purchases in the last 30 dqays.  However, I placed orders in the last 60 days from a company called Turncraft (woodworking plans), Personal Creations, and Entirely Pets. I wonder what companies others have used recently.

Just called BB&T re: $74.95 Digital Star credit card charge and $2.25 Foreign Transaction Fee on a statement received today. Card is now blocked and they are sending a new one.I told customer service that I found all of these complaints online but she did not seem interested in that information.

And that is exactly why this continues, after almost 3 weeks.

The merchant account is being run for purposes of funnelling fraudulent charges, and as long as the increasing fraud levels stay ahead of the chargeback fees from consumer fraud disputes, the sleeping bank or payment processor apparently just keeps helpfully stealing the money.

Most of the earlier complaints appear to be from people who noticed the fraudulent charges via online statements or missing money in checking accounts.  As you have experienced, we will now start to see people who catch the charges on statements, since we are approaching the 1 month point from when this started.

On Feb 15 I received a call from an 800 number that I did not recognize, so I did not answer. After googling the number I found that it was the Chase fraud prevention and that it was a legit number. Next thing I went online to check my Chase account and one of my Chase credit cards had a $149.99 pending charge from Digital Star with a date of Feb 15 (same day).

I called the Chase Fraud Prevention number and after going through their little questionnaire, the CSR said not to worry, that I will not be liable for anything. I was not worried to begin with. That's why I use credit cards and not debit cards. They closed that account and are sending a new card.

I have to say that Chase seems to be very proactive about these charges and did not try to give me the runaround.
It looks like these charges started a few weeks back. Needless to say, I hope they catch those behind them.

From Orlando here. Checked my online statement and noticed a Digital Star charge for 149.99. I was confused and called my bank (Wells Fargo), told them it was fraudulent and that I'd get a call from their dept. in 3-5 business days. I cancelled my card in the meantime.  I have not used Amazon recently, but I have used Paypal and Stubhub with it. I'm hoping these concerns will get the banks to respond to these attacks. This is beyond ridiculous.

      Shut off your debit card.
      Do NOT have it reissued.
Use only credit cards for online or retail purchases.
Get an ATM card with PIN if you must.

This happened to me, the charge is from 2/11/12 for $149.99.
Wells Fargo canceled my card and is looking into it.

Here is what my online banking showed:

DEBIT CRD PURCHASE 02/11 Digital Star +44208123 +442081237377 GB $149.99

    Has to be a scam.

I order my textbooks for college from Amazon.com; but, I pay through PayPal not Amazon.  I don't know if that makes a difference. I also made purchases in January from Amazon, but thankfully have not seen any charges on my bill.  A friend of mine had this happen and immediately e-mailed everyone in their e-mail address book to make them aware of the scam. So, I have been monitoring my account for any fraudulent charges.

Just been called by my bank about this load of fraudsters.  A charge of GBP 45 had gone on the card but had been declined.  I also have bought items from Amazon recently.  The bank have refused the charge and are sending me a new card.  Well done bank!

I should mention there was also an ATT SERVICE charge of $1 on my debit card and the DIGITAL STAR $149.99 charge.

Chase's fraud department called me and I definitely did not remember charging anything toward a "theatrical production" company.

I was very happy with Chase spotting this problem before I did - but it is still unnerving!

        "ATT SERVICE charge of $1"
        You caught a "ping".

Two other complaints reported seeing ping charges preceeding the larger fraudulent charges.
Other pings have been reported to be through Amazon, and Speedway.

These crooks appear to have mapped out a bunch of sites that are vulnerable to being used to "test" credit card numbers and expiration dates.  It appears that they then use this card information to run the fraudulent charges through this abandoned "digital star" account.

I've contacted Amazon.  As you might expect they're confident that their site is secure and my details have not been compromised etc.  They say they are going to look into it although I'm not sure exactly what they can do.

They could simply require that all card purchases require a CCV.

That would remove their site from usefulness as a "pinging" site.

Same thing happened to me with a $149.99 charge on boa credit card on 2/16/2012. It was Digital Star. Only two online places that I used card was Amazon and PSN (play station network). I figured it was PSN due to I purchased games online straight through new sony vita console for the first time.  Plus knowing that games and movies are being purchased constantly through play station using an account linked to either debit or credit card. Most people especially children order these not even thinking about the card linked to the account. I have been reading all the complaints and info and I don't think it's making purchases online. Some people haven't even used the card that was compromised online at all. Has been either debit or credit cards several different banks and some cards used online some not. Amazon started out being the common thread because it is the biggest online retailer. From all the info that I have read it has to be somebody running card numbers and expiration dates until they find a match. Probably computerized system.

Just noticed this Digital Star charge on my debit card account for $74.95.  Had to block card and will be getting new one.  Unfortunately, it is a hjoliday weekend, so no progress on this until Tuesday.  :(  I am in FL so I guess it is everywhere.  Used Amazon.com in January, but charge just showed up today.
