Refund Check
Complaint
Diane Glinka
Country: United States
I do not have a harassment complaint. I paid my debt of which was with Pay-Pal. I get this refund check back from Portfolio Recovery Associates. I called Portfolio and they said it was and adjustment check from Pay-Pal. I can't get any more information on why they sent this amount back to me as a refund. I have called Pay-Pal, Portfolio and have talked to about 16 idiots at Pay-Pal. They can't give me any information because it was an old Master Card Account that I no longer have and cancelled. I just want to know if it is safe to cash this check. Lord help me!

As it is uncommon for collection agencies to refund payments, even when they should, without prodding, let's assume PRA had a reason to do so, such as some sort of prodding, that would lead them to review their records for "errors".
For example, here is a settlement with the NY AG.

Was the alleged debt to Pay-Pal from an amount you were supposed to pay via a link to the closed MasterCard account?
Did you pay the Pay-Pal amount to PRA?
Did PRA refund all of it, or only part of it?
When you originally paid this alleged debt, did you believe it was actually owed, or did you just have no records to prove otherwise?
Did PRA ever send any letter regarding the alleged debt?
Did PRA ever send any proof of the alleged debt?
Did PRA engage in any deceptive or illegal collection tactics as part of collecting on this alleged debt?
Did they stonewall you in your attempts to dispute or obtain proof of the alleged debt?
Was the alleged debt past SOL in your state?
Was that state NY?
