Complaint

We attended their presentation and after some calculation decided to pay for the membership which was $4990. We wanted to update our kitchen and bathroom cabinets, as well as bedroom furniture. We put down about $1000, and the rest was financed through their lender Beta Finance.

A month later we started planning our purchases and realized we were about to pay more by buying through them than we would otherwise. What the don't tell you on their presentation is that while you save about 10% on furniture they add 8 % handling charge in addition to 7% tax, and that doesn't include shipping.

I am now trying to get our membership money back. Do not become a member! Buy from other stores.

Obviously you are a franchise owner or from corporate. Ask any of us if we EVER found a better deal with DirectBuy. Believe me, we tried really, really hard. Nothing but nightmares and after finding this site, I know that we are not alone. Horrible customer service, defective merchandise, higher prices & high shipping/handling fees to their facility to name just a few problems we've experienced. If you don't have a complaint, perhaps you shouldn't be lurking on a complaint site.

    Hi Darlene-
Sorry to hear you have joined our regret club. The BBB has been "bought off" by DirectBuy, so you won't get any help there. Many of the franchise owners have paid to get memberships with the BBB. What I would suggest is going back to your credit card company to get the refund from them. They should go and fight DB on your behalf. Also, keep really good records of your paperwork. Read through this site, especially posts from Trudy. She has helped many people through the process and has been successful in helping people get their money back. We need to stick together and continue the fight. DirectBuy will not continue to get away with ripping us off. Please let us know how your case is progressing and remember to warn as many people as you can to stay away from DirectBuy.

Yes, I believe we're going about this the right way. Making trouble will only get you into trouble and really, DB isn't worth more heartache. I believe we will get our day in court and will be refunded. They can't continue to get away with this. They are scum and need to be punished for ripping off the community. It's just a matter of time. Continue to warn others to stay away from DB!

It's obvious whenever people have "positive" reviews for DB, they are somehow related to the company. I have yet to find a person who really loves what they have purchased / received from DB. If you don't have a complaint, please stay off of this site.

    HI ALPHIE
YOU HAVE BEEN ON THIS SITE LONG ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT

EVERY SINGLE TACTIC THAT DB USES   ISSSSSSSSSSSS   CRIMINAL!!!!!!
JUST BECAUSE IT IS DONE SLIGHTLY SUBTLY UNTIL THEY GET YOU IN THEIR TRAP,
DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT IS NOT CRIMINAL

IT IS VS. ALL CONSUMER PROTECTION ACTS
&   UNFAIR & DECEPTIVE TRADE PRACTICE ACTS

    HIGH PRESSURE TACTICS
    UNDUE PRESSURE
VERBAL LIES THAT THEY WOULD NOT DARE TO PUT IN WRITING
PROMISES OF EXCESS SAVINGS THAT DO NOT EXIST
NO COOLING-OFF PERIOD is vs. the law, because the contract forces you to give up your rights as a consumer, to make a complaint

Contract is written one-sided, in favour of db
No opportunity to view catalogues (out-dated, out of stock & disc. items,
there is no notice required by db to let you know that something is disc.,
until 3 to 6 weeks after you order
    damaged merch., promised as new
no mention in contract, of excessive hidden ship/handle fees,
& you have to take time & money to arrange to travel to the warehouse to
    pick-up items,
& you have to hire a private company to have large items delivered,
when you recieve your merch. they refuse to take responsibility if damaged,
    or it does not work
db has refused to honour extended warranties from the manufacturer
THEY ADD ON A HIGH-PRESSURE LOAN, THAT MOST PEOPLE WOULD NOT QUALIFY FOR,
IF DB DECIDED TO USE THE LEGAL PROCESS OF PROPER QUALIFYING PROCEDURES,
TAKE $$$$$$ from unemployed, blind & disabled people,
one- income  & do not ask for proof of income..............

    I

LAWYERS ARE SUING BECAUSE OF THE
MILLIONS OF $$$$ OF HIDDEN REBATES THAT THEY POCKET,
INSTEAD OF PASSING ON TO THE CUSTOMER

Hello to all our moral supporters here;  HOORAY for more disgruntled, misled members of DB relaying their TRUE stories on this site.
There IS strength in numbers.  It shows we CAN retrieve what was lost. DB is subtle and elusively cunning....

Did ya'll read the CtheGood posts (written above on this pg) which said 'buy from them instead of getting mad'? (DB POSITIVE)
Basically, just cave in and use the blasted membership which is bought & paid for.
THEN the very next post was from CtheStoopid which WAS stupid and didn't make an ounce of sense!

The oncoming post was cleverly written again by 'CtheGood' relaying (NEGATIVE) remarks about DB! Flipflopped altogether.  So, yes Trudy & Roger, now we see how DB posts to mess with our heads.  That was deviously posted by them!  But now we can't be fooled.  Wonder how much that poster person (DB offshoot) earns by writing that kind of crap for DB? Just a job, 'spose.  Someone's gonna get fired!
How clever and manipulative are the DB tactics utilized through their company!
ONE MORE FACT... no HE DID NOT ask for verified proof of our income before signing up.  He flippantly & smoothly asked if we had about 40 grand between the two of us, annually.  We fell for the Silver.... and we fell hard.  I'm still reeling...

Thanks again, so SOOOOOOO much for all the support on this site. !!!!!!!!.  [planning M.O. for legit route -attack- against DB (to recoup) -directed at! the owner].

I live in GA and joined Jan 2009... I just paid in full and I called DB and told them I want to cancel my membership and the keeps trying to convince me to stay a member. I saw in the contract that they would give me some interest back. If I can get all my money back that woulb be even better. I never purchased anything but, I did use the DB Sherwin Williams card. Even using the Sherwin Williams discount card from DB i still dont get a good deal campared to just going to home depot. Help me please!!!

You're not alone Ohio, we fell Sept'09.  There are class action suits ongoing.
We've bought two items.  DB didn't save us nothing.  We're remodeling some in 'this 'old house' and it sure wasn't worth 5 grand+ to 'join' their exclusive Club.'  DB is kaching, kaching, kaching only for their pockets.  Home Depot, Lowe's, other contractors, companies, Sears, online buying; they're all the same or better than DB's prices because you can limit S&H and look for items on sale.  Shoot, we do scratch and dent, estate and yard sales.  We're usually frugal but duped (doped) into their sales pitch during a fit of insanity.  Common sense didn't play out that day.  Impulse spending..

Go back and dig through the posts.  Trudy's (who is Canadian, I believe)
and Roger's (USA)pretty sure; they've given us great info & incentive to pursue membership refunds.  But it ain't easy! Stay strong and get going.

    (I feel your pain.)
    The most recent posts are on these last pages.  Up to pg 88!  The positive remarks (posts) most likely are posted from DB affliates.  So stick it out and keep us apprised. I'm working on it too.  :-}

I took me almost six months, but I did get a full refund on my membership and that was after I purchased a couple of items.  I found them cheaper at other retail locations and was able to prove my point, along with the fact that Direct Buy does not disclose accurate information in their initial presentation and does not have all the resources that it claims it has compared to retail stores.  It took a lot of work and phone calls to corporate and working with the owner of the location where I purchased.  I had to threaten to make the claim public and file a lawsuit, which I was totally prepared to do if they did not make the situation right.  Initially, they offered me a partial refund, but finally agreed to refund the entire amount.  It was not effortless, believe me when I tell you that.  But I have a feeling that the more people who complain and make their claims known, the more DB will have to fess up to their mess.  Bottom line is they are not meeting the terms of their agreement with you.

as mentioned in the way back archives, filing a small claims suit, for under 100$ in filing fees, makes the db owners very very nervous. you are already stung for many thousands of dollars so whats another c note.

    alphie
if your initial request for a refund of dues paid [a request backed with trudys suggestions of documentation] is met with hostlity or negatively file a small claims, what have you to lose, chances of getting a refund increase greatly when you are showing you are not going to roll over.

Thx A - a sm claims suit may be the route to go.  You're rt, what's another hundred plus to recoup the thousands DB embezzled.
