We attended their presentation and after some calculation decided to pay for the membership which was $4990. We wanted to update our kitchen and bathroom cabinets, as well as bedroom furniture. We put down about $1000, and the rest was financed through their lender Beta Finance.

A month later we started planning our purchases and realized we were about to pay more by buying through them than we would otherwise. What the don't tell you on their presentation is that while you save about 10% on furniture they add 8 % handling charge in addition to 7% tax, and that doesn't include shipping.

I am now trying to get our membership money back. Do not become a member! Buy from other stores.

'cgy1998' different states have different laws.  My next planned step is to contact a lawyer.  If we live in the same state, I may as well save my money -- what state has "buyer's regret?

Did the BBB provide you with any help?  I just sent a letter to BBB of Merrillville, IN because that is where DB corporate office is.  All they did was contact DB where I joined and the manager admitted I brought in a few items where I could get better prices, but promised BBB that he would get me a good deal on kitchen cabinets.  After finding this site and reading all the problems people have had with cabinets from DB, I do not think so.  I sent another letter to BBB in IN and refused offer.  Do you know if this c/o will stay in the BBB file in Merrillville or get tossed?

BBB, I have filled my c/o with the BBB.  The manager here admits I brought in items with the same model which could be purchased cheaper elsewhere and offers for settlement my right to purchase kitchen cabinets at a hudge savings.  After reading comments on this site, I am afraid to try and order anything.  I sent another letter to the BBB refusing offer to purchase kitchen cabinets at a hudge savings.  Waiting to hear back for BBB.  My question is what does BBB do with these c/o if not resolved ?

Judy, I am responding to the note to you from trudy.  I would also like to know if you got your money back.  I have taken trudy's advice and have sent the necessary registered letters to DB.  It would help me to know if this worked for you ???

    Hi Rita
I suggest waiting at least a month after sending the reg'd letter
But I found some info that I hope will help
Google:    SOUTH CAROLINA CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT
    Title:     SDDCA HOME PAGE...complaint services
see...complaints (left column)  great info on how to file a complaint with Consumer Affairs
you can actually speak to someone who should be able to help you
Ask if they have any complaints against DB...it would be very interesting to know if they would give you that kind of info

Let me know if this helps     Good Luck

    Trudy, thanks will do.
Registered letters were sent on the 8th of June to both the two co-owners of this store and to the coporate office.  Thus far no reply from either place.  Did you see my reply regarding the BBB attempt at solution?

Timmy...wow...what a superior name, and your grammar and spelling is far better than anything I have ever seen outside of the 5th grade. It's a shame that you can't even spell 'stupid' right. I guess it's true that anyone can get through school, let alone master a 'high school shop class'. I bet you have some superior products in your house all made by hand. For your information...A 'Members Only' club means....guess what? Anyone? Anyone? Timmy? It has a *gasp* Membership FEE! Novel concept, isn't it? You are one of the people who would be turned away at the door, and good riddance to you, too. Take your 'valuable time' back to your 'high school shop class' and learn to spell 'stupid' while you're at it.
Is it any wonder that I hate 99.8% of all humanity?

    Timmy-
I find it extremely offensive that you feel the need to lash out and belittle others who have been victimized. If you found these comments helpful, a simple note of appreciation would have sufficed. To make judgements against the people who prevented you from going to DirectBuy is mean and uncalled for. If you don't have anything nice to say, please keep it to yourself.

    Hi Trudy,
Thank you for the information you are providing everyone. I am in Ottawa ON and just recently got suck into a mbrship with Direct Buy on the 13th Jun 09. I went in person today, 15 Jun 09 to speak to the owner, but she wasnt in until 4:00, spoke to the other person in charge and he was suppose to get back to me. In the mean time as you directed, I have filed a registered letter to them requesting my money back under the Canadian Consumer Protection Act. The letter will take 2 days to get there. I've gone as far as calling the Better Business Bureau and was shocked to find out that they have an A+ rating. Do I give them time to respond or do I follow up with another registered letter. I have not used their services at all and don't want to, so I can only quote the undue stress of pressure signing. Anymore advice and directions are greatly appreciated.

We are suppose to be attending an orientation session or whatever to learn how to fillout all the paperwork 17 Jun, but I intend on calling and cancelling that. Anymore advice and directions are greatly appreciated.

    Hi Dawn
I am really happy that you acted so quickly and you have a really excellent chance of getting your $$$ back.  You definitely have the upper hand because you have tons of options as long as you continue to follow-up with every step & keep accurate copies in order.
I SUGGEST WAITING 3 TO 4 WEEKS (to make sure that your letter has not been sent back to you unopened)

Send a follow-up fax: (another reg'd is not necessary, so you can save your $)
    INC. Date you joined
Date that you returned and hoped to speak to the owner in person, who was not in at the time

INC. the fact that you "visited the location within 48 hours of joining", because you realized that you had been "under undue pressure to sign"
THE HIGH PRESSURE TACTICS USED ARE "CONTRARY TO THE CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT OF ONTARIO" (you had stated "Canadian...CPA" but don't worry about that, as long as you make sure that you  use "ONTARIO"
(repeating that issue is a good idea because that is the reason why you want to cancel so quickly.)
Name of person you spoke to
Date that you sent the reg'd letter
Inc. the fact that you have cancelled the orientation that was scheduled on June 17, 2009, due to the fact that you have already started the process of cancelling your membership.
Ask for the contract to be
"RESCINDED" (this means that the contract never existed) and to PLEASE refund your money in full.
State the fact that any responses MUST be in writing.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: NEVER NEVER NEVER GO BACK THERE TO TALK IN PERSON
DO NOT RESPOND TO ANY PHONE CALLS OR E-MAILS
WHILE YOU ARE WAITING: GOOGLE "CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT"
FIND a copy of the ACT and read Part III Unfair practice 15. (2)  (h)
                              also          cancellation info (rescision)
ALSO find cpa there is a gov't of ON site-tells you what to do before you file a complaint and call
CPA BRANCH INFO:  pHONE 1-800-889-9768  order the forms to file a complaint with them... so you will be ready if db does not co-operate
Don't give up ...keep us posted

    Hi Chantal
Waiting a year is a lot more difficult but always worth a try
Where do you live and do you live common-law with your boyfriend?
Did you both sign the contract and who is the main signer, who is the co-applicant and are your last names & address diff't on the contract or the same?
Does the contract state: married?  or just refer to him as your spouse, or both?
Hope I can help...let me know

    Hi to everyone
I have changed my mind about the class-action suit, if you live in the States it is a good idea, especially if you have joined a long time ago...but no matter what you do, you should try to contact db by reg'd mail so they will at least know that you are unhappy...but, do some research and get your facts & dates in order...let them know if you were unable to use the membership and why
Roger has alot of info in this site about the suit inc. names and phone numbers of the law office
