We attended their presentation and after some calculation decided to pay for the membership which was $4990. We wanted to update our kitchen and bathroom cabinets, as well as bedroom furniture. We put down about $1000, and the rest was financed through their lender Beta Finance.

A month later we started planning our purchases and realized we were about to pay more by buying through them than we would otherwise. What the don't tell you on their presentation is that while you save about 10% on furniture they add 8 % handling charge in addition to 7% tax, and that doesn't include shipping.

I am now trying to get our membership money back. Do not become a member! Buy from other stores.

We been member since 2008, we only had all new appliances, (we did saben obey there) then I had some living room set twice ( save agan) my only complain will be that it is true you save like maybe 5% after all and you they will not even deliver the stuff at your house, ( you got to pay) and in top of that it takes months. Tax, s&h. Will be the amount of money you paying for the purchase  for example ( sofa is let say $5 then s&h will be $3 and tax $2) I feel like with the amount on s&h + tax I could've got a second sofa. But it is true to me is like the total you pay at direct buy will still be less then the amount I would pay at the furniture store. Oh another thing I find wierd is that everything I get from direct buy its wrong colors, or is some damage to it. I think the manufacturer send whats a little damage and since it a [***] to send it back most people like me just keep them. This will be my last year as a member I'm really fed up with the long waiting, wrong orders, damage furnature , and sabe me a headache searching in there web which most of the things I want I have to go to there office. Becouse you can order online! Screw that.

We just joined DB a few months ago in anticipation of buying a house. We are planning to go slow in updating / remodeling and are just starting.

Are there savings? So far that seems to be the case.
Are they what's advertised or what someone always seems to comment on these type of threads? Not even close.

Is it worth it? Jury's still out on that.

We do not blindly shop at DB. For certain things (e.g. appliances) we first do lots of research and settle on a handful of models. We then see if DB carries the brands. If not, then we see if what DB carries would be an acceptable choice. For other things (e.g. furniture) we don't rely on reviews as much. We first decide what characteristics we want and then look at the brands that DB offers.

Once we have an idea of what we want we find the best possible price online and get a DB quote (we email / call and do not go to the showroom much) which includes handling (if any), freight, taxes and any other costs.

So far, we have bought three things:
    1. Dishwasher
DB did not carry the preferred brand.
Washers with similar performance ratings were 2.5 to 4 times as expensive as what we wanted so we bought that online at lowes.

    2. Garbage disposal
DB price (including shipping, taxes, etc.) was about 8% cheaper than the absolute cheapest price we could find online. DB paperwork said it would ship on April 9th. It was at our house yesterday.

    3. Twin over Full Wooden Bunk Bed
DB pice (including shipping - $300, taxes and 8% handling) was about 16% cheaper than the cheapest online store we could find.
Interesting note: The most typical price for this bed online was 240% of the total DB price. You cloud really think you are getting great savings depending on how you "price shop". =)

So we have saved about 5% of the membership price with our first 3 purchases and the savings have been around 15% of the absolute lowest price we could find anywhere.

We'll see how it goes as we purchase other items.

So far, however, I think the savings are pretty modest. I did not have unreasonable expectations. I expected 20-30 % savings. I am getting about half of that. I think I'll recoup my costs and eventually come out ahead but it will take much longer than I anticipated...

I suspect that online shopping has really diminished DB's discounts. I think DB should stop charging handling fees (or they should cap them). That would really help their service become more appealing.

One last comment: Would I sign up if I had to do it over again? Right now I am thinking that I would not. Not because I do not think that I will get my money back. Rather because I will get it back far too slowly and then reap somewhat marginal benefit from the membership.

One last note: People out there posting about much greater savings vs what I mentioned above or posting about saving 5 figures on your kitchen or saving 6 figures on your house. You all should know that no-one believes you.

Just went to an open house last night on my "VIP pass". It appears as though this is not a scam although it does feel a bit scammy in how they try to close you - similar to buying a car at some dealers.

If what I was told by the DB personnel is true then this seems like a very useful service that would definitely pay for itself. However, that is the problem. How can I verify whether it is true without making a $5000 commitment?

Since my wife and I have a policy of sleeping on any financial proposition before making a decision, we were not able to proceed with DB. As soon as I pointed this policy out to our closer, he lost interest in us, handed us our prizes and said good night.

If you are doing this for the "Android Tablet", don't bother. The thing is a waste of plastic. Although it "works", it is more like a toy and is not usable. You can buy much better tablets for $35. The Restaurant.com card appears to be legit.

Once they know you will not pay them $5,000 without time to ponder on it - they know they've lost their advantage...

The franchisers are in it for the membership fees which is why they tell you it's now or never... Talk about a high pressure sales tactic...  worst mistake we've ever made. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
We were gullible to pay them without a day to think it over..
BTW = Our franchiser is out of DB & looking for work... hummmm  Hopefully he's learned he can't fool all of the people all of the time... hope he enjoys eating his can of beans & fish sticks.

Haha..  this is funny. I am a membership director for Direct buy. First of all, we are not rude nor are we over the top pushy. Now, Direct Buy isn't for everybody and if you are sitting across from me telling me that you can barely afford to put food on the table, I'll escort you out no problem with your FREE GIFTS.  (Everyone gets their gifts BTW). However, if you're telling me that you have plans to buy then yeah, I will do what I have to do to get you to see the light; which includes showing you plenty of prices. We are forced by the manufacturers to enforce a one time visit option to protect their lucrative relationships with retailers. However, if you show up six months down the road ready to join because you found out your neighbors saved $30,000 in ten years, we'll let you.I will say that 90% of our members never save a dime. They still spend just as money as they originally planned to spend in retail; they just buy much nicer products at half the price. That's their prerogative, though and that's human nature. I have been with the company for a long time and could put a plethora of real member testimonies in front of you raving about their experience. Sp basihing a company that has been around for 42 years for a reason and is registered with the BBB; all because you're too broke to ever be able to reap the benefits of membership because you're too broke to buy anything. Its not my fault you failed at your attempt to succeed in life.

You said it Lonnie -  the Franchisers are just trying to get rich and they don't care who they rip off - whether you can afford five or six grand or not... I hope they all go out of business in this internet age... Who needs them?

I'm in agreement. The sales guy we encountered in an AZ store was fantastic and very down to earth. We had heard of DB about six years ago from a friend, so we knew it wasn't a flash-in-the-pan business. What amuses me are these pissed off people saying "I can't wait until they go out of business", haha. That will never happen. The package we bought was the Internet membership, with the intention of upgrading to Gold in about a year, and I believe that is the best option for people who want to save money but are not ready to commit to the $5grand until they realize just how much they can have. The same people who are spending their time griping here are the same people who think every good thing comes as a handout. Here's our situation, and why we decided to buy: our entire living room set needs to be replaced, we don't have one full set of bedroom furniture in any of our rooms, our kitchen table/chairs are beat and no longer worth a dime, our pots & pans are hand-me-downs from about 12 years ago, and on and on -- in a nutshell, we are on a clean slate and ready to put a bunch of new stuff in our house -- but are too stubborn to pay almost 50% in mark-ups at a retail store. As well, we plan to buy a house in a couple of years, that we look forward to customizing however we wish. It's the perfect time for a family in this situation, as long as you can afford it over time. No regrets, and I look forward to sending my friends and co-workers there.

no membership = no gifts replies to Direct Buy Employee
after spending 90 minutes for the presentation and then refusing to join, I was told they were out of the gifts and that it would be mailed in 1 week. One week later I called only to be told that it could be 1 to 2 more weeks. Well it has been a month and no gift. I guess I made the right decision, if they can't provide something that was promised in one months time how can they provide any product. My guess is that they do not have a good relationship with some of their suppliers. The gift was to be an Android Touch Pad, maybe DB should check Amazon or NewEgg just to mention a few well known suppliers for a supply.

We love Direct Buy and have already saved more than what we paid to join ($5000).   We ripped out our builder quality kitchen and installed a brand new custom kitchen.  To upgrade throught he builder we would have spent $7000 to get it close to our liking -  we ending up spending $9000 (taxes freight and all) through Direcy Buy for something we really liked and then reused the builders kitchen to create a nice laundry room.   The same kitchen cabinets (same vendor and all) were quoted by home depot for 11 000 PLUS TAX.     All the furniture in our house is quality stuff for moderate pricing (better than you can find in retail stores or online - I compare EVERY TIME) and AWESOME discounts on appliances.  Yes you pay s&h and freight .. but it still works out to be better pricing than you can find elsewere so you learn to suck it up and continue to save.
If you dont have similar needs .. then dont join! SIMPLE!

I agree with you as well. The people who are spending their days GRIPING about DB are the ones who actually go through life thinking you can get something for nothing, every time. If a person, or family, has a significant amount of things to purchase (like we do) and the only thing stopping us from purchasing for years has been our stubbornness toward insane mark-ups, then spending just under $2grand is entirely simple to recover. AND you have more choices, AND you know what you're getting.

Well I can't say it's a scam but they charge way too much for shipping, which you still have to pick up the order at their location. We bought or stainless steel stove, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine and dryer all LG for About $6,000. We paid no shipping because we picked it up from the manufactures. Was not bad at all. But then we bought our bedroom set, and living room, and dinning room for about $10,000 price is not bad but they charged us about $1,000 for shipping because they needed to get the product from North Carolina to California. We later found out that the product came from California and about 20mi from direct buy. That was a ripped off! Because you still have to pick it up from direct buy.

I am DB member almost 12 years, I paid may be 2K in start up. I have purchased many Items. I am not looking for cheap of sale Items which any one can have. Recently I have purchased nw home and buying all top line appliance. They had many on Store specials. Took That most of them. where ever I feel they are cheaper outside, I beat the [***] out to the guys to get it more cheaper. Every Year I have few friends who moves and need some good Items. This Pays for my membership. No regrets. Only Thing watch if you dont need it dont buy menbership. $6K now it definately sucks. No use to buy at this cost. If you like it buy it, If you don't stay away. At last it is your choice. If some one use pressure just move away.

    No good
People, do not be deceived.  DirectBuy is a hoax.  Most positive reviews are posted by Directbuy owners.
In time and very soon they'll change their name (AGAIN) and try to rope in more gullible people..
We are long over becoming members and spending thousands to join... Purchased kitchen cabinets that are mediocre and their kitchen remodeling designers were less than qualified... the dishwasher and vacuum cleaner are crappy and found the same models on the internet cheaper...

I'm  sorry I didn't read the complaints online before our visit today.  We didn't  sign on because I don't trust deals that require such quick commitments that involve large sums of money.  In hindsight the whole presentation was boring and sad so even the gift wasn't worth the aggravation.  I feel sorry for the sales agents that have to do this job.  You sleep with dogs you get fleas. Our different sales agents assumed we couldn't afford the fees when we said no thanks.  What we couldn't afford was financial stupidity.
