Don't make our mistake

We attended their presentation and after some calculation decided to pay for the membership which was $4990. We wanted to update our kitchen and bathroom cabinets, as well as bedroom furniture. We put down about $1000, and the rest was financed through their lender Beta Finance.

A month later we started planning our purchases and realized we were about to pay more by buying through them than we would otherwise. What the don't tell you on their presentation is that while you save about 10% on furniture they add 8 % handling charge in addition to 7% tax, and that doesn't include shipping.

I am now trying to get our membership money back. Do not become a member! Buy from other stores.

Trudy I need your help. We have had a membership with them since 09 and have never used it. We found when looking for the things we wanted that it was cheaper to buy elsewhere. I can not find the number for the financing place who is still debiting our account. Can we still cancel and get a refund. Please email me at babygirl1299@yahoo.com ASAP Thank you

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about so many of you being duped by this fraudulent BS company.

I kept getting phone calls today from an unrecognized number.  Finally I just decided to answer so I could make sure it wasn't someone that I actually know who may have really needed to speak with me.
It was some Indian gentleman letting me know that I was a finalist to win a $50,000 home makeover from Direct Buy.  I just let him talk for about 2 or 3 minutes as I put him on speakerphone mute.  He asked me to get a pen and paper so I could write down something important.  I just let him sit there for about 5 uncomfortable minutes as he waited for me to "get" my pen and paper.  Every minute or 2 he would say "Hello, are you there".   Finally he hung up...it was fun.

Hi Trudy, I want in on the information you might have to help get my money back. My husband and I live in El Paso Texas and just today, I found out the DB store was closed. No signs, nothing on the doors. I am pis..... and need any information as to what to do. I have been paying since 2009. I want my money back. Anytime that I would call, the prices quoted were higher than the items I found at Walmart for God's sake. Please advice. Thanks, Angie T.

I want to thank everyone for the great advice you gave me about DB's contract.  We signed the contract on Thursday 12/8/11.  (We got our membership in Southern Maryland.)  Based on info I read on this site about 3 day cooling off period, I wrote a letter of  rescission.  On Monday, 12/12/11, I read about NOT going to the office; instead, to send the letter registered.  I did that Monday afternoon.  Today -- Thursday, 12/15/11 -- I received a check for my full membership fee.  Since I used my credit card, I don't know why they didn't reverse the charge which, as yet, has not been posted to my account.

Thanks to everyone's info.  Have a happy holiday!

Foolishly, my husband and I bought into the DB gimmick. We purchased our membership over a year and a half ago and had buyer's remorse immediately after. We tried to cancel our membership within the same day as we made the purchase but we were told we could not cancel at anytime. Being young and naive, we believed them but didn't give up. We got the run around and three weeks later decided we weren't getting anywhere (and it would cost more than we had to get an attorney involved). We did the only thing we knew to do and took the experience as a lesson learned. After reading all of these postings, I am curious to see...is there anything we can do now? Or has to much time passed?

Any help or advice given is appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Foolish Girl :)

    gave up
No, if you don't cancel the contract within 3 business days the cooling-off period by registered mail, you don't have much of a leg to stand on.
You can gather a lot of price comparisons of their stuff and what you've found cheaper elsewhere.  Try approaching your franchise owner and tell him/her it's not cheaper or better for you at DB.  But then again, it'd take a miracle for an owner to say, "ok, I'll refund you the 5 grand or so and cancel your membership".  I wish.....
As I've learned a very, very painfully hard lesson, NEVER EVER sign a contract like that one under the pressure they put upon their invitees...
DB's a racket, they charge horrendously high membership fees to join.  That's what they're after or they'd give people a chance to sleep on their offer before they make you sign.... They'll go under eventually.  People won't be paying that high price to join when there are so many bargains out there online and in the local stores.

    I need help !
My wife and I joined Direct Buy about 2 years ago and just found out that THE franchise in West Virginia is shutting their doors ! We signed up for 10 years and have been making monthly payments to Beta Finance. We also put a chunk of money down when joining.
Any advice on what to do here to recoup our losses and get away from this finance company ?

I wish I would have gone and researched Direct Buy too.  The prices are sometimes cheaper on the internet and faster delivery.  By the time you add all the nickel and dime charges, of fuel, tax, freight, shipping and the Direct Buy fee you are pretty well over what you can purchase on the internet. The lead time is something else with Direct Buy--add reseaching the item, the time representative takes the order in the showroom, the purchase dept enters it and you are out at least a week or two.  An order of tile can add from 2 weeks to 5 weeks. I wish I could get my hard earned money back too.

I totally agree! My fiancee and i spent 5500 dollars to be a member and expect the best customer service they supposed to provide. The workers in Sacramento district are terrible! The website lie on they're pricing. I am still a member until Sept 2012 but will not renew my membership because they lied on pricing if you don't check it. They will post direct buy price but will charge you regular price if you're not careful. Don't make the mistake we did!!!

We all should band DB or make a commercial to discourage people to become a DB member because they're nothing but LIARS. A&&holes and [***] are the people that you're dealing with.

good plan, but  try and  contact any  media that runs db ads, and they will ignore your complaints,  the media  ( radio and tv stations)  take money over right every time.

I went to a presentation, joined and within 24 hours decided against remaining a member. During the 3 day cooling off period I sent back the materials certified mail and told them I wanted to recind my membership. One of the salespeople who gave the presentation called and tried to persuade me not to recind the membership. I told him my mind was made up and he told me to send back everything I received to get back my intial payment. I have yet to get that back and I recinded the membership in June 2011. I sent them two more letters but no response. What's the next step?

    rescinding
when you send certified mail of cancellation within 3 days of cooling off period and they ignore you, that is illegal.  Keep all your paperwork including, especially the certified mail receipt... They have to honor your right to cancel the way you did..  go to Sm Claims Crt with your receipts of certification that you mailed within the alloted time frame and you will win.. they are just jerking you around... you should be successful because you utilized the cancellation policy perfectly..
