We attended their presentation and after some calculation decided to pay for the membership which was $4990. We wanted to update our kitchen and bathroom cabinets, as well as bedroom furniture. We put down about $1000, and the rest was financed through their lender Beta Finance.

A month later we started planning our purchases and realized we were about to pay more by buying through them than we would otherwise. What the don't tell you on their presentation is that while you save about 10% on furniture they add 8 % handling charge in addition to 7% tax, and that doesn't include shipping.

I am now trying to get our membership money back. Do not become a member! Buy from other stores.

I became a member of Direct Buy a few years ago.. of course because I felt pressured into it since I was told that if I had left I would never have a chance to return.....what  a waste of my money and I still feel awful to this day that I spent all that money on the membership!! I probably got only 1/2 my money back of the membership before it expired. I would LOVE to take part a in Class Action Lawsuit against this terrible company !!  If anyone has any info about a lawsuit here in Canada or would be interesting in starting one please e-mail me at rocville@yahoo.ca thank you!

No need to echo the negativity of their service, but here is a tactic that was ridiculous.  My wife and I attended the open house Sep 21, 2012.  They use one gimmick I have experienced with a deceptive used car dealer.  Coming up to your sales rep and saying something like, “we have two other people interested and is going to do paperwork for that car.”  So the so called owner kept coming to our table and mentioning loudly to the guy working with us, “When you are finished, I need you to go and complete the paperwork on 2 of the couples that decided to join.”  The group consisted of 4 couples.  I saw one couple leaving, another with the husband pushing the application paper back with his head going side to side which in my universe, means no.  So that meant me and another couple, if even still in the store had said yes.  I said to the sales rep, “You can’t miss what you’ve never had,” so walking out will not stop us from continuing to live within our means and not looking for a handout or shortcut.  I have not called the travel agency to find out about my 4 night free Carnival cruise.  But if it is like the Tabloid, I will probably need to bring my own life jacket and be prepared to row.  On another note, the sales rep did say several times, “if you don’t mind waiting about 7 business days for your order.”  He also said and wrote on the board several times, “0” for shipping and handling.

And if the contract says different, what do you think the salesman's misrepresentation that will get you?

Went to open house in Lenexa, Ks last week.  We decided that it wasn't what we need at this time, and we were told that we could not reapply, they couldn't accept our membership, because of manufacturers agreement. ( Didn't make since)  so we took our price and left. We received an Android tablet, that was manufacture in Japan, time and language was still set in foreign language, and was a joke.  At least we had a nice day out and if what they gave as a price, was any indication of the kind of manufactures they are carrying, I'm very glad we settled for just a nice day outing, that day.  BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe these people are scam artists and they are good at what they do.  They don't tell you that you are responsible for paying the shipping and handling and delivery charges.  After joining we decided we wanted
a refund and of course you cannot do that because they make it hard for you to do that since they only give you three days!

This Club is a hoax... too good to be true for us honestly (& they are not honest), seeking wholesale and the good deals DB expouses....We don't have a lot - that's why we believed their sales speil...to get us a buyers advantage.    If you purchase anything, after joining, after forking over thousands of dollars to be a 'member' and then order something from them, you pay up front, no guarantees, no nothing and you're going out on a limb... shipping & handling, taxes, etc... no returns cause you've pd up front...
skip it, don't even go there... unless you have more money than brains...  don't make our mistake*  still eatin it

My wife and I just celebrated our 5th anniversary with DirectBuy (DB as we call it).  Although as some of you state the membership fee is steep, we more than made that up on our first purchase.  We found that instead of spending less, we usually spend the same amount that we would have in the retail world, but get much better quality...such as instead of a composite bed set that is veneered, getting a solid wood set. etc.  We have saved a lot of money at DB but it is true that not all products are better bought at DB.  Some things are the same price by the time you get done with tax and shipping as at the retail stores, but this is not the case most of the time.  DB is definitely a great deal for anyone buying a first home, remodeling or building a new home.  It offers great prices, and depending on which DB you're near, the product specialist are always very helpful.  My local DB bakes chocolate chip cookies everyday too...yummy.

    DISPLEASED FROM  NJ
I have been a member when Dirct Buy was "UCC" . We were building our first home and ordered all our lights interior and Exterior. All bathroom items, whole house furnature. Since we live on the East Coast we used east coast venders when possible. Never had a problem with any returns. We are members simce 1987.

This past month I purchased a Kitchen Island from the company Powell. It was manufactued in Vietiam, It stated Proudly USA...NOT...designed in USA only. It was made with cement board not wood, as stated and will NOT take back the Item when refused delivery. I am fighting with Direct Buy. They will refund HALF my money and want me to take redelivey for a damaged Item that was made cheaply!!!! I WANT MY MONEY!!

Yes you can. I got out of my contract from direct buy the day after we signed. I went in person though. Don't call because you won't get a straight answer.

I've been a member 5 years. I've purchased everything from shoes to furniture and flooring. I'm shocked at some of the problems. My DB clubs I use have been amazing. yes, some things take a while but that's how you save money. If you want it right away, go to the retailers and give away your money. It's your choice. Invest in yourselves or the stores. It's a no brainer for me and my family. Best wishes.

We were invited to a presentation on November 6, 2012.  It lasted about 90 minutes.  We told the person that we would not benefit from joining because we were an older couple that would not be buying very much.  A much younger couple was in the same presentation, and I believe they bought the membership.
The man told us to wait at a table because he needed to talk with the other couple and then he would get our gifts for us.  Well, we waited and waited.  It was almost an hour.  We couldn't wait any longer so I went to another employee and told him that we had to leave.  He was very nice and got our gifts for us and we left.  We thought this was very rude of the other man to leave us and make us wait almost an hour.  We never talked with the first man again.  I think he was upset with us because we didn't buy a membership.  I would not advise anyone to purchase a membership.

thanks to everyone who posted. I was just solicited by phone and was told that the fees were around $200. Of course no mention of the initial fee. So i googled them and very few people have anything good to say about their business practices. Thanks for saving me from a lot of hassle. Free airline tickets (if I would ever get them) are simply not worth it.

I just read all the complaints and I am scared!  We just made the down payment to join and am having second thoughts now.  Does anyone have any experiences with the Barrie, Ontario store? I would love to get your input before we are totally committed.

    Sorry to be a member
    Wouldn't recommend it at all.
You don't save any money at all. You can get the same prices out there if you just look a bit and save yourself thousand of dollars in membership.
Customer service o the store in elmsford ny is non existent.

    Don't make my mistake

so mad I never saw this forum before
DB is the worst mistake my husband and I have made! Today I was in there and i saw the owner teaching a new "recruit" how to sell to new prospective members, it made me so mad. Do yourself a favour and spend the 5K on beautiful things for you home direct from retail! I don't know how we could have been so stupid not to have done some research first before signing that ridiculous contract.
