Digital Star unauthorized charge

Complaint

Steve
Country: United States
A preauthorization for $74.95 from Digital Star with a bad phone number (208-123-7377) showed up on my debit card account 1/29/12.  Called bank fraud department and had the account killed immediately.  They stopped the charge since it had not completed.  Do not know who Digital Star is or what the charge was for.  I use the card for online purchases mainly through Amazon.  No purchases in the last 30 dqays.  However, I placed orders in the last 60 days from a company called Turncraft (woodworking plans), Personal Creations, and Entirely Pets. I wonder what companies others have used recently.

I have also just got off the phone with Bank of America today February 8th 2012, because the same charge  $74.95 from Digital Star is showing on my account as 'processing.' But of course, Bank of America has told me that they cannot day anything until the transaction has been processed! Can you imagine they let them still the money first, and attend to your complaint?  It seems to me, people have shared enough information about this Digital Star thing to cause suspicion from the banks, and thus denial of any transactions to this 'company' or whatever it is. And where is the FBI to help us? I am in Boston MA

That is 3 very recent charges for $148.99, or double the earlier $74.95 amount.

It may be that the crooks are upping the take, probably figuring they might as well get as much as they can, since it can't go on forever.

Be sure to immediately contact your bank to dispute all charges as FRAUDULENT, and BLOCK THE CARD NUMBER to prevent additional fraud.  INSIST that the bank send you a fraud affidavit to return, to document that this is FRAUD, and return it mailed certified so you have proof of returning it.

If your bank screws up, you want a paper trail to document your timely dispute.

Doesn't look like the banks did anything while the charges were only $75.
Now they are being routinely reported as $150.

How high do they have to go to get the source shut down?

Wow this is totally fucced up for sure. I just got hit a few hours ago by this digital star con artist as well and they got my paypal credit card for the same amount as Steve, 149.99 and the Digital Star +44208123,+442081237377,GB The sad thing is paypal says they cannot stop the transaction that if the con artist comes back that they can get the money and the only thing I can do is wait and they will refund me whatever I lose. The really sad part for me is that this has happened 2 times in the last several months with my paypal debit card and it really sucks.

Same, yesterday I had a $1 Pending charge from Amazon.com on my 3 BOA cards which was weird since I didn't order anything. Then today 3 charges for $148.99 from 02/08 DIGITAL STAR +44208123

$1 pending, as a "ping" to see if the card is active or the information accurate, may indicate they are getting more careful.

If the pending $1 charges showed up as Amazon, they may have used an online download purchase through Amazon to "ping" and test the card numbers.

Since the $1 Amazon charges did not actually go through, yet the later "Digital Star" charges did go through, it may be that Amazon has some clue about the characteristics of the fraudulent "ping" charges, maybe the IP address from which they are being made.

That both ping charges and digital star charges occurred against all 3 of your cards, in sequence, suggests the two were in fact related, as you already suspect.

On top of disputing the fraudulent charges with BofA, and blocking the cards, you might want to call Amazon's fraud department.

The crooks ping your account to learn the expiry date and if too short they ignore you. So to prevent this change your expiry date to a short time and readjust when you order.c3e6

I had the same issue this morning. Got hit for 149.99 by the same digital start +4....  I do not use Amazon but I was wondering if any of you use paypal for payments for anything? The only thing I can think of is that, I always use my paypal to pay for things but  if I do not have the funds, it withdraws from my account as a back up

I went on my online banking this morning and saw a fraudulent charge if $148.99 from them also.  Thank goodness my bank issued a credit of the money while they are investigating it.

$149.99 was charged to my debit card from Digital Star +4 442081377. I had just added this card to my Amazon account for a purchase about 2 days ago and I am an avid paypal user as well. Called my bank (Wells Fargo) and they canceled the debit card and are conducting an investigation. This has happened to me once before and took around a week to resolve. Best of luck to you all and may we merrily participate in any just prosecution that may come of this. Off to check my other accounts!

There has been an increase in reports of larger fraudulent charges of $149, compared to the original $74.95 ones.

Well my account was just charged $498.99 from a Digital Star+442. I order from Amazon last week as well. I am going to file fraud papers with Citizens Bank today and they said they will refund the money and look into it. As for Amazon I called and noone there wanted to help me. I am simply trying to let them know that someone is steeling personal information, obviously off of there site and its like they dont even care. WOW! I understand that stuff happens and it's probably a hacker but way to care about your customers Amazon. You wont be getting my business any more. I see all these complaints on here and there telling me this is the first time they have heard of this. Someone please tell me you have called and inquired about this too?

Before you jump on Amazon's case, read through this thread. I for one as well as other people NEVER bought anything from Amazon. So why on earth would I call them?  I would be wasting my time. I do not work for Amazon. I'm just saying don't jump to conclusions. There are lots of theories on here. Read.
