Harassing Phone Calls

Complaint

We have been receiving unwanted phone calls from Northland Group since 5/18/2007. They call from 1-866-380-8783 every day and ask for a person whose name I've never heard before.

It seems as someone used our address and phone number in their loan application, and Northland Group is trying to collect the debt.

For some reason people from Northland Group refuse to believe that the person they are looking for is not leaving with us, and continue their harassing calls.

I submitted my complaint to FTC, but I thought I should also let know here about this issue.

Well They were rude to my call as well.  they read things off of my husbands credit report asking him questions.  Kurt Kimmel was the collect that did it and told me that I was going to get my checkbook and pay it.  I spoke with Kyle his supervisor and he was rude as well.  I contacted Laurie Burguesen 866-494-9466 and she handled my complaints.  She is the complaint manager there.  She is very helpful and willing and she removed my number.

Just filed a complaint with the BBB.  These people have been harrassing me for more than three years to pay for merchandise I never received.  Northland thinks I should pay for it anyway, and they will (maybe) quit calling.

These people just want to collect a fee any way they can.

OMG these people are idiots. They used to call me2 years ago, non stop asking for a Torrel Goodman and they have called back two years later, even though I called them and asked them not to call this number ( and I was nice and they were total A@@es, and didn't believe me that this wasn't this guy's phone number who i've never met in my life, They said they would make a note that this number is not Toreel's and they have started calling me again as of last week. There should be a law against this.

It's really simple. This info is VERY accurate. You know you owe it. You can say you don't....but you do. You're humans so youre cheap, dishonest, and selfish. They ask simple questions. All info they ask for, such as last 4 of social is not ENTIRE social, so they can't do anything other than verify you. If you don't answer, it's simple....they'll just keep calling you. They can and will. None of you are innocent. I'm no longer a debt collector, but I'm looking back at all these boards about collections...and god, you people [***] so much! If you're not the debtor they look for, they will stop calling you. If you are, you owe the bill. God this is amusing, and no I won't be replying to any posts...you aren't decieving anyone. Pay your bills.

Heres the problem with remaining polite when you call. I don't owe the money, you have the wrong number. I most often have never heard of the people/person you are looking for.And my phone rings more for people I have never heard of then it does for me. Very annoying. It is like a unpaid telephone service to keep answering these calls. If, by chance, I do know the person, it would be my ex and I don't mind passing on his info if you don't come off as passing judgement on me. But most collectors are aggressive and accusing.Which makes me feel like to give them info is like letting someone come in my house and bully me. No thanks.
Mean people suck, whether it is your job or not. Find a better way.

My parents started getting these calls on 5/8/08 insisting that they owe for a bill of $37 for something they have never heard of. My parents have perfect credit so they knew immediately it was a scam. Then on 5/9/08 I started getting calls also, I have not answered them and they do not leave a message but this is definetely a scam. We have reported it the the Better Business Bureau online and I advise EVERYONE does they can proceed to investigate ASAP!!!!!

I received a harrassing call today.  The person asked to verify my full name.  As calmly as I could, I said I would not reveal my identity to a stranger.  Please state the nature of your call.  He would not.  I asked to be removed from his call list, he said it wasn't a solicitation call.  I asked for an address where I could request to be communicated with in writing, as is my legal right.  He said he'd call me tomorrow when I was in a better mood!  Glad I found this web-site.

What most of you don't understand is that debt collectors can not reveal the nature of their call by the FDCPA until a second piece of information is verified. Now we don't need you to PROVIDE it, most of the time we GIVE IT TO you and just need you to VERIFY it...pretty simple! Northland doesn't "buy" debt either so get your facts straight. As far as the calls go, NGI employees make hundreds of calls each day and don't get paid to "harass" people, they get paid to collect....also, perhaps your phone number USED to belong to "John Doe" and its on his credit bureau report (where collection agencies pull info from) - we're trying to contact him/her with that info so if its wrong we will mark it wrong but don't blame us, the information is still reported as good on the credit bureaus.....thats the companies you need to contact to have the # removed. And yes the statute of limitations might have run out on your account, that only means no legal action can be taken against you, it doesn't mean your bill was wiped clean.
Lastly, I'm probably one of the nicest collectors/people you will talk to unless you get rude with me. I understand people can be rude when they call initially, so I would like to apologize for that but don't categorize all of us together because just like you, we're people and all act differently.

If that were always the case it would be a perfect world.  However, I have tried being nothing to polite to the people who have called asking for someone that I DO NOT KNOW.  I have politely said sorry, you have the wrong number. how many times can I say that?  When I called the number back to ask to be removed, I was given an attitude and told "well, you called us, stop calling us".  Excuse me?

So being polite only gets you so far.  Espeically when the calls are not for me or anyone in my household (or anyone that I know, for that matter).

If collectors cannot do their job without being rude - get another job.  yes, you are in the line of business where people will lie, yell, etc at you, but you know what, you took the job.

Keep your sick advice and put it where the sun don't shine. I don't know what era you are from but I'm old and retired and do not appreciate some young kids doing this kind of nonsensicle type of activity to get off on. We live in a sick society and sometimes we are victimized by others who have to resort to this because they do not qualify for anything better. Disrespectible people who prey on respectible people should examine their life style and do something to change. What goes around comes around.

I once had a high-ranking police officer knock on my door at 7:00 am serving me papers to appear in court because a collection agency (not Northland Group) was after me.  If I didn't answer the door, I suppose he would've came to my workplace which really would've been embarrassing.  I did go to court and I lost and had to pay monthly payments. I paid them every month (sometimes a little late) until recently when they returned a payment check saying they no longer collect for this.  They wrote on a post-it note, "try contacting _______ company in Canada about it".  I'm not going to.  I know that judgement is on my credit report but I was surprised to find that I was able to buy a car and a house recently at good interest rates.  5.5 & 6.875 respectively.  I'm not using credit cards for anything else.  Anyway, Northland Group and others are after me currently for old debts that may or may not be legit.  I'll be damned if I'm taking their word for it.  As stressful as it is wondering when the next knock at the door will come, I'm not paying anything until forced to in court.  At that time, I'll document all of my debts to prove that I can only afford so much per month.  I won't be able to include what other agencies want because that's hearsay and the judge can't bind me to make me pay them so he'll just make me pay all of my extra money to whoever takes me to court first.  If someone else comes along later, then the next judge will make me pay whatever is left over, if anything.  Can he make me go bankrupt?  I don't know.  I don't want to do that because it's too expensive...

Finally, to you collectors out there, here's where your wrong:  Sometimes you have the right person, but the info is wrong and the person does not owe anything.  You are rude, threatening, etc. to those people.  No excuse for that.  Or, are you saying you're right 100 percent of the time?  That's why it's a dishonorable profession the way you go about it.  You don't have enough info on anyone you call to say with certainty that the person is guilty of the debt.  Sure, most, maybe even a very high percentage are good legit collections, but not 100 percent.  Is it ok to make a housewife cry because, what the hell, collateral damage right?  Wrong.  Period.

I too have received one call a day for the past week from Northland.  They are alleging that I owe $133 from 1994.  On the initial call, I made the mistake of answering my phone, I did not give the caller the opportunity to become rude, because I beat him to the punch.  Today, I received a letter from them in the mail.  They only provided a PO Box, but thanks to this site I have been able to obtain a street address and will be forwarding a decease contact letter to them immediately.  Thanks for all of the useful information, I have excellent credit and was somewhat concerned that they would be able destroy my credit with a bu**sh*t allegation until I saw this website.

    I'm calling from *garblegarble*...
I'm here because my college student son has been called by someone from *garblegarble* (hmm...  seems to have happened to a lot of folks on this website) who wanted to know if his girlfriend was born in November 1981 (which she wasn't, but he asked why they they wanted to know).  Then the guy proceeds to tell him that he's sent the girlfriend many notices regarding a $6,000 past due balance on a Mastercard!  My son says, "That's not possible."  The guy says, "She's been hiding it from you.  She's made payments on it..."  (again, something a lot of folks are saying on this website)  Anyway, my son tells me the number that showed up on his caller ID, and I dialed it from my office (not the same state he's in).  They let it ring for an eternity and then answer, "Northland Group."  I asked some questions, but all that the man would tell me is, "We're not a telemarketing group."  Naturally he wanted to know who I was and what number I was calling from...

In reading all these posts, I am struck by the debt collectors who contribute to the conversation in a righteous, judgmental fashion.  Do you really believe you are "in the right" when you call people and "trick" them into giving you information to allow you to further harass them?  When you call them and purposefully speak too rapidly for them to understand what company you work for?  When you LIE to them????  Maybe the collector who called my son and told him that his girlfriend is "hiding" a debt from him thinks he accomplished something (like what, a ticket to Hell?).

Here's my suggestion to anyone who is being called/contacted by this company:  When these mean people call you, tell them nothing.  NOTHING.  Hang up.  Then get a copy of your credit report.  If the "debt" they're calling about doesn't appear on the report, change your phone number to an unlisted number.  If it DOES appear on your credit report, and you don't owe it, send them a certified (return receipt letter) stating that you do not owe the debt, and demanding that they contact the credit bureau and REMOVE IMMEDIATELY the inaccurate information.

And, to all you debt collectors out there, I have to tell you that you're not fooling me.  You DON'T have a good job.  Somebody's got to do it, I know.  And yes, there are deadbeats out there who need to pay their debts.    But that doesn't justify hounding people who have nothing to give you.  That's bullying.  Nor does it justify using fear tactics to scare innocent people into pay money they don't owe  just to get you off their backs.  That's extortion.  One thing is clear:  you do this for a piece of the pie.  A little bit of money, no matter what it takes to get it.  Isn't that what [***] do?  No, wait a minute, [***] don't have victims.

This business is the biggest pain in the neck , committing illegal acts regularly which are Fair Debt Collection violations, It is a joke when you look on their site and they claim they got an award from Capitol One Bamk for best service. Northland has called my house for months and harrassed, which is one violation becaseu debt collection companies cant callnumerous times on the phone  and harrass people. They call and dont say they are a debt collection agency which is another violation. They have now sent a letter threatening  a judgemsnt on a account which is over the four year statute of limitiations for debt collection, in which case they cannot collect a debt over four years old.And Nothland cant file a judgemsnt anyway.  This is  a Capitol One Bank account, no less, the very company they said on their site has given them a award for such good business tactics. i have turned Nothland into a attorney and am filing a lawsuit against them. Anyone with a problem like thiw call the Attorney General in your state and they can tell you whoto  to contact for help, or where to go. In the meqantime I would like to tell Northland where to go. Good businesses practices, my rear end. This company is a scavenger with illegal techniqies just like the rest of these bill collectors. , Bussiness like these are usually not run by people with  the most ethical standards , or common sense. And in response to Kabb, yes it is illegal for them to contact your work, You need to contact a attorney who handles consumer affairs . They also have to identify themselves as a bill collector when they call, keep all their calls on a answering machine so they are recorded  or tape record them if you talk to them. I let my answering machine get their calls and then sent the tape to my attorney.  i have dealt alot with thiw garbage.

Northland Group is harassing me 2-3 time a day and even calling my work  for a  debt has been charged off for $92.00 than I get a letter in the mail owning $796.00.  Thats why people have debt because ass----- like Northland don't give a sh-- about people just debt.  You can't tell them I can only afford $ 25.00 they won't accept it.
If I am willing to work with you, than I think you should work with me too? Who knows they might have bad credit also Now that I have this site with all what I know I am not worried about a 92.00 debt over 5 yrs ago...

I received a call from Northland Group saying I owe money for a Shell/Citibank Card. I looked at my credit report and it clearly shows that there is a zero balance and the account is closed. I talked to Shell/Citibank and there is nothing notated on my account that they have sought a collection agency for this account. I called Northland and of course they were rude and told me to talk like a normal human being. I called the FTC an filed a complaint and I am hoping there is more we can do to them. They are a fraud, nothing more than a fraud!
