Harassing Phone Calls
Complaint
Gloria Engle
Country: United States
We have been receiving unwanted phone calls from Northland Group since 5/18/2007. They call from 1-866-380-8783 every day and ask for a person whose name I've never heard before.
It seems as someone used our address and phone number in their loan application, and Northland Group is trying to collect the debt.
For some reason people from Northland Group refuse to believe that the person they are looking for is not leaving with us, and continue their harassing calls.
I submitted my complaint to FTC, but I thought I should also let know here about this issue.

Mean people suck, whether it is your job or not. Find a better way.
Lastly, I'm probably one of the nicest collectors/people you will talk to unless you get rude with me. I understand people can be rude when they call initially, so I would like to apologize for that but don't categorize all of us together because just like you, we're people and all act differently.
So being polite only gets you so far. Espeically when the calls are not for me or anyone in my household (or anyone that I know, for that matter).
If collectors cannot do their job without being rude - get another job. yes, you are in the line of business where people will lie, yell, etc at you, but you know what, you took the job.
Finally, to you collectors out there, here's where your wrong: Sometimes you have the right person, but the info is wrong and the person does not owe anything. You are rude, threatening, etc. to those people. No excuse for that. Or, are you saying you're right 100 percent of the time? That's why it's a dishonorable profession the way you go about it. You don't have enough info on anyone you call to say with certainty that the person is guilty of the debt. Sure, most, maybe even a very high percentage are good legit collections, but not 100 percent. Is it ok to make a housewife cry because, what the hell, collateral damage right? Wrong. Period.
In reading all these posts, I am struck by the debt collectors who contribute to the conversation in a righteous, judgmental fashion. Do you really believe you are "in the right" when you call people and "trick" them into giving you information to allow you to further harass them? When you call them and purposefully speak too rapidly for them to understand what company you work for? When you LIE to them???? Maybe the collector who called my son and told him that his girlfriend is "hiding" a debt from him thinks he accomplished something (like what, a ticket to Hell?).
Here's my suggestion to anyone who is being called/contacted by this company: When these mean people call you, tell them nothing. NOTHING. Hang up. Then get a copy of your credit report. If the "debt" they're calling about doesn't appear on the report, change your phone number to an unlisted number. If it DOES appear on your credit report, and you don't owe it, send them a certified (return receipt letter) stating that you do not owe the debt, and demanding that they contact the credit bureau and REMOVE IMMEDIATELY the inaccurate information.
And, to all you debt collectors out there, I have to tell you that you're not fooling me. You DON'T have a good job. Somebody's got to do it, I know. And yes, there are deadbeats out there who need to pay their debts. But that doesn't justify hounding people who have nothing to give you. That's bullying. Nor does it justify using fear tactics to scare innocent people into pay money they don't owe just to get you off their backs. That's extortion. One thing is clear: you do this for a piece of the pie. A little bit of money, no matter what it takes to get it. Isn't that what [***] do? No, wait a minute, [***] don't have victims.
If I am willing to work with you, than I think you should work with me too? Who knows they might have bad credit also Now that I have this site with all what I know I am not worried about a 92.00 debt over 5 yrs ago...
