I purchased a Whirlpool Cabrio (Mod:  Wtw7800x, Ser: c02470238) in March 2011.  About a year ago the lid broke.  This was replaced as it was under warranty.  It is broken again.  Same problem, the hinge on the right side cracked.  The serviceman said the lid was defective, … again.  This part costs $240.

Whirlpool Service, Bingaman ID # 3695, just told me Whirlpool would not stand behind their defective parts because I am out of warranty.  While this may be legal, I find this behavior inappropriate.  Whirlpool can charge exurbanite fees and not stand behind their overpriced defective parts.

Service made it sound like extended warranty was part of the price.  Whirlpool can charge anything for their parts and quality is not considered.  I have to wonder if building defective machines is part of Whirlpool’s business plan.  I’m not going to buy from a company who believes this is an appropriate business ethic.

We've had our Whirlpool Cabrio washer and dryer just over a year.  I like them both but the we are having problems with our lid.  The first one cracked after 9 months & they replace the lid.  Two months later the new one cracked & they replaced the hinges and lid again.  I assure you we are very careful when lowering and lifting the lid.  I do 80% and my husband does 20% and we are very cautious of it especially after the second one broke.  Now I was just putting laundry in and the third one cracked while lifting the lid.  There is obviously a problem and I'm wondering if anyone else is having the same issues.  Eventually it will crack all the way through which will cause the glass to pop up and the lid won't lock.  I will not buy anything with a glass lid again!

We have the same year and model and we have to push all of our weight on the lid to have it lock for the wash cycle to go- and the cycle always ends 1 minute early. We have to turn the power off to open the lid.

I have the exact same issue and whirpool assured me there is no design flaw or records of any one complaining the lid snapped from being lifted to put clothes in. I am so disappointed in this wash machine. I now have to take my laundry out as we have not bought a new machine yet and I refuse to pay to fix this one! I won't buy whirpool again that is for sure

So did we, and we have the same problem. I am so ticked off with these large corporations like Whirlpool who design and engineer these high end machines with little to know thought. Then they refuse to warranty the obvious flaws in them with the expectation that people will just dig in their pockets again and again to repair them. If everybody boycotted the heck of out them and slammed them on digital media we could make a difference and stop them. Let's face it with these type of repairs the machines are going to end up in the land fill every 3 years and we will be back buying another one. How do they get away with it??

I have had the same experience. Initial lid failed about 3 years after purchase and I quickly learned that Whirlpool is not taking ownership for the major design flaw. If it is not safety they just ignor there design issues. I am an engineer and am quite sure this is a flawed design. Certainly will not buy Whirlpool again but they make many appliances but not under their own name.
POS lid it cost me $900 for initial washer in 2012. Another $200 for replacement lid. Same POS lid. It failed in less than 1 year now I am finished with a Whirlpool forever. I am going out today to purchase an LG model washer. If whirlpool will not stand up and redesign the part (the lid) -- the defective part, then I must vote with my money and buy LG washer.

I hope whirlpool goes out of business so other do not get screwed like I did. Good bye Whirlpool, may you suffer and go bankrupt.

Sounds like a class action suit is necessary to get them to stand by their products. I just bought a Cabrio and it wont go through the entire spin and rinse and drainage. code says "oL"! I tried to download the owners manual from the site and am unable to get it. Does anyone know what the code is for? It's ridiculous the new machine is not working. Ive leveled the entire thing prior to turning it on and have done three washes thus far. Each one has to be shut off and gone to the spin drain manually! Seriously???

Yup my lid did the same thing! And so did the second one! It still works. Just gotta hold the lid down till it locks, but whirlpool does suck and so does there warranty. I'll never buy whirlpool again and encourage others not to as well.

I have done a repair to mine. Just might be the trick. Use a 3" long piece of 3/4" aluminum "u" channel with two holes drilled for access to the mount screws and glue in to place. It supports the plastic area around the hinge. So far so good. I would post a pic if I knew how.

It not you or the way you are using the machine.  Its a defect and Whirlpool know it.  I wish they would recall these machines. I am pretty sure they never will.

We have the same model and ours just broke - left side near the rear hinge.  Seems like we purchased over a year ago so I'm sure it is out of warranty.

My Cabrio has done the same thing.  My daughter went to Lowe's in another state to buy a new machine and they told her they won't even sell the glass lid one anymore due to the defect and all the problems with the lids breaking.  I hold mine down to get it to lock but am getting tired of that too now.

The lid to my Cabrio started breaking just after the warranty was no longer in force.  First, the left side hinge and now the right side.  The left side hinge is completely gone now and I'm afraid the whole lid will fall off sometime!  I have to close my cupboard door in front of the lid to keep it open for loading and unloading and I also have to hold mine down to make it lock as well!  I am really surprised that Whirlpool does not stand behind this defective part.
