I purchased a Whirlpool Cabrio (Mod:  Wtw7800x, Ser: c02470238) in March 2011.  About a year ago the lid broke.  This was replaced as it was under warranty.  It is broken again.  Same problem, the hinge on the right side cracked.  The serviceman said the lid was defective, … again.  This part costs $240.

Whirlpool Service, Bingaman ID # 3695, just told me Whirlpool would not stand behind their defective parts because I am out of warranty.  While this may be legal, I find this behavior inappropriate.  Whirlpool can charge exurbanite fees and not stand behind their overpriced defective parts.

Service made it sound like extended warranty was part of the price.  Whirlpool can charge anything for their parts and quality is not considered.  I have to wonder if building defective machines is part of Whirlpool’s business plan.  I’m not going to buy from a company who believes this is an appropriate business ethic.

Our lid has also cracked and the glass is sticking up.  I have to hold my lid down to get it to lock.  Bought in 2011 and cracked within first year but didn't think much about it.  Now another year later it is cracked on both sides and getting to the point of being unusable.  Have called Whirlpool several times and they still say that it is a cosmetic issue and not a defect.  Really??
From one very frusturated whirlpool customer!!

Same here. Rear right side of my lid. The glass is sticking up and the lid is warped. In out of warranty. Looks like I'm buying Samsung or GE appliances from now on.

My Cabrio is just over 2 years old and the lid just cracked.  I called Whirlpool and they acted as if they had never heard of this happening. The person then said that I should have purchased an extended warranty.   I was offered a 25% discount on a new lid which costs over $250.00.  After looking on the internet, I found that there are hundreds of complaints about the glass lid.  I will never buy from Whirlpool again and will do my best to make sure none of my friends do either!

My whirlpool cabrio washer is about four years old and the glass lid just shattered.  It wasn't even being used and no one was around.  Glass everywhere.  Horrible.

Same story here. My cabrio washer lid is broke at the hinges and won't open or close properly because the frame around the glass is sprung. Whirlpool acts like it is the consumers problem when there have been so many complaints! The product is defective and I wish I had bought a different brand. I was told by whirlpool that "doing online research is hearsay and should be disregard". I Told them these are their customers and that when everyone is describing the exact same issue with the glass lid it might just be their product! After that the customer service rep was plain rude!

I have the same issue.  Purchased in October 2012.  All of a sudden the right rear side looked warped and the glass top came out.  At first I was told it was 100 percent my responsibility to fix.  After many emails and postings on their Facebook page, today the compromise is that Whirlpool will replace the parts and I pay the labor.  Should be done late next week.  Time will tell if it breaks again.  Does anyone know if this model has a plain lid to replace the glass?  I would rather have that.

Same issue - purchased washer/dryer in December, 2010.  First lid cracked at the hinges about 14 months later.  Paid $333.12 to replace and have installed in April of 2013.  Just noticed the right side of the replacement lid is now cracked.  Whirlpool customer service told me they would log my complaint in their database for future design consideration but that any repairs are solely my responsibility.

Exact same problem. First lid replaced under warranty within first year. Same cracking at hinges after six months. Lid almost completely off now. Ridiculous. I will never buy Whirlpool again.  Any decent company would recall and replace defect for free.

I have the same issue.  Their website and customer service is a joke.  Called their customer service number and was on hold forever and finally hung up.  Sent email no response.   Can't believe they do not stand behind their products.  My cheaper Kenmore washer that I had replace was a lot better and lasted for over 10 years!

Same issue as all above.  Our third lid has now broken.  While out shopping for a new washer I did look at the current model Cabrio.  Interestingly, they have redesigned the lid for the new model.  If it was not a design flaw then why the redesign on the lid at the same position that mine and I am sure all of those listed here cracked.  I have notified the BBB and I highly suggest anyone who has had an issue do the same.  I contacted Whirlpool originally regarding this issue and was told it was not a noted issue with this washer, however since notifying the BBB I have a call scheduled for this afternoon with them to discuss.

I've experienced the same problem with my Cabrio lid.  I had it replaced the first time, approximately one year after I purchased the machine, and now the lid is broken again.  I contacted Whirlpool and asked if this particular model had a defective lid and the rep stated that they had not received any other complaints on this washing machine.  Really!

In September, less than two years after purchase, left hinge rusted through and broke on Cabrio (Platinum Model # WTW8600YW0).  Spent two hours to replace the $43 part.  We heard the replacement hinge snap this evening.  Whirlpool, must know of this design flaw that allows this hinge to rust and then fail, but refuses to acknowledge the problem.  Never...ever....again will we buy a Whirlpool product.
