I purchased a Whirlpool Cabrio (Mod:  Wtw7800x, Ser: c02470238) in March 2011.  About a year ago the lid broke.  This was replaced as it was under warranty.  It is broken again.  Same problem, the hinge on the right side cracked.  The serviceman said the lid was defective, … again.  This part costs $240.

Whirlpool Service, Bingaman ID # 3695, just told me Whirlpool would not stand behind their defective parts because I am out of warranty.  While this may be legal, I find this behavior inappropriate.  Whirlpool can charge exurbanite fees and not stand behind their overpriced defective parts.

Service made it sound like extended warranty was part of the price.  Whirlpool can charge anything for their parts and quality is not considered.  I have to wonder if building defective machines is part of Whirlpool’s business plan.  I’m not going to buy from a company who believes this is an appropriate business ethic.

After reading over 20 complaints of the same problem on the  Cabrio washing machine, I too have had mine replaced twice.  The third is NOT the charm and I will be turning this over to a consumer watchdog at a local LA newsroom.  Whirlpool needs to replace all our machines with one that will not break no matter where we bought it.  I wont even give whirlpool a chance, ENOUGH!

My lid cracked also.  It actually lasted about 3 years.  After spending $200+ on a replacement lid, the new one lasted all of 9 months.  This is ridiculous and obviously a design flaw.  Never again will I buy a Whirlpool.  On a separate, unrelated note.  The dryer is four years old and went caput.  I'm done with Whirlpool.

i purchased my Whirlpool Cabrio washing machine with the glass lid and i am having the same problem. my lid is broken and i called Whirlpool thinking this should be a recall since there are so many compaints on this problem and was told that is nothing they could do and it would cost $250.00 to replace the part or i have 3 days to get another whirlpool washer at a discount (like i would do that). a 2 year old washer should not have this problem. I will not buy another whirlpool washer.

Same as all the other complaints left side broke and Whirlpool will not replace it. Claims there is no issue reported with this model. I advised of all the complaints that I read on the internet of other with the same issue. Replacement for the lid cost almost as much as the washer. I read that someone replaced their lid with a metal one which is cheaper. I am looking for that post. It is a shame because I really like the washer. Whirlpool Get a Life stop ripping us off.

Same lid problem. Has Whirlpool done the right thing and offered a new lid that will not break for free, due to this being a design flaw? If not, as a company, they have destroyed their reputation.

I just had my Whirlpool lid replaced today at the cost of $417! This included the service call.  I will be calling Whirlpool.  It also looks like they may have changed the lid a bit on the side.  I sent the repairman off with my old lid so I am unable to examine and compare the two of them. I will never purchase a Whirlpool again if they do not refund my money!

We have had the same issues. First lid was replaced while under warranty; second lid whirlpool said they would take our concerns to the design team as it sounds as if there is a design flaw (duh do you think!). Really I feel whirlpool has a huge major design flaw and a recall should be made now and not wait until someone's glass actually does fly out of the frame and cause bodily harm to someone, because then they will have a major lawsuit on their hands. At this time our lids once again needs to be replaced due to cracking/warping and the glass coming out; and I am so thankful many researched and shared replacement metal lids as we are definitely going to purchase one since whirlpool is no help whatsoever.

We are having the same problem. First lid lasted maybe a year. Second one is now broken on both sides. Technician who replaced the first one said the hinge parts should have been metal instead of plastic. Whirlpool did a very poor job on the design of these lids. I'm looking to buy either a metal lid or another glass one to replace this one. For those with some degree of ingenuity, I took two pieces of stout metal (used stainless steel for mine) roughly 3" wide and 7" long. Broke them in 90 degree angles with a 3/4" bookend in the middle and slide them over the lid on both sides at the hinges. Doesn't look fancy, but the lid closes and locks. We can wash clothes again.

I purchased the Whirlpool Cabrio washer/dryer also. I must say I loved it until, I noticed the left side looking warped. Left hinge slowly cracked over a period of a few months. Then the right side did the same thing. I used it as long as I could because I knew it was out of warranty. I finally caved and bought a brand new replacement lid for around $200. It has been fine for roughly 6 months......Well I went to put a load of clothes in the dryer tonight and I'm shocked that the left side has a hairline Crack starting AGAIN!!!! I'm so upset about this :(

I purchased a Whirlpool Washer model WTW7800XW0 6 years ago.  About a year ago I noticed the lid starting to crack.  It has gotten much worse over time to the point that I knew I had to do something about it very soon.

I had a technician out to the house last week and he told me it would cost about $300 to fix ($200 for the door and $100 for labor), and given there is a problem with the lid, it could happen again. I then called Whirlpool and they said I could buy a new washer through them for a discount.

I then went on the Internet and saw a post regarding a solid lid (no window) that fits model 7800 with instructions on how to fix the lid on my washer.  You have to order the following Whirlpool parts: 1 lid (part number 8572026), 2 hinges (part number 8563964), and 4 screws (part number W10119828). Note that it does not say that this lid will fit model 7800, but the lid will fit this model. I ordered the parts from appliancepartspros.com for about $161. The parts came in a few days. You will need a Phillips head screwdriver to put on the new lid. To remove the broken lid, I also needed a hex screwdriver.

To remove the old lid, remove the screws and pull the lid towards you off of the hinges. Then remove the hinges from the washer by pulling them toward the inside of the washer. Leave the rubber gaskets (around the hinges) on the washer. On the new lid install one hinge with two screws on one side of the lid. Then insert the hinge into the gasket of the washer.  It will pop into place. With the lid up, push the second hinge through the lid into the gasket and into place in the washer. Then fasten the second hinge to the lid with 2 screws.

The new lid was really simple to install and took no more than 15 minutes. The new lid is sturdy, beautiful, and it looks like it came with the washer!  And it will never break! I was very hesitant to try this, but others said it was easy and they were right. And it was much cheaper than buying a new washer.  I'm so glad I did this!

Did exactly as Dawn P above.

Replaced the factory glass lid with a solid lid, 2 hinges, 4 screws.......10 minutes all done!

Hi, is your new lid still working? Does it lock like the glass one did? I may try this lid instead of the glass lid per your comment as well as Dawn's.  Thanks in advance for the tips!
