Defective Lid
Complaint

I purchased a Whirlpool Cabrio (Mod: Wtw7800x, Ser: c02470238) in March 2011. About a year ago the lid broke. This was replaced as it was under warranty. It is broken again. Same problem, the hinge on the right side cracked. The serviceman said the lid was defective, … again. This part costs $240.
Whirlpool Service, Bingaman ID # 3695, just told me Whirlpool would not stand behind their defective parts because I am out of warranty. While this may be legal, I find this behavior inappropriate. Whirlpool can charge exurbanite fees and not stand behind their overpriced defective parts.
Service made it sound like extended warranty was part of the price. Whirlpool can charge anything for their parts and quality is not considered. I have to wonder if building defective machines is part of Whirlpool’s business plan. I’m not going to buy from a company who believes this is an appropriate business ethic.

How about a class action?
I had a technician out to the house last week and he told me it would cost about $300 to fix ($200 for the door and $100 for labor), and given there is a problem with the lid, it could happen again. I then called Whirlpool and they said I could buy a new washer through them for a discount.
I then went on the Internet and saw a post regarding a solid lid (no window) that fits model 7800 with instructions on how to fix the lid on my washer. You have to order the following Whirlpool parts: 1 lid (part number 8572026), 2 hinges (part number 8563964), and 4 screws (part number W10119828). Note that it does not say that this lid will fit model 7800, but the lid will fit this model. I ordered the parts from appliancepartspros.com for about $161. The parts came in a few days. You will need a Phillips head screwdriver to put on the new lid. To remove the broken lid, I also needed a hex screwdriver.
To remove the old lid, remove the screws and pull the lid towards you off of the hinges. Then remove the hinges from the washer by pulling them toward the inside of the washer. Leave the rubber gaskets (around the hinges) on the washer. On the new lid install one hinge with two screws on one side of the lid. Then insert the hinge into the gasket of the washer. It will pop into place. With the lid up, push the second hinge through the lid into the gasket and into place in the washer. Then fasten the second hinge to the lid with 2 screws.
The new lid was really simple to install and took no more than 15 minutes. The new lid is sturdy, beautiful, and it looks like it came with the washer! And it will never break! I was very hesitant to try this, but others said it was easy and they were right. And it was much cheaper than buying a new washer. I'm so glad I did this!
Replaced the factory glass lid with a solid lid, 2 hinges, 4 screws.......10 minutes all done!
