I purchased a Whirlpool Cabrio (Mod:  Wtw7800x, Ser: c02470238) in March 2011.  About a year ago the lid broke.  This was replaced as it was under warranty.  It is broken again.  Same problem, the hinge on the right side cracked.  The serviceman said the lid was defective, … again.  This part costs $240.

Whirlpool Service, Bingaman ID # 3695, just told me Whirlpool would not stand behind their defective parts because I am out of warranty.  While this may be legal, I find this behavior inappropriate.  Whirlpool can charge exurbanite fees and not stand behind their overpriced defective parts.

Service made it sound like extended warranty was part of the price.  Whirlpool can charge anything for their parts and quality is not considered.  I have to wonder if building defective machines is part of Whirlpool’s business plan.  I’m not going to buy from a company who believes this is an appropriate business ethic.

I'm having the same problem as other commenters with the machine's original lid. I'm installing a replacement today and hoping that it will last for the remaining life of the machine (it's four years old now). Somehow, I'm not optimistic.

I have replaced the washer lid on the whirlpool  five times in the past 2 years.  It is cracked again and will not operate.  The company is no help and I would never buy whirlpool again!

Mine is 3 years old and same problem.. The spring hinge is much to strong for the plastic that holds it. So what i did to correct this problem. I grind down the bracket to a round shape instead of square. This relieved all the pressure  on the lid. Just have to be careful when closing because it will slam. But I didn't even need to replace top. Once I relieved the pressure the lid held its normal shape.

To do this take out all 4 bolts on back sides of lid.
open lid and pull straight up.
    remove L brackets
grind down so they spin freely.
replace , put screws back and Bam you just fixed there defect that they wont admit to!!

Cabrio 7800 is the worst washing machine we have ever owned!! Purchased in 2011 and on the fourth broken lid that is caused from a hinge spring tension design. Experienced premature tub bearing failure along with weak tub suspension spring failures. Poor wash quality, constant unbalance conditions causing wasted water and electricity useage. ECO.?Cabinet has convex dents from extreme off balance conditions with properly loaded wash. Contacted Whirlpool CSRs on several occasions and no assist offered. Will never purchase another Whirlpool Product.
    Do Not Purchase Whirlpool Junk!

On my fourth Cabrio WTW7800XWO lid. Right side hinge/lid cracked, glass protruding due to faulty hinge spring design. Purchased 3/04/11.Whirlpool would not acknowledge any responsibility for this obvious design problem.Do not recommend future purchases of any Whirlpool Consumer Products!

I am having same problem as others with washer lid. Whirlpool customer service says they've not received complaint calls. So I will be switching brands of appliances!!! Any ideas?

    Frustrated!
Just got off the phone with Whirlpool. What a bunch a crooks. Our Cabrio WTW8800YC lid broke and they refused to give any relief. To pay more than 30% of the value of the machine to get a new lid is crazy. Please never buy Whirlpool again, people. These people are crooks. Their customer service reps are clearly trained to say "I have never had a call on that problem. There is no known recall." What a bunch of crap.

Same story.  Not worth investing in fixing it if it is just going to break again. Thanks Whirlpool

I bought my washer at a really good price and asked the salesman what was wrong with it and I was told that appliances go on sale all the time.  The lid is definitely defective, but the rest of washer works fine. I bought mine in 2011 and got the extended warranty. The warranty is not good as long as the washer is working, however, once it cracks enough and won't lock and won't work, my warranty covers a replacement lid. I think I'm on my 5th? now.  Whirlpool should definitely be making good on this one and I'm sure they know that. Good luck everyone!

Same issue here, hinge cracked on both sides. Glass has separated from the lid. There is no sense is buying a replacement that is clearly designed to fail.

Mine broke as well after two replacement lids one under warranty, the other on me.  I discovered if I took a wooden clothes pin apart and took the metal paper clamps and clamped the clothes to the top of the lid it was supported almost like new.   while it's not the most attractive look it works and it supported the lid. However it does throws the weight off balance on the lid and I have to hold it up so it won't fall down.  But at least it works!

I have the same problem. My first lid cracked 1 day after my warranty expired. Whirlpool would not replace. I bought a new lid, replaced it, now less than 5 months this one has cracked on the right side as the other ones did and the glass is sticking up. Over $400 spent on lids. You would think whirlpool would have a recall because as many complaints they have received it is a serious problem with these lids. Never again will I purchase anything with whirlpool name on it.

Same story.  Bought the washer, and within 2 years the plastic frame for the lid broke.  Called both Whirlpool and Lowe's, and was told I had abused the lid. (NOT!)  Replaced the lid at a cost of almost $200.  New lid's frame is cracking.  I've filed a complaint with our Attorney General's office.

Same story, terrible customer service, bought new cambrio, lid frame near hinges cracked, I replaced for $250 thinking maybe my kids did something, broke again, now I saw on line, this was their design flaw. Customer service unhelpful, rude, and still after so many years of same customer problem, denying that their is anything wrong. Terrible company, should be a law suit!!!
