We attended their presentation and after some calculation decided to pay for the membership which was $4990. We wanted to update our kitchen and bathroom cabinets, as well as bedroom furniture. We put down about $1000, and the rest was financed through their lender Beta Finance.

A month later we started planning our purchases and realized we were about to pay more by buying through them than we would otherwise. What the don't tell you on their presentation is that while you save about 10% on furniture they add 8 % handling charge in addition to 7% tax, and that doesn't include shipping.

I am now trying to get our membership money back. Do not become a member! Buy from other stores.

Whoops, that's embarrassing.  You're right, this is ComplaintWire.
I did some digging around yesterday and came across several articles on other complaint sites..
A very insightful one regarded a previous DB attorney hired to shut down the DB complaint sites but legally they cannot.  Maybe DB can buy some of them off.
I'll go back and look for it, about that particular case & attorney.  It was something about him filing letters to cease and desist these complaint sites because of the wordage used of DB being described as detestable, rip-off artists, scammy, etc.  Those words are not deflamatory or illegal, just opinions.  It was a good read.  So all in all I feel assured that this site will remain to be seen.

Hi we just purchase a contract with DB in August 2010 and we was not told about a 3 day to cancel. I did find this out until I got my contract in September when they was waiting for the rest of our money to put down. We didn't have all our money to put down the 299.00 they asked for so they cut the price and said we could put down 199.00 instead. I told them that I didn't have the 199 now so I was asked how much could I put down today because if we didn't do it today we would miss out and want be invited back. So I gave them 100.00 that day and they debt my card for the 99.00 to come out on the 3 of September. We will have to pay 99.00 a month for 36 months at a cost of original price of 2,700 now 3,500 for financing it for us. I even told them that my husband don't make but 26,000 a year but they didn’t seem to care if he made that less money they just wanted us to sign the contract. At the time I was excited about the prices we saw and what we heard but as I sit back now I can hear the sale pitch they say they don't go. We sat in that room and listen to their sale scheme then we are sent off to other people to tell us more and even show you things you can buy for cheap prices and if you are not convinced they even push it a little more. They tell you about how they started out as a customer then went on to become a worker there and the package they started with and so on .We was showed items that was cheap on the low end products that look nice and when we was still not sure we could afford to pay or if we wanted to we was left to sit for a while because we was told that they could tell we wanted to buy in bad. So we was left for a while then  that when the manger came by and offer us the deal we could not pass up.At least we thought.....

    HI Everyone
I just found a very interesting read, hot off the press

    Sept. 30, 2010 --  Star-Telegram---- (Texas)
By: Dave Lieber--Fee dispute involves club where membership is now or never

After joining the Silver membership, member found major items cheaper in retail, & name brands in retial, that she was not allowed to buy with db
    ---Paid $3,000, complaint to the A.G. & F.T.C. & the BBB
    Asking for only $2,000 back
DB offered to upgrade to the "gold" "scam" for free
& OF COURSE, DENIED THE SCAM
& bbb gets to hide the details of any 'RESOLUTIONS'

SCAM SCAM SCAM OR SCAM , TAKE YOUR PICK!!!

    Hi Shayne,

Does your contract explicitly state that you have a 3 day cooling off period? Mine doesn't. It isn't even 12 hours later and I already want to cancel my contract. How did you do it?

    Hi Trudy,

I'm really disappointed that I came across this site 12 hours after signing an agreement with DB. I feel so sick and upset right now. I don't know if I'm going to be able to sleep for days. It hasn't even been ONE DAY and I already know 150% that I want to cancel this agreement.
My family decided to sign up for DB 3 year gold program in Toronto, Ontario earlier today after attending the 90 minute "promise" session, and there is nothing on my membership agreement that says I can or cannot cancel my contract. We looked up some prices of appliances that we had already ordered from a big name retailer and noticed that the price difference was only about $50 for each appliance. Really not worth returning the one we already ordered if it means pocketing almost $5000!
I read through most of the pages and noticed you said that the contract should be revised after March 2009. Our agreement says revised 7/8/09 but there is no mention anywhere of a cancellation or that I can and cannot cancel my agreement, no 3-day cooling off period, nothing. I'm really confused.
It says in my membership guide that DB complies with all provincial regulations and requirements regarding membership agreement cancellations. But I'm confused. The agreement itself does not explicitly state that I cannot cancel my membership., but at the very end it also says "you have not relied on any oral or written statements... different from those made in this Membership Agreement."

I'm so confused! I would like to write a registered letter on behalf of my family but after seeing this on my contract I really don't know where to start!

I should probably add that they kept insisting in the showroom that the prices shown INCLUDED shipping, but after reading through the guidebook it says otherwise! What gives?!

    thanks

I'm sorry for all the replies but I just keep finding things in this agreement... it also is written that by signing the agreement, both I and DB agree to avoid court proceedings by submitting disputes to private arbitration at BBB, but if I understand this correctly, that's in direct violation to my exercising the right to commence an action in the Superior Court of Justice. I just looked this up under the Consumer Protection Act of Ontario, under "Limitation on effect of term requiring arbitration."
Please let me know if I am on the right track?

    Hi Trudy,

Yes I'm still here. Thank you so much for the quick and prompt reply. I won't be able to send the letter today unfortunately as I am not at home but I will mail it first thing Tuesday morning and get it dated, so that it still will not be 72 hours past after I signed the contract (I joined around 3-4pm). My agreement says it was revised on 7/8/09 but includes no mention of a 3-day cooling off period as the CBC video DB president/owner claimed it would after the revision. It doesn't include anything related to a cancellation either! However, in the membership guide it claims that they abide by all rules and regulations regarding cancellation but give no specific details.
The agreement also states that I will not rely on any verbal or written terms as not outlined by the agreement that I signed, which infuriates me because there are corporate policies that they don't mention at all!!
I am going to write up a letter as soon as I get home and post the details here. Would you mind please just helping me to revise it once I do? That would be fantastic.
lastly, what other details from the protection act should I include?

    Thank you SO much Trudy,
    Fem

Trudy, I'm just about done my letter and I noticed one last section in my copy of the agreement that states "this membership agreement, the membership guide, and benefit summary constitute the entire agreement and understanding between us" and then more along the lines of in coming to my decision, I have not relied on any oral/written statements/representations etc, different from those in the agreement, membership guide and benefit summary and that no such differing oral/written statements/representation etc will have any force or effect. Does this mean I cannot incorporate the words of Bart Fesperson or Christine De Marsh in my letter?

    Mr. Art
I want to personally thank Trudy and each and every other person who has taken time out of their day to post about their problems they've had dealing with DB.  It is because of THIS website myself and my PREGNANT wife will NOT be attending an appointment this week at the DB store at Myrtle Beach, SC to listen to their sales pitch and we will NOT be strong armed into spending 5000-7000 of money that we don't have to spend in the first place.

I'm sorry that so many people on here and out there have had such terrible experiences dealing with DB and have lost so much money and /or have had their credit ruined.  You would think that more people would know just how bad DB really is but the truth to that is that MANY, MANY, people don't know and that included me and my wife.

Once again THANK YOU for shining light on the terrible company DB.  You've saved us from making the same mistake and with a little boy due Jan 5th and an older home that we are renovating we really didn't have even a hundred dollars that we could lose and not feel it.

Continue the good fight people.  Your VOICE is being heard around the United States.

    sincerely,
    Mr. Art

    HI FEM
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you
PLEASE use every bit of ammunition that you can find
IT sounds like they gave you immediate access to their prices & gave you all the company written info (that is something new, so you can't say that they didn't give you the info within the 3 day...

It would help if you can send a copy of written proof of cheaper prices elsewhere,
then you can use the CPA of ON   --Misrepresentation & fraud

the contract is written in violation of the CPA
PART 11    6. no part of the Act can limit the CONSUMER RIGHTS or remedies

              7. (1) the rights given in this Act apply, dispite any agreement or waiver to the contrary  (THE WAY THAT THE CONTRACT IS WRITTEN, FORCED YOU TO BELIEVE THAT YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS)

         11. AMBIGUITIES MUST BE INTERPRETED ITO BENEFIT THE  CONSUMER
REFER this statement to the confusion of
    1) forgetting to clarify a cooling-off period , then list your references

    2) no cancellation policy

    PART III
    14. (1)  misled
    14. (2)  1.  service claims benefits it does not have
           11.  price advantage that does not exist (ATTACH CHEAPER PRICE PROOF)
           13.      &  14.
    -----------------------------------------------------------
unconscionable rep.     15. (1)   (e) transaction one-sided in favour of company (merchant)

    Any questions, please ask...

I mentioned most of what you gave me in the letter except for part 3,13. 11,116. and 2,11. I faxed a copy of my letter tonight. Do you think I can add this in my revision and send that tomorrow morning via registered mail? Would that be okay?
Thank you so much Trudy, you've been a great help.

    HI FEM
IT is never too late to add info, but I suggest to put the new info on
a seperate page attach to the front,
with a heading  ---FOLLOW UP & ADDITIONAL INFO

This letter is a copy of the letter that I faxed to you on _______
& I also sent by registered mail on _____________

IN addition, I am including additional information from the CPA...
YOUR contract is written without a cancellation period & written biased in favour of db, which does not include any references to the many rights that I am entitled to, under the CPA of ON.

...list the references & inc. the section #...

Also, request that db only responds by mail, within 5 bus. days of the receipt of the Registered letter...
you will not discuss by phone...
