We attended their presentation and after some calculation decided to pay for the membership which was $4990. We wanted to update our kitchen and bathroom cabinets, as well as bedroom furniture. We put down about $1000, and the rest was financed through their lender Beta Finance.

A month later we started planning our purchases and realized we were about to pay more by buying through them than we would otherwise. What the don't tell you on their presentation is that while you save about 10% on furniture they add 8 % handling charge in addition to 7% tax, and that doesn't include shipping.

I am now trying to get our membership money back. Do not become a member! Buy from other stores.

I have read all of the complaints, and agree with them all. Signing up with DirectBuy was probably the most stupid thing I've done in my life, and I take the blame for believing their hype and rationalizing it to my husband. They led us to believe that we had five (5) days to reconsider, but when we tried to cancel within that time frame, they said it was a binding contract. We've never purchased a thing through them, and wish we had our $5,000 + back. According to their catalogs, they have nothing at all that was less than we could purchase in retail stores near us, and we're convinced that this is the biggest scam of consumers. Oh, and another thing:  the place is now closed and has vanished, but it doesn't stop them from sending us 'Reminders' to renew by sending them even more money. They can shove it, as far as I'm concerned. (...And that's being polite.)

I joined db in april 2011 and is may 2011 I set up an appointment to buy my kitchen cabinest only to find the business I signed up with went out of business and I would have to travel another 60 miles one way to do business with them.  I called the home office that day to try and cancel my membership only to be told that each franchise is privately owned and corporate office cannot refund my membership fee.  I have sent a letter to home office stating again that there is no way that I can use another store and still save anything.  I will have to travel over 200 miles to the nearest store just to place the order and then another 200 miles home, plus I still have to travel another 400 miles round trip to pick up the order.  I tried to dispute the purchase of the membership thru my credit card but they cannot get the money back because it is a membership and db did not go out of business so it is a "usable membership".  I checked the cancellation statement on the back of the contract and it is worded verbatum with Colorado law.  Is there any thing else I can do to get my money back?

Hi Trudy, I have been reading the site and see I am not alone.  The store that we joined went out a business 1 month after we joined.  We had an appointment to order kitchen cabinets and drove 150 miles to keep the appointment only to find out they were out of business.  I have been trying every day since to cancel our membership and have been hitting a brick wall.  I have sent registered letters and called my credit card company to dispute the purchase only to be told that since DB did not go out of business the credit card company cannot help me and the Corporate office says they are not responsible for repaying me because each store is privately owned and they are the only ones that get my money so I have to go to them but they are out of business so what do you do?  Do you have any ideas for me.  I signed up in Colorado and I live in Wyoming, the next closest store for me is over 200 miles away, one way!

If you know of anything I can do please let me know.  I need all the help I can get.  Thanks

    Hi Trudy,

Read a few of your replies.  I went for this orientation on 18th June and had no time to compare stuff and since DB let us know that we cannot comeback during the lifetime for a membership again and since it was almost closing time and we had not much time to think it over, we signed a membership and paid by credit card.  After coming home, we googled and found out all these things.  We live in texas.  We are still under the 72 hours cooling time.  Can u please let us know how exactly should we draft a letter and send it first thing tommorrow morning by registered post and also r planning on going and meeting them personally and handing them another copy.  Is it the right way to go.Thanks in advance for your reply.
