Yesterday, I received a call from a "Kevin Johnson" who claimed to be calling to collect on a debt owed on a payday loan. He spoke in a thick Indian accent. I informed him that I was filing chapter 7 bankruptcy and gave him my lawyer's information. Today, he called me back from 1 (311) 695-3764. He left a call back number on my voicemail asking to call him back on this number: 1(347) 602-4551. Then he called me back this evening and would not give me any information except to tell me that he was collecting for a payday loan from Cash Advance. I have never heard of this company, first off. Second off, he was very rude and hung up on me when I was trying to get information. He had my social security number and said he had an affidavit for my arrest. I am very concerned b/c I have read on the internet that this is a scam and this guy has my social security number. I am going through a bankruptcy and I am hoping to establish some credit and I don't need some wierd scammer with my social...

    Various other complaints below.

They appear to have been connected to a Jacksonville FL area debt collector, Ellis Crosby, that was shut down by the Florida Attorney General, but may be operating in the Jacksonville area again, or they may be running their scam out of India.  There are reports that the Jacksonville debt collector had an Indian based call center.

Many consumers report that the callers have thick Indian accents, but non-ethnic "plain American" names.  "Kevin Johnson" shows up on a number of complaints. No doubt it is an alias.  They also hide their actual location, bot to evade being shut down, and since if they were known to be just calling from India, consumers would probably just ignore them.  West Virginia Attorney General has a press release on this scam, and ABC news did a report on it.

They have a pattern of harassing calls, pretending to be attorneys, police, prosecutors, etc, threatening to immediately arrest and jail the people they call, or claiming to be about to serve the consumer with a lawsuit if they don't get paid "immediately".  They appear to have gotten some access to consumer credit information, in some cases possibly old, even paid off payday loan account records, and are using it to perpetrate this scam by extreme threats to panic people into wiring them money.

Many reports are that consumers may not even know what the alleged debt is about, and they seldom provide any information, although you couldn't trust them anyway.  This may indicate that they may not only have access ot old payday loan data, but may be "skip-tracing" and pulling credit data to use in their scam, presumably locating the wrong person, but obtaining that person's SSN and other data.  Their language attempts to be legalese, but often includes so much BS and errors in correct word choice it is laughable.

    "They have also contacted me.

I have also been contacted by these scam artists. Officer Brian and Kevin Johnson have called me and threatened me with arrest and prison time. I contacted my state attorney general, the Federal Trade Commission and the New York attorney general. <b>They gave me an address in New York and when my attorney general sent them a certified letter it turned out to be the address to a public library.</b> I have not heard from these people for months after I told them what steps I have taken and then 2 days ago I heard from their legal department again asking if I knew about the paperwork that they have filed against me. I told the Indian accented guy to bring it on because I needed to get their information to the FTC, the attorney generals of 2 states and to my lawyer so that I could sue them for their illegal activities. The guy sputtered and hemmed and hawed and said thay they would get back to me. His phone number came up as private, and he did not want my attorneys information and then hung up. They like to try and play hardball but dont like it when you play back, they are looking for sheep to prey on but dont like it if you turn out to be a wolf instead."

Contact your state Attorney General, FTC, and FBI to file complaints.  Some have reported that complaints to local police have been effective, since they are often impersonating law enforcement officers, and when local police call back, it is pretty clear they aren't going to succeed in scamming your so they stop calling.

The whole world must think we are a bunch of idiot suckers for having credit and debt collection practices so wide open to mass scamming and extortion as routine practices that anyone anywhere in the world can join in.  They are right.  We are idiots.

We had these crazies calling us too-numerous times a day-and they got very nasty when we refused to pay.  We have no payday loans out but they had my husband's ss# and our address and bank name.  If you have arrangements made with YOUR payday advance people do NOT send these freaks any money regardless of what they are threatening you with.  I contacted the BBB and the FTC and filed a complaint.  Be sure yolu have as much info as possible (ex. telephone #, persons "name" and the company name they are calling from)  We had the same guy call us at least 3 times a day for 2 weeks straight and he told my husband to go f*** his mother when he refused to pay.  They cannot put you in jail-it's against the law for any bill collector to threaten you with imprisonment.  Don't send them anymore money even if they sound convincing.  I was freaked out at first too but I did my research and I knew we hadn't gotten any type of advance so it had to be bogus.  Good luck getting them to quit calling.  I finally told them my husband died and they have stopped....for now.

A voicemail was left on my cell phone saying I was in trouble with the law and that I had 24 hours to call back. It was a 201 or 202 number area code.

Also, there was a call to my family house number saying there were from the IRs and that to call back but I looked the number up and it was a scam. I knew it was a scam because they didn't mention who in my family had to call back.

Yes, you can ask for what information they have on you but if they can't give you information on what your account number is, then you know it is a scam.

I was contacted yesterday, and I have no payday loan. They very quickly knew I couldn't be scammed, and hung up on me. I called three times, each time trying to get more information out of them, to have if I needed to make a real complaint. I am in a completely different state than the two they called from and I asked how they think they "practice law" in my state? She told me there was an affidait number and a restraining order, due to non payment, and good luck in court. All three people spoke in a very uneducated manner, which is the most politically correct way I will put it. First of all, and affidavit is basically a written "testimony". A debt collector would not have one, and they do not use restraining orders, and you don't go to jail over a civil matter. It was the most ridiculous thing I have ever encountered. The only scary part is that they did have my social security number. I have had identity theft in the past, so who knows where they got it. I have a seven year fraud alert on all my credit, and pay for credit monitoring as well, so I'm not too worried. How come these guys haven't been shut down in Florida???

Hello everyone, It appears we are all on the same situation... It all started when i went on line to try to obtain a payday loan. which if i may say, is a hasle in itself, you go through so much, you think its one application then suddenly.. BANG! all of these others are promising what they could loan... this was the biggest mistake i ever made. I should have stuck with my gut. I never trusted doing anything on line... And after that came the threatening phone calls from these thick accent indians or where ever country their from. a man left a message stating what ever unfolds on me is what i get... and when you try calling back. it states the number ur calling is not working. so next time he called i answered when i was questioning him. He had nerve to ask me if i was [***].. Go figure. anyway i cursed him out. he left another message.telling me if either myself or my attorney dont call then he is not responsible for what happens to me.. First of all, what the hell do i need an attorney for when you cant explain what i did..And last but not least  when you threaten me make sure i can understand you otherwise its pointless.. one more thing. The calls are coming from all sorts of numbers even international, thats when I knew they were STUPID, UNEDUCATED, scam fools..So dont get stressed out..tell them to learn english and learn to speak and hang up on them... Good luck, and Im not changing my number, I had that number to long...I dont negotiate with terrorist. This is America.

I unfortunately did the same thing last year.  Like you said you think it one application and then you start getting calls from all sorts of places offering to give you an unsecured loan.  Like an idiot I fell into the trap and did send money by a green dot money card, they called me back and said western union was having a problem but for me to do the same process again and the money would be added to my loan amount.  Like I said I was idiot enough to do it, only this time they said they were sending it by money gram.  I told them to cancel the deal.  They said they couldn't because it had already been sent.  I told them I have dealt with sending and receiving money from both money gram and western union enough to know that the sender can cancel the transaction and have the money returned to them.  I then refused to return any of their phone calls.  Well about 4 months after all this taking place I started getting the threatening calls saying they were an attorney for the pay day loan company and that they needed me or my attorney to contact them, if I failed to do so I could be in serious trouble.  I did call back because I didn't know what else to do.  The guy pretended to be an attorney, and gave me personal information from my application and the loan amount I was given.  I said hold on, I never received any money from your supposed client and am not paying any.  That I knew for a fact they could if it were sent receive it back from the wire transfer company they used.  I hung up.  Calls stopped for about 4 more months then they started calling again and continue to do so about every 2 months or so.  I just ignore and block the call. Then I went online and started researching the phone numbers they called from and have read complaints others have made and what they did or didn't do.  My advice to anyone from now on is if it sounds to good to be true it probably is, and if they ask you to send money by money pack, it is a scam, you never have to pay for a loan up front.  The number that called me was 712-202-5186 also one from a 312 area code.

If you have a caller ID and see a number that is like 213141406000 and then what looks like a normal number answer your phone Attorney Generals Office, Scam Department and they hang up you more than likely will get a call back from either a long number that is similar, private, unknown etc. Answer your phone again with Attorney Generals Office, Scam Department. If someone still wants to talk to you about them being the police, the justice department and you are going to jail if you don't pay your bill. tell them Thank you for making your job so easy. Let them know your conversation has been recorded and that they have stayed on the phone long enough for a trace and an official from their country is on their way over to arrest them.  They will hang up so fast and your number will be taken off their list,  NEVER do any of the following
1, DON'T talk to them about any personal information don't agree or disagree with them
        2. DON'T verify anything they tell you even if they are giving you some correct information
        3. DON'T hang up on them in frustration because they will just call you back because they know you are frustrated
        4. DON'T EV ER send them money. Never give them a credit card number to pay for whatever you tell them you owe it for
        5. DON'T promise to make payments by check and give them your routing number and bank information
        6. DON'T ever talk to them except to say Attorney Generals Office, Scam Department (even if you've already answered the phone with hello and they say: example; Is this Mr. Jones, The Jones residence or anything identifying you personally, you say no, this is the Attorney Generals Office  and they still want to talk to you tell them this conversation is being recorded, please stay on line until we have enough time to get your location from where you are calling from.  Let them know it takes a little more time to track cell phones than landlines so please continue trying to scam me.
        7. DON'T argue or agree with them

        1. DO note the date and time they called, the number they called from and if you did talk to them what their purpose for calling you.
2, DO immediately (if the office is still open or ASAP) call the Attorney Generals Office, Law Enforcement and your phone Company to give them the phone number they called from.
        3. DO go to fb, radio or TV stations, newspapers, etc to let them know about this scam so the public can be made aware of these scammers.
        4. DO have a great day because you didn't let a scammer get you and you helped others so they wouldn't stop them from having a happy day either.  Thank You

We should b allowed to track these dirty minority crooks down and feed them feet first into a chipper. These #s are apparently connected 1-386-490-8983 & 1-757-946-1151. They tag team people claiming to be med insurance, collections, and even try to sell perscription drugs over phone. SCUM!!!!   THESE TYPES OF 4X A DAY CALLERS SHOULD BE PUNNISHABLE CAPITAL OFFENCES.
