Harassing Phone Calls

Complaint

Country: United States
We have been receiving unwanted phone calls from Northland Group since 5/18/2007. They call from 1-866-380-8783 every day and ask for a person whose name I've never heard before.

It seems as someone used our address and phone number in their loan application, and Northland Group is trying to collect the debt.

For some reason people from Northland Group refuse to believe that the person they are looking for is not leaving with us, and continue their harassing calls.

I submitted my complaint to FTC, but I thought I should also let know here about this issue.

I work in an office that has been open for 3 years.  We constantly get calls for the dead beats that our number before us.  Including from Northland.    This is a small town, of course I know them.   But this isn't the right number anymore.      On separate note, my in-laws got several calls from a bill collector based on ifo ferreted out.   Unfortunately, the info was incorrect and it was the wrong "John Doe",
These groups should do a better job of verifying before harrasing.

    The Neighbor
Ok, So I just rec'd a call from the Northland Group asking for this person who happens to be my neighbor!!(He will be know as BM in this letter from here out(  Hello! Now we have not spoke to our neighbors for 3 years. (We do not get along) In any case, I asked this guy on the phone why he was calling my home and he said that BM had used me as a refernce on a job application.  I said when> That is crazy! We do not even speak.  He then said, mam do you know how we can get in touch with him. DO you know wher ehe works. I said I just told you we dont talk. How did you come to call me? I want to know.  He said he looked up my number in by the closest address BM. Then right away said, can you get him a message?  I hung up the phone and called the number right back.  Asked for a manager who got right on the phone.  I told him what just happened. I even threatned him. I told him he either give me the info I want or call I call my local news station and there tactics will be all over the news.  He claims that this BM is not even in their system and that he would take my number out of the system.  He then asked me for  my numbers and said they were not even in their system. Basically calling me a liar! WOW! This company is a trip!  Makes me wonder who is running it! SOrry ...I just had to say that with the turmoil our country is in these days!

If I receive another call, I will call my local news...as a matter of fact, I havent ruled it out yet!!

Man!! THE NERVE OF THESE PEOPLE!!! RUDE!!!  Ignorant! ANd you know the rest I want to say! But I cant :)

Trying to have dinner after a 12 hour day and phone rings.  Again Northland Group is looking for the previous owner.  Again I tell them to stop calling my house.  This has been going on for 8 years now.  I am not changing my number.  Sign me up for a class lawsuit.  I have had it with them....

    Wrong person
I keep getting pre-recorded message for a Donald Tremblay.  I have had this phone # for over 10 years and live alone.  I don't know that I even know anyone named Donald.  I did press the zero and spoke with a person, who thanked me for letting them know they had the wrong #.  Yet, I'm still getting calls.  What's up with that?

Sorry but most bill collectors are scumbags. I pay my credit card in full each month and have a credit score over 800 so I've never had direct contact with bill collectors until this group called looking for someone I've never heard of.  Now I do understand they have no way of knowing if it's the debtor or not. However if I took the time to call them back and explain the situation, I am probably not the one who owes the money. I would bet money that most bill collectors are uneducated losers who could not get  another job.

    wrong number insanity :/
I just got call from northland group - i found this site when i searched the company on the internet. It's a wrong number case for me - I spoke to two people both very nice - I told them it IS a cell phone number, and the person they are looking for I've never hear of :/
but they said they have it marked on the system as a "bad number" and shouldnt call again - but one of the debts associated with my phone has already been sold to another company.
I'm going to write a cease & desist letter to them just in case. But how can we stop them from selling my phone number along with this person's debt? So i dont get a call from them, but they just sell off the debt and i have to tell the NEXT company that calls - it's STILL a wrong number??

My brother received a call from them and has for some time. While I can believe they would have debt amounts on him I am not sure. But everyone seems to have a different experience and different viewpoint. The girl that called was EXTREMELY NICE to me and even laughed when I said I was sorry I thought my brother was home when he was not home and I guess I don't get that info from him, I POLITELY asked if she would like to leave a message and she POLITELY said that she would call back at another time. People on this complaint seem to be mostly hostile in general if this sets them off. Would you willingly do this job? No, but they do and they understand how you all think of them and how you are ALL willing to act towards them. Your right no should be harrassed when they have no business with them but threats don't work maybe just maybe CALLER ID might work, since most of us can't control them calling NO MATTER WHAT. Lawsuits won't work THEY HAVE MORE RESOURCES to take you to court with so you are screwing yourself with the bravado. What they are doing is wrong but if you were owed money and had no reassurance the other person was telling the truth would you back down and say "hey don't worry about that 2 grand you owe me its on me" Yes I am aware you don't owe them (you know that but they don't for sure). Try people!!!

    Harrassee
The proper and official way to handle these situations is to send a Certified letter with Return Receipt Requested and state in the letter that you no longer want to receive harrassing phone calls.  There are respectable legal letters available for free online.  Make sure to state that you don't want to be called any longer.

If the debt is yours, you can still do this.  It does not get rid of the debt, but it gets rid of the harrassing phone calls.  If the debt is not yours, then you should be set after doing this.  Tell them the calls should be stopped immediately upon receiving your letter, hense the Certified RRR mailing options, and from that point on if they continue to pursue, then you have the legal right to files charges against that company and sue them under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.  Hope this helps.

    same as you
I have gone on several sites that have people posting complaints about this group. I am surprised by the people here who say they are collectors but are insensitive to all of you and think you are out of line for being upset. I will tell you that as I actually have been in the collection business, it was not our policy to harass people but to talk to them calmly and professionally about their debt and try to help them out. THIS IS OUR ADVICE: pay something every month to the actual company. Even if it's $10.00. By law they can't send you to collections if you do this. If they do send you anyway, you have the law behind you when you inform the collection agency you will not deal with them. If they try to take you to small claims court and you can prove to the judge that you have been making payments consistently (a must) and they are cashing the CHECKS/Money Orders (never send cash)and that you are financially struggling (must prove this also), the judge will find in your favor and continue you with your monthly payments with the stipulation you make larger payments when you are able. Hope this helps.

Hey William, try getting a real skill, what kind of bum sits around harassing people? If it was not for people whom REALLY have a job and work for a living rather sitting on their $%#%$ making phone calls, what would you do for income??
Because I have a unique last name you losers keep calling my house for my brother (whom had the balls to create a business himself and has suffered during this recession), yet you losers keep calling my HOUSE, too stupid to put in your computer HE DOES NOT LIVE HERE...you guys are pathetic & I pray you have to go to college and pay the debt for that or learn a skill!!!

I received a call from some knucklehead at Northland Group wanting to collect a debt from the year 2001, 8 years old lol. I told the guy was he kidding me or what? That debt is time barred per the 4 year statute of limitations in my State so they can't even sue me in court to collect it. The guy tells me that I am "morally obligated" to pay. I told him in this country, legally is morally, and I'd be a fool to pay them money I didn't legally have to. Better I spend the money on a 43" widescreen TV. He kept arguing with me that I was obligated to pay and I told him he full of [***] and there was nothing they could do about it and that's that and the [***] hung up. What a nuisance this Northland Group is

Just got a letter from these Morons.  I included my attorneys name in my response back to  these bottom feeders.  They are leaches and never should be trusted ever.  Don't call them back, they will get your phone number and harrass you.  Never call them back ever ever!   only commuicate by certified mail with these leaches.  They want to fight me about a $500  debt from 10 years ago.  They are SOL.   This dog bites back.    I have gone to collection aganecies offices and stood in front of them if they harrass me.  They are parasites and weak!     Don't take it!   Sue them!

    screw northland
I will tell you right now that the verification/validation letters do not work and here is why.  In 2006 when my wife and I were at closing for our home, looking over my credit report which is flawless and had some kind of Bally's Charge on it.  WTF is this?  Called my bank, told me so I called Trans Union and they removed it.  I called Bally's total fitness and they tell me it was a mistake, the guy live in Dallas, Tx which is 400+ miles from where I live and removed it.

So in Nov of 2008 a letter comes from Ally Acceptance or some crap like that to my address but not my name. It is this other guys name.  My wife accidentally opens it and tells me I have been turned in to a collection agency from the Bally's Crap.  So I write the verify/validate this is my debt and tell them this is mistaken identity.  Never here from this company again.  The [***] did report this fradulent info to Trans Union but yet again it was removed. Let me tell you, the credit bureaus wont just remove anything unless it is not yours.

Got a letter from Northland in May 2009 which again is address to this other person.  When the debt collectors loose, they go and sale the debt to another collector.  The Ally Acceptance new it was not my debt so the sold it because of the verify/validate letter I sent them.  Sick of this crap, I call Northland, very nice to the jerk and he tries telling me that I was adopted and thats why the last names are different.  Then he wants my ssn#, tell him no way.  So I ask him whats the ssn# on this acct and wont say.  So frustrated at me, he tells me to hold on, he does a search on my name and comes back on the phone and gives me my ssn#, where i live and where I went to college and tells me that it matches.  I did not tell him the number is correct even though it was because did not know if he was lying to me.  I got a little paranoid about identity theft, but thought, no way because my credit would be trashed and this has gone on for almost 3 years.  If someone had my ssn# my credit would be trashed and all kind of accts would be open.  After some more harrasing lines from the jerk I never got a letter to my address again. Now they are sending their letters to my parents and my parents just write back on them no one by this name and puts them back in the mail.

Now I am lawyering up because tired of this crap because all these collectors do is when they fail the sale the debt. The closest Bally's gym from where I live is almost 400 miles away and never have been a member. Do not know if these jerk wads got my credit merged with the guy they are looking for or what because Northland tried putting on my Trans Union credit report under other aliases this guys name.  Had trans union already remove it but fed up with all of it so time to get my lawyer.
