Harassing Phone Calls

Complaint

We have been receiving unwanted phone calls from Northland Group since 5/18/2007. They call from 1-866-380-8783 every day and ask for a person whose name I've never heard before.

It seems as someone used our address and phone number in their loan application, and Northland Group is trying to collect the debt.

For some reason people from Northland Group refuse to believe that the person they are looking for is not leaving with us, and continue their harassing calls.

I submitted my complaint to FTC, but I thought I should also let know here about this issue.

    If it's a debt you don't owe, then that's different. Northland isn't a scam per se, they're just trying to collect on old debt that most people do owe. I do and I pay them $20 a month just to get them off my butt. I'm taking responsibility and at least doing what I can for now.

    I just got a job at Northland group what should I look out for? Any tips? Can I truly make a decent living working for them? How much can I expect to make in the first month? I was told I can get paid for overtime and work as loong as I want is that true? I took the job because I really need one and would appreciate any and all advice.

    Northland Group is th sixth agency to call for someone at my number that I have never heard of. I changed my phone number due to harrassing calls and now i got more! After my state Attorney General sends them a letter, they will quit. Then they will give the number to another agency and it will start all over again. You all suck, dead beats and collection agencies. I am someone with a perfect credit rating and you can all go to hell.

    This company is a complete scam. I received a letter earler today for a acct. in Omaha Nebraska, which I do not owe, and they just called me about a debt from a furniture store called Heliq Meyers which went bankrupt well over 10 years ago. I made all payments to the store until they closed, then I gota letter saying to send my payments to a trustee in Richmond Va. which I did until the payments started being returned as because this was no longer the trustee in charge of their Bankruptcy. I told the "lady" and I use that term loosely to never call me again. They call me and then tell me to hold on for the next agent. They kept adding interest to a $200.00 balance since they stopped contacting me, now they want some ridiculous amount for interest and fee's. I just had one complaint similiar to this taken care of by the BBB, and I will do the same against Northland Group. This persons threats do not scare me. They cannot do anything as this was their fault. I did not send them into bankruptcy, and I sent payments to the address they gave, and this acct is over 10 years old. I also just pulled my credit reports and I have very good credit with a score of well over 700. This compay searches out old debts and buys them for pennies and then they try to gouch consumers for late fee's and interest. Northland is a group of theives. I toild them do not call me ever again. If you owe a debt. deal with the original debtor, not these theives and liars

    My daughter has been recieving collector calls even after she paid the debt to the original debtor. the collection agency told her she should have paid it to them and not the original debt. I think every one who has debt only pay to the original debt and not a collection agency. as for me "yes" I have a lot of debt and I tell the collection agencies that I will pay the original debt, so the collection agency sends the info to another collection agency that they are a part of. Do these collection agencies think all of us are dumb and will not look things up on the internet?

    Rising above things such as name calling. Here is something any of us can do.
    We all know everyone likes parties, keg parties, free stuff, deals, etc.

    So here is what you do:

    Make up a hundred or so business cards or pamphlets to spread around at malls, shops, schools, telephone polls advertise something everyone wants except put the toll free number of the harassing caller in the ad. Grinz.

    Toll free numbers are free for anyone that calls them. But the numbers host pays for each and every call. Get the picture pretty soon folks like NG will have huge phone bills and will be spending way to much time working real jobs to spend time on the phone. And the pesky problem will fix it's self.
    Create another blog where all harassing callers numbers are posted. encourage others to call them and have a prize for the caller that called the most numbers. Like free pass to a local football game for two or something.

    Just a thought.  You know that little disclaimer that companies use on phone lines?  We've all heard it..."this call may be recorded for quality assurance purposes".  Here is how I handle these calls.  First time I tell the caller politely that the person they are seeking is unknown to me, please mark the number as incorrect/bad.  Next time from the same number (I have a little list posted by the phone) I open the call with, "please be aware that this call may be recorded for documentation purposes, if you do not agree to be recorded, please hang up and submit your inquiry in writing to the address you have on record."  I have a small recorder (like those used in meetings or for dictation) which also sits by the phone.  If they do not hang up (at least in my state) they are agreeing to be recorded.  Being on tape tends to prevent any abuse by either party.  IF they are abusive, I have it on tape and can turn it over to my lawyer if I choose, if they are not but keep calling..again to the lawyer this time for harassment.  However, if they are legitimate and just trying to do their job in a professional way, they will consent to the recording and are probably recording it on their end as well.  A lot just hang up and I never get anything in writing so I guess they have a different address in their records or are not legit.  It seems to work most of the time.

    I keep getting calls from this company. I have turned the ringer off all of my phones. I finally answered the phone to stop the calls.  I got a message to hold for the next available associate. I heard click click click then a dial tone.  I called back and they wanted to talk to my son, who, by the way owes no one NOTHING...all his bills are paid off.  When I asked them to help me out as to what they were calling about, ie: credit card, etc...I was told that they couldn't give me that information and to have him call back.  they also said they have been sending letters to my address since December, I told them that I collect our mail every night when I get home from work and I have NEVER seen a letter from them, he told me he couldn't listen to me. I told my son to call them back and tell them that he is going to call our local police department and phone carrier and have the cited for harrassment they should stop calling...do NOT under any circumstances give them any personal information...becauese they can bite me!

    I, too, am being harrassed by NORTHLAND for the past month or so.  They call at all hours, early morning late evening, during the day. I have not answered the phone as the number comes as 1-800-SERVICE, and of course they don't leave a message. My son happened to be here yesterday and as I was telling him of this, they called, and he answered it. They identified themselves as NORTHLAND DEBT COLLECTION AGENCY and said they were trying to collect a debt, but wouldn't say what. They asked for my SSN and address. Of course, he didn't give it to them.  I do not have a debt, but now don't know what to do about this.

    Former Collector
    After reading this thread, I have to ask all the collectors that commented on here how familiar they are with the FDCPA. For those of you that do not know what this is, it is the Fair Debt Collection Practice Act. For the collectors as well as the people being harassed, here is an excerpt from the FDCPA that you all can take to heart. If you want to read more, visit http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf. If you notice #1, I can assure you after 10 years of working in collections and 5 of them spent running a collections floor, I know that this policy is not held to strict standards by collectors.

    804. Acquisition of location information
    Any debt collector communicating with any person other than the consumer for the purpose of acquiring location information about the consumer shall—

    (1) identify himself, state that he is confirming or correcting location information concerning the consumer, and, only if expressly requested, identify his employer;

    (2) not state that such consumer owes any debt;

    (3) not communicate with any such person more than once unless requested to do so by such person or unless the debt collector reasonably believes that the earlier response of such person is erroneous or incomplete and that such person now has correct or complete location information;

    (4) not communicate by post card;

    (5) not use any language or symbol on any envelope or in the contents of any communication effected by the mails or telegram that indicates that the debt collector is in the debt collection business or that the communication relates to the collection of a debt; and

    (6) after the debt collector knows the consumer is represented by an attorney with regard to the subject debt and has knowledge of, or can readily ascertain, such attorney’s name and address, not communicate with any person other than that attorney, unless the attorney fails to respond within a reasonable period of time to the communication from the debt collector.

    Yes, most Bill collectors ARE a**holes, and are also usually people who couldn't get a better job as an accountant. Most collectors have a short life span on the job, due to the nature of their managers, who are the bigger A**holes. But, it's all about money. If you owe someone, pay them. If you can't pay them, stay in touch with them. Avoid getting into the collection cycle.

    shame on them
    To those that don't know the way this works, but the law protects you from collection agencies.  Once you have heard from a collection agency and have spoken with them they are required to send you a letter saying you owe them in return you send them a letter tellin them that you dispute this bill and that you require proof that they have the right to collect and that you owe this bill.

    Even if you owe something that doesn't mean you owe it to that collection agency.  There is abundant info on the internet out lining the laws on collection agencies.

    If the collection agency continues to harrass you after they have recieved your letter then you have the right to sue them and you can get $500.00 dollars.

    My husband and I had a collection agency that was trying to collect on a debt that we had paid off ages before they contacted us and they not only harrassed us but they called family and neighbors.  It was aggrivating but soon was resolved, also these collection agencies can get sued for putting any incorrect info on your credit report without proof to you first.

    Hope this was helpful.  There are letters on the internet that you can copy and send to these vulchers when necessary. You never want to pay a collection agency before you are sure they have the legal documentation to collect the debt.  After you pay them they can turn around and sell your debt to someone else and the cycle starts again.

    They called me at my work, and never told me who they were, all they wanted to do was to verify my date of birth.  I told them that I wasn't going to verify anything because they wouldn't tell me who they were.  And were very rude.  then they hung up on me.

    If you pay these scumbags anything, the debt will stay on your credit report for an additional 7 years. This will also restart the statute of limitations, and they can take you to court.

    I had this # on my phone today - 702-410-6512. I tried a Reverse phone search and was not able to get a name.  I called the # and it was answered by "Northland Group" actually it was an answering machine.  I am on the west coast and it is still within business hours? Could this possibly be the same Group as the rest of this site is about? How can I stop this caller without calling the phone company and having the expense of putting a block on? Suggestions are welcome.

    All of you act like you know what you're talking about. If one of you could even slightly get the right picture, you would understand. Non-compliant debt collectors do exist, there is no doubt about it. Not all of us are that way. Some of us actually want to help families and persons that ARE willing to work with us. And those that don't, well they can continue living with their excuses of why they cant find even $20 to start paying off the money that they at one point SPENT, for as long as they please. Dealing with the original debtor is an absolutely RIDICULOUS thing to do. Seeing as the lender will NOT take away interest, nor will they offer settlements. Collection companies on the other hand, can. It is in everyone's best interest to work with the company that their account has been placed in. Before you write messages such as these, please mind the fact that you have no idea what you're talking about, and that you are going based solely off of facts you have heard through the media.
