Harassing Phone Calls

Complaint

We have been receiving unwanted phone calls from Northland Group since 5/18/2007. They call from 1-866-380-8783 every day and ask for a person whose name I've never heard before.

It seems as someone used our address and phone number in their loan application, and Northland Group is trying to collect the debt.

For some reason people from Northland Group refuse to believe that the person they are looking for is not leaving with us, and continue their harassing calls.

I submitted my complaint to FTC, but I thought I should also let know here about this issue.

If there is no contract, there is no case. No debt collection agency has a contract with anyone, so by definition, no one has a debt with a debt collection agency. The original obligation is to the creditor in which the contract was signed, not a third party agency who you have no contract with.

I have no debts and just had a couple of huge arguments with reps from Northland because they keep calling my number asking for someone else and I've had it. The rep was so incredibly rude and belligerent I had to keep cutting him off saying I didn't want to speak to him anymore and to just get a manager. They said I obviously know this person and they will keep calling my number until this person gets in touch with them. For the comments addressing the "foreign rep" issue, these guys all had an American accent and were just as rude and arrogant and obnoxious as the foreign ones someone complained about in this thread. This is clearly a company issue, which, by the way, is in Minneapolis, MN, and nothing to do with nationality. They have no decency whatsoever, they interrupt, raise their voice and talk over you and they have no mercy. I finally managed to be put through to a manager called Cassandra, who was decent enough and assured me they would take my number off their "file" and said the reps have no right to keep calling if they are asked not to. We'll see what happens...

They have sent me bills for an account I have not had for almost 20 years.  From what I see these idiots are bogus and are guilty of fraud!!!!  Innocent people are being sought out and paying off bills they think they owe.  I've googled and found that there are many people that are being targeted.  These people are taking peoples money just by sending letters and calling harrassing people to death!  Do not pay these slime bags.......they are slime bags and are guilty of fraud as far as I'm concerned.  I'm contacting a lawyer and sending out a certified letter telling them to 'take a hike' and if they call or send another letter they will owe me money.  Again, what they are doing is against the law.

The Northland Group was founded in 1982.  They provide business process outsourcing services focused on accounts receivable management and collection services for national credit grantors, debt buyers, and student loan lenders and servicers.

The Northland Group professes to be a recognized leader in late stage receivables management as a result of their unique collection strategies, using highly-trained staff and years of experience. They claim that proven performance helps their business members (their customers) increase profitability and dramatically improve recovery rates while preserving the relationship with the "consumer" (meaning, the people they dun).

Their website is located at http://www.northlandgroup.com/.

We've been fighting with collection agencies for a couple of years now. It seems that some idiot at one of the credit card companies issued a card in the name of my husbands dead father back in 2002. His dad died in 1986. We tell this to the company calling and they stop calling but then they must pass the debt to another collection company and the whole thing starts all over again. Plus each company get a little harder to work with. I don't see why I should be put out because some moron issued a card to a dead man.

Northland Group are a bunch of f**king a**holes. I got this letter stating that I owe them money for a debt when I settled it with the Actual collection agency for that company! You guys are a bunch of low life scam artists trying to suck money out of honest people! I know someone who paid you guys the debt your company said they owed. They got a confirmation number and everything to find out that the Actual Collections Company was trying to collect and that they had no clue or proof that it was sent to you! And needless to say that they had to fork out the SAME AMOUNT to the actual company!!! I swear if you keep contacting me even though I've sent you letters and I get threatening message I WILL SUE YOU! EVERYONE read the Laws for your state. Saw whatever threatening message or fraud statement that they might leave you because you can take it to court or collections if you are summoned and your debt will be thrown out because of it and they will be fined ALOT!!!!!!!!

THE FAIR DEBT COLLECTION PRACTICES ACT

    (1) The use or threat of use of violence or other criminal means to harm the physical person, reputation, or property of any person.

    (2) The use of obscene or profane language or language the natural consequence of which is to abuse the hearer or reader.

    (3) The publication of a list of consumers who allegedly refuse to pay debts, except to a consumer reporting agency or to persons meeting the requirements of section 603(f) or 604(3)1 of this Act.

    (4) The advertisement for sale of any debt to coerce payment of the debt.

    (5) Causing a telephone to ring or engaging any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with intent to annoy, abuse, or harass any person at the called number.

    To Rachelle,
Well put, you even took the time to spell check. The fact that the Northland Group has been around for almost 30 years speaks to the way we conduct business and collect on debt from those who don't want to pay or simply can't. I have had people actually thank me for the way that they have been treated throughout our process. Stop the dramatics and act like an adult.

To callaway, above, typically we're open 8-2 on Saturdays, except for the last Saturday of the month, when it is 8-5.

hey! I have never, ever, bought anything from a company called Bradford Exchange, don't use credit cards, but yet, your crummy company keeps having some East Indian people call me, I can't barely understand a word they say, but they claim I owe this Bradford Exchange $186.00! Seriously? lol Good luck with that.
I have asked them to send me a bill, which they have not done, by law, you have to send out a bill within 30 days of calling an alleged debtor, a year later, still no bill.
I just keep a record of every call, when I get enough of them, with no written communication, calling my atty, suing another collection agency and winning.
For those of you in Texas call Dean Malone, he works on contingency and specializes in collection agency abuse. http://www.deanmalone.com/
NCO paid me $30,000 in a harrassment suit for a bill I didn't owe.
Dean Malone recently won a multi million $ lawsuit against a collection agency for abusive practices, it's all on his website.
It doesn't matter if you owe a bill or not, collectors are not allowed to harrass you.
Look up your state's fair trade and practices laws, arm yourself with info.
Most states have a debt time limit, in Texas it's 4 years, after 4 years, they can't take you to court, they can still try to collect, but, if they can't take you to court, kinda pointless.

If it has been that long check out this link about zombie debt. http://www.creditinfocenter.com/forms/sampleletter20.shtml

Send it off to them certified.  If they continue to harass you or report this on your credit you can sue them under federal law in small claims court for $1000.00 per occurrence, payable to you.

Most of them have been sued under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act before and know they can be held liable for their actions and the harassment will stop.  If not sue them and get paid for your trouble

Northland has been trying to collect a debt that IS NOT OURS for about three years now.  Someone calls us, writes us letters, etc., then, no longer works there (what an awful job), then a new person comes and calls us again. This just happened AGAIN this a.m.  I am now sending a certified letter today.  Phone calls, and letters, for debts that are not yours is a clear violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.  There is no need to hire an attorney!  Write a letter stating this, to the company, make sure it's certified, and they cannot contact you any more.  www.creditcards.com has some great letters to follow.  Scroll above and follow the advice of Harrassee, thanks!  :)

These people keep calling me, today they called me twice in one hour, so I called them back on my cell phone, didn't list my number but they have it now, don't know how they did but they did.
    Spoke to one girl could not understand her, so she hung up on me, I called back spoke to a Stanley somebody, I told him to quit calling me, he said are you Tina Rhodes? I said I am not, and every time you call I am putting a trace on you, he said and what can the phone company do, I said turn it over to the local police, this punk said, I have told you I took your phone number off the list, what more do you want. So then I called the Northland Group; here is how that went;
Tina Rhodes is who they are asking for spoke to Stanley somebody, so I called the Northland Group, spoke to a Pat somebody, could barely hear him, he said well if you cannot hear me maybe you had better call back, I said no I will not call back, I am telling you now, every time you call I am tracing you, and there is nobody here by this name, stop calling me. I am still not satisfied, he said he was going to review the tapes to see who it was, they got my cell phone number don’t know how but they did, hope they do not call it. September 1, 2011 1:36
I am very angry that I was stupid enough to use my cell phone number, now what I am going to do is file a complaint with the BBB in Minnesota.
Here is their info if you want to stop them PLEASE TAKE ACTION AGAINST THEM WITH THE BBB IN MN.

These people have been calling for a number of years to my phone number for a person I have NEVER even heard of.  I have had the same phone number for 12 years, yet I repeatedly get calls for some stranger.  I have spoken with these folks and others and told them I do not know and I have never met the person they are looking for.  Still they call.

I am tired of being harrassed over someone else's debts, which probably passed the point of collection a decade ago.

They must be stupid to use a phone number that must be 13 years old!!!
