From Kim

Hey Moron's.. Some of you are really stressed out about a few phone calls.

I used to work for iQor Canada Ltd. (formally CBCL) for about a year.
Here's the deal:

It IS a real company and they are not scamming anyone for personal info. What happens is numbers get reassigned sometimes as quickly as 4 months. Your best bet is to call the number back (iQor has several different offices for a total of well over 25 numbers in total - prob a load more, I just know about 25 or so.) Give them your number (they need this in order to trace where it is they are calling - they cannot remove your number if you do not tell them what number it is they are dialing seeing as how there are over a million in each of their databases). They will then use your number to bring up an account - if the name on the account is not yours, tell them that the number has been reassigned to you and that you would like it to be removed. They WILL do so and are required by law to remove ANY number (even if it is yours) if you tell them that you do not want any more calls agian. If the account that they find Is in fact in your name, then they have a collection issue with you. IF you refuse to cooperate and the account is yours, then they will follow up and look for their money, etc. If you honestly feel that you do not owe this money but all the info is yours, they will help you out with figuring out how to fraud account was opened.

So we are all Moron's?
WELL THANKS KIM. We can sure tell you used to work for iQor Canada Ltd. (formally CBCL) for about a year. But why only a year? Were you not rude enough to us consumers? Did you quit or get laid off?

Kelsey, thankfully their are good collections people like yourself out there.unfortunately iqor is a scam because, they record your payments but fail to release any form of documents; seeing as is has been two+ weeks and I am still waiting on this letter, meanwhile I have contacted them multiple times. I honestly hope they and their parent company recieve a class-action lawsuit very soon. Thank you again for the head up, I will be making sure no one else I know suffers the same b.s. run-around.

I now have the pleasure of dealing with this iQor company. They demand that I pay; yet they are unwilling to work with my already set budget.
I have dealt with many collection agencies and after being forced to call iQor's US based office before getting the correct number for the canadian office. I still was not talking to the correct person. They put a manager on the phone and he had to walk from another office to the desk of the woman who had answered the call.

The letter that I got in the mail had their incorrect phone number on in. The manager told me to fax the letter to him. (Because everyone in the world owns a fax mechine)

The first time I got a call from the person he only provided me with his first name, he did not inform me as to the company he was calling on behalf of. I have never heard of CBCL and from what I've read in a news article from CBC news, it sounds as though the employees are just told. "get people to pay anyway you can"

The are very rude and uprofessional.

The advice that I can give those stuggling with debt is KNOW YOUR BUDGET. You are the one that knows where your money is going and what your bring home pay is. Stick to what you know you can pay and if you can deal with the company you got the service from, that company could be more understanding when making payment arangements.

No-one stuck up about a few phone calls.   However some people do not like being call morons, motherf..ers, deadbeats, and the like.  Many your not one of those abusive IQOR employees but then you seem to be calling people morons.   By the way, the Alberta courts, the Quebec courts, the Halton Police, the Toronto Police, and the OPP all have very serious doubt about the legitimacy of IQOR business.

    Folks
If indeed it is a collection and you do owe the money then here is what you do and the tricks in dealing with the calls if you do answer.
    1.  Always maintain a calm voice and when they get more aggressive then lower your voice.

    2.  Stand up when your talking to them   3. If you have no money to pay simply state it to them and say nothing more..... DO NOT SPEAK UNLESS BEING SPOKEN TO and when possible use YES and NO answers.  4.  Do not verify whom you are if you can't pay because if it is a collection the damage has already negatively affected your credit with an R9 rating on that account.  There is nothing more they can do other than call you.  They can't force you but what they do know is that one day you will have to settle because you'll be back on your feet and you will want to fix your credit.  One day they will get their money but be sure that it is on your terms.  5.  Always negotiate a settlement at not more than 50 cents on the dollar.  Start at 10 cents and it settle somewhere between there and 50 cents.  6.  Do not forward funds until they give you a letter which confirms a date for the payment, an amount agreed and their promise to report paid and settled in full on that date to the reporting agencies of Equifax and TransUnion.  Once you have that letter and you'll have to be tough on this issue as they won't want to do this because its more work but you must demand it.  7.  Pull your credit 60 days later to confirm they have reported as per the letter and if they haven't nail them to the wall,,, be very aggressive with them in your pursuit of them.
This is an industry that is lower than a snakes belly in wagon rut and they only know intimidation so do not give them ammunition.  and do not think your saving your credit by listening to their BS about paying quickly and it won't affect your affect...BS...the fact that they are calling already means the bad debt has been recorded on your credit.  Its a chicken then egg normal process not the other way around.
    8.  In rare ocasions one may have to change the phone number but as a rule collection companies are chasing small debts such as conditional sale contracts, cell phones bills, gas and hydro collections, etc and in many cases the credit grantor has sold the debt to these companies at 10 - 20 cents on the dollar.  For example, the local cell company might have 1m in unpaid contracts and its well beyond 90 days they'll simply write off the debt and sell the outstanding for 10- 20 cents of 100K on a 1 million.  They then try to collect 100 cents  but reality is they only collect somewhere in the 30 50 cents and those consumers that do not understand the game pay in full.
    9.  The last thing to remember is these employees are generally working at a job that empowers them .  They get to be aggressive to normal hard working folks and yet their own credit affairs are are mess - I generalize.  These jobs do not pay well and suck in the moral department.  Do not expect your favorite Auntie or Uncle on the other end of the line.

I started receiving these calls a month ago from Iqor.  Frankly, it wasn't until the 4th call that I even knew the name of the company.  The first three people that called barely spoke English.

They're claiming that I owe $73.35.  I asked what for.  They couldn't tell me.  I then asked them to send me a detailed invoice outlining what I owe this money for, as I don't recall it.  They said they would.  The calls are daily, and every day it's a new caller, and I have to explain once again that I'm not paying anything until I know what the debt is for, and if they can't tell me, I won't be paying, so send a detailed invoice outlining what this payment is for.

Well, a month later, and multiple calls later, I finally received the letter.  It doesn't outline a darn thing.  It basically says that my son owes $20 (he's 14, doesn't have a cell phone, cannot legally sign a contract, so how is he responsible for $20 to anyone), and I owe $53.35 (I also don't have a cell phone, have no parking tickets, and all the bills are in my husbands name, so what's this debt for?).  The name of the company I supposedly owe to is not listed.  In other words, I have no idea what this supposed debt is for.

The first time they called I wasn't willing to give out the info he asked for (social insurance number, credit card number, birth date, address), and I told him that I wouldn't, that there's no way for me to know that this isn't someone trying to steal my identity, and I'm not stupid enough to give him all the info he'd need to do so.  He got mad at me, yelled at me.  I hung up.

I still have no idea what this supposed debt is for, and until they can tell me who I supposedly owe this money to, I'm not paying.  Especially since they brought my 14 year old son into this as well, and he's never had a contract with anyone.

I just got my first call from IQOR Canada today. Had never heard of them before. They were calling me about my bank credit card which went into arrears last year and I was unable to repay the bank because I had lost my job.

So he asked me if I was me, I said yes - only so that I could find out who this fellow was. Anyone who asks for me without saying who they are first, is automatically a debt collector!!!

Since I am unable to pay because I have no job,  that is what I tell any and all debt collectors who call me - and believe me they do call. I have 2 large debts that are in collections - one bank credit card and the other is a store credit card. Since my credit rating is already in the toilet, (R9) I no longer bother to try and restore it, and I am not going to bust my guts trying to repay them.

So I told this new guy from Iqor that I dont have a job, no income, and cannot pay.  He asked me how was I supporting myself. I said I had a family but he didnt need to know any details.

Every other debt collector has insisted that I verify my address and DOB with them - which I always refuse to do.

This bloke from IQOR gave me my address and asked me to verify my postal code - which I did since anyone can finds that in a reverse phone lookup online. Then he said - I see you had a birthday last month - which is also correct, and yes I confirmed that - he did not give me the exact date, nor did I give him any exact date.

Most unusual - but it sure was a nice change.

Oh and I asked him about the letter I should have received. He said they had sent that out last week. OK but its not uncommon for letters to take 8 to 10 days just to get across town these days!!!  Anyways, I have not yet received it, but I am sure it is coming.

He told me all about my student loan and about the business we run from my home address. I see their skip tracers are clearly busy!!!!

He was asking if we could meet each other half way and come to some agreement. I said NO - because I have no job and no income and no money and I cannot pay. Its as simple as that. Eventually I told him to put me down as UNCOOPERATIVE and to not call me again, and I hung up.

Now compare this to the other new debt collection agency who called me last week. Again a new agency, this time covering my store credit card. He was making threats right from the beginning.

He used threats such as  - You have 24 hours to call me back or we will pursue this further. Govern yourself accordingly. He also said - Remember we are recording everything you say.

Again I refused to verify my address and DOB, and I also told him to put me down as uncooperative and hung up.

My debts dont last long with the agencies. They seem to be being moved from one place to another every few months or so. Sooner or later the banks are going to run out of Canadian agencies, and either they stop, or the whole cycle starts all over again.

If the bank and the store have written my debt off because I cant pay, then why do they even bother to continue to farm these out to the agencies for mere pennies on the dollar?

Speaking of which - the fellow from IQOR actually told me today that its only agencies in the USA buy debts for pennies on the dollar - that doesnt happen in Canada. Yeah right I scoffed.

But there is a comment on this thread that says that agencies only get a percentage of the amount when it is collected - I assume the remainder of it stays with the bank? Is this true?

I hope it is done this way, now. so that agencies can no longer try and collect a second or third time on a debt that has already been paid once.

I make a written record of all calls I get from any and all debt collectors.
