We attended their presentation and after some calculation decided to pay for the membership which was $4990. We wanted to update our kitchen and bathroom cabinets, as well as bedroom furniture. We put down about $1000, and the rest was financed through their lender Beta Finance.

A month later we started planning our purchases and realized we were about to pay more by buying through them than we would otherwise. What the don't tell you on their presentation is that while you save about 10% on furniture they add 8 % handling charge in addition to 7% tax, and that doesn't include shipping.

I am now trying to get our membership money back. Do not become a member! Buy from other stores.

duped2, did you not go on the second day with your friends when you dropped off the cancellation letter that your friends helped you write? If they don't accept your story maybe the judge will.

Trudys advice is good but you can't be reasonable with unreasonable people.

...again, Jack, as usual, why do you not have anything constructive to say
IF anyone has specific helpful advice, please feel free,
but it really defeats the purpose by saying that anyone else's advice is good, but...and then you make another comment that is not helpful,

BTW, duped 2 did not try to cancel within the 3 days...
& I have nothing but continue to encourage duped, not to give up fighting

    HI SARA
I Cannot recall if you actually inc. where you live,
but, no matter what, that is absolutely an intollerable fee,
it's extortion, you could try to get that in writing,
there is nothing in the contract allowing for any fee at all
$1,250 dollars for nothing, how long would that take for you to make,
    if you invested it

Sara, missed part of your question, do not waste time with BBB
but, do not wait to follow-up,
FAX db owner, to confirm the offer made to you, for proof
FAX c.c. co. state the date & time & name of person you spoke to,
& CONFIRM the info that you were told
...if it's not in writing , they can change the story & say that you misunderstood
    Good Luck!!!!!!

What I learned is to ask questions about what's binding in a contract I'm signing, what am I promised to get for the membership and ask!!! How do I cancel if I decide not to keep the membership - I know, it's gotta be within those precious 3 days...

If only I had acted on how much I seriously doubted signing that damn I would have canceled it right away.

Sorry folks, once you sign that paper and wait till after 3 days you're in the same boat as the rest of us victims. The membership is not worth the sign up fee. It's outrageous.

    Frustrated
    Hi Trudy

Unfortunately, I too found out about this site after my Mum and I signed the contract with Directbuy.

My Dad, Mum and I went for a two hour presentation that had my Dad walking out stating that it sounded too good to be true.  My Mum and I stayed back and decided to think this over.  With all the renovations we had to do on the house, this might be a great option especially seeing some examples of the price cuts.  Mum and I then decided we had to talk this over with the rest of the family and do some further research into this company (which goes by four other names too - I found out later when I went to the small claims court to do some research about getting out of the contract)- as it did sound too good to be true.  We were about to leave the premises when the representative Patrick (who had disappeared for quite some time showed up and gave Mum and I a big speel of how if we didn't sign up today we will not be allowed back to any Directbuy ever again.
Well, with the renovations on our mind and the amount of money we thought we could save we signed.  I put down $182.20 as I couldn't put anything else down at the time.  The total amount is $5239.50.  The membership agreement term is for three years at the Directbuy of Greater Vancouver (Coquitlam, BC).  One hundred and eighty two dollars and twenty cents is debited from my account every month. ($182.20).  To think that we have not bought a single item from this company and are losing money and sleep over this is really ridicules.  I'm currently the only one in my family working full time trying to support a family of six.  I cannot keep paying in order for Directbuy to fund their company.
I should mention that I did try different lanes in order to get out of the contract (ie.  meeting with my family lawyer who advised me to take it to small claims court, and even contacting Directbuy by email (I refuse to do anything over the phone) I did get a reply from the Service Manager of the Directbuy of Greater Vancouver (Coquitlam, BC) "I received your email regarding the cancellation of your membership.  Unfortunately memberships are non-cancelable.  If you have any questions please contact me directly.  Thanks" received January 18, 2011)

I'm really at a loss for what to do next in order to get out of the contract could you please assist?  Thank you.

    To Jack, the DB owner
You're on the wrong site, take your meds, &
leave those of us alone, who are trying to get help,
I guess you'd tell me to leave your disabled grandma on the street, too
& just walk over her, if she fell
like, you are going to stop any one of us

OMG, Jack, I JUST FIGURED OUT WHO YOU ARE!
you will be receiving little notes of "admiration" at the most interesting places around you
remember that what goes around, comes around
being mean to innocent people who have been robbed of their hard earned money & conning them, the way that you have,
    has consequences

Man, I am glad I stumbled here.  I received a settlement notice from DB, apparently, it was sent on the 6th of Jan 2011 but it conveniently it landed in my junk folder. I just now saw it and it is very vague. Does anybody know what I am talking about?  They've been withholding additional manufacturers deals and rebates from members.
Every time I look into a product I am interested at Direct Buy it becomes SO much of a pain in the butt to even order anything and I wind up going to Best Buy or Ebay.

sara, if they are offering you a 75% refund to cancel your membership, take it, and the only thing you need in writing from them is a completed check in your name for the 3000+$ refund. Can you share with us what you said or did to them to get them to offer a cancellation.

As far as your credit card company saying that if you can prove they did not provide you the services directbuy said they would they may be able to help you, they offered to provide you the opportunity to buy merchandise through them, directbuy has not reneged.

    ME too
I recently recieved something in the mail about a settlement, Wilson V. Directbuy.inc. there website is www.settlement-direct.com

There settlement involves getting two months extension for current members and two months for former members. Please tell me there is something better out there then getting two months from a company that was a rip off to begin with. Why in the world would I want two more months of getting screwed? The only ones who will get anything in this lawsuit will be the lawyers no doubt.

I don't want to include myself in this settlement as I think former members should get some type of financial compensation, not two more months of a slick sales company they regretted getting involved with in the first place.

    Hissyfit -
I also recieved something in the mail. It calls for a settlement which involves two more months for current members and two months more for former members. the one I got was WIlson V. Directbuy, inc. C/o The Garden City Group, Inc.

This settlement makes no sense. Why would any current or former member want two more months with a shady company that already has been a majjor headache to say the least.

Please someone tell me there is a better lawsuit out there then this one.

No doubt part of the settlement agreement  ( if you sign it)  is that you agree not to try and get a refund.
