I again received a call from this number/company in my cell phone. They call 1-2x every week. so irritating.

I had long straightened out my credit card debts in 2002. Suddenly, since 2008, I started getting calls from this company. I do not know how they got my cell ph number. I read almost all the complaints ahainst this company and now am convinced they they are scammers.

Should we all band together and file a class action suit? Or, report this company to the authorities in ur respective cities/states?

Take a look at the Balance sheet for PRA- in 2011 the cost of purchasing the actual debt from other companies is mixed together with other debt acquisition costs, but is included in the figure of $9,338,000, and after calling all of us and sticking us with threats and abuse they collected for the year $111,777,000 in payments.  Essentially they are creating money out of thin air and bragging about it. Don't pay these cretins, these bloodsuckers.  Tell your elderly friends and neighbors, non-native residents, or any one who may be vulnerable to their collection tactics- Do NOT PAY THESE LEECHES A PENNY.  They can only continue if people are suckered into feeding them.  Just for giggles, in 2011 the employment costs for all of their calls and letters and emails is three times greater than it cost them to buy the debt which they are trying to collect.

No they are [***], these [***] are trying to make me pay for a bill that I paid over three years ago. These [***] are scammers, and no matter how many times you tell them to [***] off because the debt is paid, they keep calling.

My parents received a call from this company saying that they owed Southwestern Bell almost $1,600.00.  I submitted a dispute letter to them and now from reading all of the above, I won't proceed with them anymore.  Thanks everyone, and yes a Class Action Suit is just what they need.

You guys are nuts PRA is a Legit company they worked with me to get my debt settled. I was able to even get a settlement that was LESS then what i originally owed. I was able to get my house and am as happy as can be. I saw this and was worried I might have made a mistake pay that debt to them but my credit score got better and i knew it was Legit. I like their motto "Giving Debt Collection a Good Name"

Glad to hear that you were so successful with this Company-  Most people do not understand that this company buys blocks of noncollectable and worthless debt from larger companies, retail stores, phone companies, unsecured debt, etc.  This is stuff that other companies have essentially thrown out in the trash.  Portfolio Recovery pays them maybe $100 for $10,000 worth of "worthless" debt.  These debts are worthless because they are legally unrecoverable, so anything they can squeeze out of you is cream.  In California the statute of limitations to have a legal recourse to collect this type of unsecured debt is 4 years from the either the inception of the debt or the last time any consumer action was taken on the debt, repayment or promise to repay or installment agreements, etc.  My debt which Recovery Portfolio is trying to collect is an outstanding debt from Pacific Bell from 2002, who does not even exist anymore.  The statute of limitations expired on this debt in 2006, yet Portfolio Recovery Associates has made all manner of threats which they cannot legally pursue, such as taking me to court, having bank accounts frozen, informing my employer and demanding that my wages be garnished, blah-blah-blah in order to get me to voluntarily fork over some money.  Since they have no right to any of your money, the fact that you were able to pay off your outstanding debt for pennies on the dollar is great- if it helps you sleep better at night, God bless you.  Most of the rest of us can hardly afford the present without making un-required payments for debts we no linger owe.

They keep calling asking for my former roommate, but actually want him, only to track down his sister --- how's that for third-hand info?
I'll get a robocall from Portfolio, which i leave unanswered and then 15 minutes later from Allied Interstate -- so they must be connected

I'm getting these calls too for the past four months (from a 518 area code) for an apparent old Con-Ed bill that I KNOW I paid off when I left the city (and the country, I'm in another country now).

I patiently explained that there's no way I could owe any debt, I called Con Ed when I left in 2004 to verify amount owed and to shut down the account. This is a mistake either on Con Ed's part or theirs and the non-stop calls (got one this morning at 8 am), are annoying. The worst part is she's calling about a bill from 2005 and I wasn't even in the country then!

The woman who calls is abusive and threatening and completely unprofessional, and tries to weasel information about location and phone numbers out of you (I refused, no way I'm giving personal information out over the telephone) .. and if you think about it, a Con Ed bill has to be what at most? $80? So she's chasing me for an apparent $80 bill? (Again, I owe nothing, I know I paid everything off, I have a top-tier credit rating, I pay my debts). Surely at some point the $80 she's chasing from me will zero out with the hours she's put in. This alone is abusive.

    It's unbelievable.

really idk if it is a scam i mean look at this http://www.portfoliorecovery.com/faq/portfoli ... accusations.php and especially this http://www.portfoliorecovery.com/faq/what-about-scam-ripoff-accusations.php i mean it's kinda said and done at this point if u still think its a scam then maybe u should call Better Business Bureau and tell them that they are backing a "scam" lmao or the stock exchange and say that its fake stock rofl see how that goes down as for being rude or wutever every company has bad apples if they said something that was against FDCPA then report it if u know u owe debt pay it if u payed it prove it or dispute it if u don't know about the debt dispute it and they'll prove its urs. BAM u cant really say im wrong about this sooooo yeah discussion over?

So like, Debbie, are you, like a bleach blond [***]? Or, Like, do you work for the agency, like, under the bosses desk? It does not matter what information you have, what matters are the facts. These [***] are calling for debt that no longer valid, are calling for debt that has been paid, or callling for debt from companies that no longer exist. I received calls for a debt that I paid in full three years ago. I received a call claiming i owed a debt to the history book club. I called the book club directly, provided them with my information and you know what they told me. They stated I was in good standing, that I have no negative information on record and they never sent a request for a debt collection. So, these people calling from portfolio recovery, people like yourself supporting them, are all [***]. You are no better than criminals who mug people in the street. You can take your support and shove it up your ass...do you like, understand.

Debbie the BBB is practically a joke now. They back anyone and their momma... I worked for a company that turned out to be a scam... we got complaints from the BBB all the time... the owner would get the complaints respond "that isn't true" and the BBB would mark it as resolved and the company had an A rating right up until they went belly up. Anyhow I have a common last name and they keep calling my number looking for someone with a different first name but same last name. I just down loaded an ap that hangs up on them.

And to add to my previous post... "A: Believe it or not, there is some bad and factually incorrect information on the Internet. There is information being posted about Portfolio Recovery Associates on the Internet that is simply untrue."

If this was so true they would be able to sue and legally have all of this information removed. The scam company I worked for (I didn't know it was a scam when I was hired and I bought their BS to) zeroed in on one person that repeatedly posted bad things about the company and sued him... they were awarded over 2 million in damages and the host site had to remove all negative comments. If they are so lawyered up and legit why aren't they doing the same? Anyhow like I said... they are calling my number for someone I don't even know... but my ap takes care of them

They call our phone 4-5 times a day. They got my cell number too. We do not owe debt. I just let it go to vm. they never leave one.

It's been years we've been on their radar.
