Scam Collection Calls
Complaint
MCH
Country: United States
I again received a call from this number/company in my cell phone. They call 1-2x every week. so irritating.
I had long straightened out my credit card debts in 2002. Suddenly, since 2008, I started getting calls from this company. I do not know how they got my cell ph number. I read almost all the complaints ahainst this company and now am convinced they they are scammers.
Should we all band together and file a class action suit? Or, report this company to the authorities in ur respective cities/states?

However, when he was a young teen visiting a friend, the kid's step mother went through his wallet and used his identity to secure at least one loan or credit card by having a man impersonate my son to be her co-signer. When he received so many collection calls due to that ID theft we figured out what had happened and thought we cleared it up 2 or 3 years ago.
And just today, my son bought a $10,000 used car. He put $5,000 down and still has a few thousand left in his bank account. He still couldn't get approved for a loan for the remaining $5,000 w/o his father as a co-signer. He's worked at the same place for 7 years, ever since he was 17 years old. I wouldn't be surprised if this fake debt is on his credit report. Gotta go print those out now to see what the heck is going on.

Interesting.....
I started doing a bit of research on Portfolio once they started calling my house as many as 4-5 times a day EVERY day as early as 7am and late as 10pm and I was amazed at how many other Americans are being harassed by them.
My question is how are they allowed to continue this?, is somebody getting a kick back to look the other way?
Many credit card companies like Capital One, HSBC, BOA sell their charged off credit card debt in bulk. PRA usually buys several thousand at a time. On average, they pay $0.0375 per dollar. Here is the kicker that many of you don't realize. When the bank sells their debt, there is always a Bill of Sale that is generated. If a credit card company or bank provides a Bill of Sale, PRA now becomes the primary creditor. If this is the case then PRA doesn't have to follow the FDCPA. As part of any dispute ask them to provide a copy of the Bill of Sale showing that they did in fact purchase this debt. The Bill of Sale should also include what they paid for the debt. i can assure you the PRA is not going to provide this as they don't want you to see what they paid for it.
Also, I was reading here that someone had asked how they get they get information on individuals that you only thought was secret. I can tell you that PRA probably uses the same resources we do at the bank. They can pull a Lexis Nexis report or Accurint report. I can tell you that these reports include not only public information, but court records, vehicles you own and who the mortgage holder is on your home.
I also read about PRA filing 1099-C's. While I am not an attorney, I do not beleive this is legal especially if the debt is time barred. If you do get one of these, immediately write a letter to the IRS, FTC and your state's Attorney General. Make sure you also send a copy to PRA via certified mail. I can assure you that they are not going to want all the government agencies crawling all over their books.
One final thing. PRA will file suit against you if they feel as though you have the assets to pay off the account. I have seen many lawsuits filed by this company for as low as $500.00. Don't ignore them. Make them prove you owe the debt. I can assure you that if you request information from them in writing and they don't provide it and then file suit against you, you chances of getting the lawsuit tossed are going to increase dramatically. If yhey are trying to collect a debt that was included in a bankruptcy, tell them they can get their verification from PACER.
I hope you find this information useful. Remember, don't let them bully you into paying. Get the facts first and then make an informed decision on what direction you wish to proceed.
