They all lie.
When I register Bally, I ask can I cancel anytime. He told me I can cancel in 60 days. After 25 days later I went to cancel guy told me my membership canceled. A month later, I got a bill I went office back the guy told me he will told with office about my cancelation. A month later another bill came. I call customer service they told me I am not cancel and 60 days pass. I can't cancel now. After 1 hour discussion with customer service they told me I cannot do anything if I don't pay it will be destroyer my credit history.

Did you get a cancellation form?  Never trust anyone.  Always get it in writting.  Just like with your credit card.  You always have to have something in writing.  No companies are trustworthy any longer.

Having one hit against your credit won't destroy it.

I have tried calling bally's so many times, you just can't get anybody on phone. the number keeps disconnecting or you get a recorded msg due to high volume calls you wait time it over 1/2 hr and then there phone disconnects.
i've tried 800-638-1343 and 866-402-2559. anyway, I'm in Atlanta GA and the guy at Bally's conned me into giving him a check as a form of payment. immediately he voided and scanned the check into some machine. this was an authorization into EFT withdrawals from your account ! I cancelled the membership in writing, certified mail within the 7 business days per contract. so far it has been over 3 weeks and have not heard from them or got my refund back. I wish I had researched about these clowns b4 going there. I have a feeling they will continue with automatic withdrawals from my bank acct so I will be closing that acct for good. can't get thru on phone with them to discuss my cancellation. I have all my paperwork & proof of cancellation. they have NOT sent me any cancellation letter also. I went to the club and cancelled it over there also and got my 'notice of new membership cancellation' paper proof all within 7 day. reading all the post I realize they will NOT be cancelling and send this to collection agencies since they won't be getting any money. I will sue them in court and the collection agency also. anybody out there can shed some more light on this ?

I signed up for a membership for $5 a month which i could cancel at any time. That was a lie. It's been almost 2 and a half years and i'm now being sued for breech of contract. Bally's said send  $10.00 and they would see if they can provide me a copy of the contract that is supposedly for 3 years. The collection company said they will provide me a copy when we go to court. So as of NOW i'm Ready and Lets Go to COURT!!!!!

when you call them, press whatever button it is to speak to a SPANISH speaking person. Theyll always pick up, unlike when you push to speak to a english speaking representive.

I caccelled my membership through letter with $50.00 check as cancellation fee. They cashed my check then never heard from them for awhile, I assumed that everything just went find. But after a few months someone called me said they are from collection agency notifying me that they are collecting the money that I owed to Bally Fitness which is $909.00 dollars.

Well, I guess it is right to file a lawsuit..!

    To Whom It May Concern:

Today, Monday, March 15, 2010 I went to my local Bally’s which is at Bay Plaza, 2100 Bartow Avenue, Bronx, NY 10475.  I arrived to the front of Bally exactly at 7:00 AM.  There was about sixteen Bally members including myself waiting outside under the rain because Bally’s wasn’t open.  Bally’s hours at this location is from 6am - 11pm, Mon-Thu 6:00AM-11:00PM, Fri 6:00AM-10:00PM, Sat 8:00AM-8:00PM, Sun 8:00AM-6:00PM.  It was 7:30AM and no employees came to open the establishment for us members who come from far to get in and do our exercises.   I left at 7:35AM because I was so irate.  This location suppose to be open at 6AM.

On Sunday, March 7, 2010 - I went to Bally’s, same location, the same situation happened, Hours on Sundays - 8AM - 6PM.  I got there exactly 8:01AM, it was 8:45AM, this time there was about fifty members including myself very upset, outside waiting.  One of the employees was also outside waiting for Bally’s to open, she said she didn’t have the key to open the establishment.  I left again very upset.  This is not nice at all waiting outside, when this establishment suppose to be open early, for us members who are paying our monthly fees, and stuck in contracts to be waiting around for

Why is this happening?… This is very UNPROFESSIONAL, TACKY, and HORRIBLE.  I get up early in a very positive mood, ready to do my exercise routines, ready to do my workouts and when I get to this location which is the closest to my residence, I confront these shady situations.  You guys are promoters of positive life, health, and will power.  Well the guys who are managing this location in Bartow are doing a shady, poor job for us members who are paying a monthly fee, in  a two-year contract.

There are two local Bronx newspapers and local cable channels, and I believe I will bring this to the light about how this Bally is doing such a shady job by employees showing up late to open this establishment.  Again, very unprofessional, tacky and a new word TASTELESS.   I hope you guys fix this issue with this location because this is bad.

    Sincerely,

    Jose Vicenty

I finally got through to a human today using this telephone number:

    866-402-2559
    select option 3 (auto payments)
select option 2 (updates to auto payments)
    enter membership number
    enter zip code
select zero (they don't give you this option but it does put you through to a human).

The representative made aggressive attempts to find out why I wanted to quit. (There is no point discussing so I calmly repeated, several times, "I do not wish to discuss. I want to cancel." He's required to hear those words in order to move on with the process.)

He then followed an aggressive protocol to try to convince me to stay or transfer my membership to a friend or family member. At this point I said only "I wish to cancel." No matter what he said or asked, my response was "I wish to cancel."

So he finally moved on and gave me this address to send a letter of cancellation:
    bally total fitness
    attn. eft dept
    po box 96241
    wash. dc, 20090

He said to provide the membership number, state clearly that you want to cancel, state clearly that you want written confirmation of the cancellation.

My contract was signed with a payment of first and last month's membership. I inquired and got confirmation that if I postmark my letter by 10 days before my membership is due (usually the 15th of the month) then I will not be charged for this month. NATURALLY I'm going to send it registered mail for proof of postmark and proof of delivery.

    We'll see if it works.

I followed Kristina's advice and it worked. I asked the person on the phone how I would know if it had been cancelled and she told me in order to get a confirmation of cancellation I would need to request it in the letter.

So basically in the letter, request cancellation, and ask for a letter confirming this.

I agree with al of the above, it would be good to add the phrase:

'Please remove me from the automatic membership'.
so, all together your certified, return receipt or registered letter could read:

    Bally Total Fitness
Attention eft dept or Cancellation Department.
    P.O. Box 96241
    Washington DC   20090
    (date)
I wish to cancel my membership.
Please remove me from the automatic membership.
I request written confirmation of the cancellation to:
    (address)
    Name:(Full name)
    Membership number:
Enrolled: (I called my local branch and asked)
    Thank you in advance, (name)
