They all lie.
When I register Bally, I ask can I cancel anytime. He told me I can cancel in 60 days. After 25 days later I went to cancel guy told me my membership canceled. A month later, I got a bill I went office back the guy told me he will told with office about my cancelation. A month later another bill came. I call customer service they told me I am not cancel and 60 days pass. I can't cancel now. After 1 hour discussion with customer service they told me I cannot do anything if I don't pay it will be destroyer my credit history.

Join any other Gym but Bally's.  They cancel your lifetime membership and don't respond.  The gyms are dirty and no one cares unless they are taking your money.

I have just learned that Bally's was bought out by Blast and Blast is not honoring the Life Membership contracts of the Bally members.  What is that???  Joining for life was supposed to assure very low renewals every year.  When a company sells out to another company, don't its contacts have to be respected?

If Bally's actually went out of business, I could understand it.  But it didn't.  I understand they are still in New York.  Is there anything we can do?  The local Blast club employees say there is a lot of anger among life members.  I would like to get in touch with them.

There was a $499 promo going on in 2011, and I basically got sucked into buying the deal. I wanted to cancel my membership since I havent had time to go as of late, do I do the same steps?

This is just a legal scam. Tried calling them to ask and the phone said the wait would be no longer than 10 minutes and then within the 18 minutes and 45 seconds I was on the phone, it kept going "All our representatives are currently busy at the moment. We are sorry for the delay. Keep your workout fresh..." I decided to hang up afterwards as it was getting nowhere.

Regarding  Suzann's post on 14 Feb 2013: I have been a member of the Ballys located in Westlake Ohio since 1993.  With Ballys I was always given plenty of notice that my membership was due to expire was presented with options for renewing to keep the membership active.

Several days ago when my card was scanned at the front desk of what is now Red Fitness (as they bought the Ballys locations in Cleveland) the attendant said my membership was expiring that day and showed me on the computer screen the cost to renew. He said I didn't have to pay today and I said I'd think about it over the weekend.

On Monday I received what could be called a threatening letter from "Affiliated Acceptance Corporation" indicating that I was past due on my membership and that I needed to pay for another 1 year membership plus a $10 late payment fee, a $5.00 Credit Card Reclear fee,  and a $15.00 Credit Card Decline fee.  At the bottom of the letter it stated "This communication is from a debt collector..".   I was feeling pretty helpless at this time thinking I'm having no choice but to pay for another year and also pay the unreasonable fees.  Whoever heard of a 'Credit Card Reclear' fee or a 'Credit Card Decline' fee.  Obviously a ploy to wring dollars out of me.

I got an attorney involved.  He sent a strongly worded letter to both the Westlake Ballys and "Affiliated Acceptance Corporation" on my behalf demanding that Red Fitness throw out any idea of my owing them money.  I'm waiting to see what happens and will give an update when I get some results.

LESSON LEARNED: NEVER NEVER NEVER pay for a health club membership with using a credit card.  ALWAYS pay with a check.  I know someone who paid for his annual membership with a check where I paid with a credit card.  He didn't get a letter trying to force him to renew where I did.  The reason I got the letter is Red Fitness was  not able to automatically charge me for another year because the credit card expired.  And Red Fitness  somehow decided that having a credit card number meant that I agreed to renew without being asked.   Good Luck.

Horrible customer service, why am I on the phone with someone from Costa Rica?? They old me to send a letter, and I said in not sending no letter, that is ridiculous.. I've never heard of any such thing as sending a letter to cancel a membership, this guy on the phone was doing a tit for tat conversation with me..

Then I had to tell him, " so you mean I have to pay for postage stamp to send a letter and tell you why I want to cancel my membership?" The guy said ok well you have to pay $29.99.. Which was also false! Because I had the month-to-month plan.. And I already payed for cancellation fee in the beginning when I first applied. So that if I wanted to cancel my membership, there would be no fees. It seems to me these "representative" from Costa Rica are untrained individuals, and are probably doing a scam. I just don't understand why would customer service be in Costa Rica? I'm threw with balleys, I will be working out in my home!! So sad

really bad customer service, but i finally cancel my membership through the phone.  i called twice and spoke with 2 different agent. the 1st one told me the same reason like everybody saying here: you need to send written letter to their PO Box.  and he said no other choice.  5 mins later i try to call again, and doesnt know why i need to wait so long this time (almost 20 mins)  and finally spoke with another agent.,  I dont understand why they really need a reason, but i still tell me i lost my job blah blah blah....told him i cannot afford to pay. At the beginning he told me the same thing about send the letter, then i start to raise my voice and told him i dont believe the mailing, what happen if you guys didnt get it or delay, which mean i need to keep paying? i told him i even have dont know if i have money to pay my rent next month (of cos this is not true but you know them, they are liar too)  then he said anothero option which pay one month plus $10 process fee ( see !? they have another option actually, just pretend)  Since i dont want them keep charge me forever, so i end up choose this option ( i know i need to pay alittle bit more but at least i can get out this Shxt asap). i even told him i need an email confirmation for the cancellation.  5 mins later, i got the payment confirmation plus another email for my membership cancellation confirmation.  Thank God... finally done.  next i will have to check with my bank to make sure they will not charge me anymore... their system sucks.!!! never go back again.

Hey guys! I signed a contract with balley's at the club in Syracuse. I am a college student that has no money and doesn't work. I am trying to get out from this contract because: 1) I don't have $20 to spend for a gym every month. 2) Balley's is using my card # to make a payment for the month without my consent. 3) The nearest gym is more than 25 miles from me. So please guys help or give me some advice. Contact me: 917-474-8703

I think Bally's is the worst place ever, would not advise anyone to go there. Now they have a lot of them shut down including the corporate headquarters which don't say much for them. I went there w a supposed free trial coupon went like twice and told them I want to cancel before you know it I'm receiving a bill and now they want to take a cancer patient w no job, no money to court to sue me. Good Luck to them
