They all lie.
When I register Bally, I ask can I cancel anytime. He told me I can cancel in 60 days. After 25 days later I went to cancel guy told me my membership canceled. A month later, I got a bill I went office back the guy told me he will told with office about my cancelation. A month later another bill came. I call customer service they told me I am not cancel and 60 days pass. I can't cancel now. After 1 hour discussion with customer service they told me I cannot do anything if I don't pay it will be destroyer my credit history.

    To who ever reads this,

DO NOT BECOME A MEMBER !!! They will suck you in and you can NEVER cancel !!! I sent them a certified letter of CANCELLATION in November 2010, which was received, and I have proof. I call on January 25th to ask why there has been 2 withdrawals of $29.99 from my account, and they say they DID NOT receive the cancellation letter !!!
I had to write a letter, make a copy of everything I have and send it to their Washington DC account. I will let you know how long it will take. Never sign up for auto debit unless it's for your utility bills.

Their customer service SUCKS !!! You have to be creative to get to a human being! Rule of Thumb - if you want to speak to a human, always select the choice for sales, add service etc. They make sure you speak to someone.

Yet another experience under my belt...

Too all members trying to cancel.  Don't keep your finger cross, and except the worst or the normal for Bally, and that is they don't care about your letter.  I already have my 2nd letter wrote up regarding to additional fund withdrawals and all the forms and statement wrote up to be ready to send out to the AG, BBB, FTC and DA office at a moment of notice.

So PLEASE I advise everyone that are sending letter out regarding to over charges issue ALSO file a compliant the the above listed offices, the more the better.  Just look at what members in Texas have done, with enough compliant we will get this fraud [***] company down.

Midway through my contract, I had my credit card lost and replaced with a new number, so I have been paying in cheques this whole time.  My 3 year contract is up at the end of February and I sent them a cancellation letter.  It was not certified mail and I did not request confirmation, so I am going to send another letter. My question is, even though they can't get more money out of me unless I write a cheque, can they still wreck up my credit rating if they pretend they never received my letter?

The same thing happen to me.  I went in for the free trial.  they took my on a tour and all the stuff as my to sign a paper.  I told her to hold off because i wanted to try it out first.  she said ok and I could return to complete the process.  I never got the time to go back so i canceled my account.  First i called then i even sent a letter.  Later on i get a letter to request a payment.  I called told them i cancelled and i refused to pay.  She told me okay she will make note of my cancelation.  I didnt here from them again intil a few months later from a collection angency requesting payment of a THREE YEAR CONTRACT OF 2304 dollars. WOWOWWOw i was so shocked told them what happen he told me he has had many people who had the same problem.  I tried to negotatiate a lesser cost.  But im calling ballys to get this removed

I too fell into the Bally's billing trap. Such a rip off. They continued to bill me even after I talked to someone on the phone then two months later was told. "you must submit cancelations in writing". I had to go through the credit card co. DONT GO TO BALLY's!

OMG i hate bally's so bad!!!

the worst gym and the worst contracts ever. when i came there i was new sign up something, and they've promised me to cancel my membership at anytime. after that i got sick and stayed home for 4 months. i went there, they said you should have come to us earlier. so we've cancelled your memebership. and it will be sent to the collection if you dont pay the settlement. But i've told them that i was sick, i couldn't get out of my house to cancel them. I was supposed to send my documents to California from which you never get a response.

Honestly F**k Bally's. The worst cheaters ever. If anybody still has something to complain about, we should do it together. file a petition to the court about this stupid business.

I took a two pronged attack when trying to cancel a family member's membership which was under my account.

I used the "Contact us" option on the website and sent an email that looked like...

"I’d like to request cancellation for a family member that was added onto my account. She is currently unemployed and can not afford the month to month payments for the club membership any longer.

    Member information for cancellation:
Type of membership: Month-to-month, no contract
    Name: xxxx xxxxxxxxx
    Member Number: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"

How can you argue with someone who has no job and no money to pay for something that is month to month? You just can't. I was also presented with the option of freezing the account for $4/month. I replied (politely!), "She is unemployed. She'll be trying to save and pinch every penny."

After that I also called into the number 866-402-2559. Pressed a bunch of different options and after 1/2 an hour of waiting I spoke to a rep who was more than willing to cancel the membership over the phone.

I got confirmation from the rep that it was cancelled via email and also received a reply to my original email around the same time. Which leads me to believe these are the same departments. I'm hoping I didn't just get lucky and everyone who wants to cancel can do so just as easy as I did.

    "Dear xxxxxxxxxxx

Re:  Membership no. xxxxxxxxxxx xxxx xxxxxxxxxx

when I first joined them  on 2009 , they told me that I can cancel anytime without any obligation. I wanted to cancel so I called 866 XXXXXXx ,so this nice lady answer the phone and tell me that she cancelled the membership . so I asked how is he cancellation procedure , she responded that bally will send me letter states that my credit card will expire this coming month and if i don't update it with new one ,that will be end of story.
so i received it , it did not sound real  to me and i felt that i should call back since the letter never said the membership is cancelled.

i made the call , so this rep. asking me about my email address , i said what this has to do with the cancellation and i told him that i received that letter from bally about expiration of my credit card ( which was not true) and letter never mentioned cancellation . he said i have to write them a letter and better if i sent documents about my shoulder surgeries.

I can't believe how mean they are not to tell the truth and clearly lie over the phone . and now they ask me for reason of cancellation ....this is crazy . so i guess i would get surprised with a bill afterwards.
