DON'T BUY HAMPTON BAY FANS!

I purchased a ceiling fan and installed per the manufacturers directions. The fan stopped turning after two months of operation. When I called Hampton's customer service they told me sounded like a capacitor problem. They told me they would mail me the part with instructions on how to repair. The part came with no instructions and when I called back the technical rep displayed the rudest behavior that I have ever encountered. I finally informed him to just mail the instructions and I would figure it out. When I opened the fan to repair the capacitor I witnessed a bubble of grey matter which had oozed out of the capacitor. After a week I'm still waiting for the instructions to arrive in the mail. DON'T BUY HAMPTON BAY FANS!

Doesn't Hampton Bay have an email or a web site for complaints? I purchased one yesterday, took 7 hours to install because the instruction were half assed, back wards and all wrong.  The product itself is cheaply made for the money, and the fan chain which threads into the light chandalier doesn't work.  You pull too hard and the chain will fall out.  Impossible to adjust the fan speeds.
What crap for a ceiling fan we paid over $100.00 for.

      Michael,

I can vouch for the rude customer service at Hampton Bay.  The capacitor on the fan in my daughters room actually started smoking. I called Hampton Bay as instructed by Home Depot salesperson. The man I spoke with was quite rude. He told me that the part was $18 but they had a $25 minimum so I could buy two. He was zero help especially when he hung up on me. Needless to say the fan is still not working and I am hesitant to do any business with either Hampton Bay or Home Depot (as the salesperson said Hampton Bay would probably just replace the fan).

I do not know about anyone else but I can say that the lack of customer satisfaction/service just put me off to where I am looking to replace the entire fan with a more reputable company.

And we wonder why everything is being outsourced...well, I don't.

I have a Hampton bay Fan that I have had for 5-6 years. I bought 2 of them. One works the other one went out about 1 1/2 years after purchase. The capacitor is out. I am very discouraged to find this is a regular problem with Home Depot.

same thing here, they sent parts we had to buy, did not fix it, now they say we have to send the motor to them, we pay shipping, they pay return shipping , but they seem iffy??? maybe a waste of 40$ shipping?

Had the flickering problem and light stop working. Fix was to change the fuse in the light housing. Turn off electrical switch for safety. Simply remove light cover. Remove 2 lights. Unscrew 3 small screws on cap on housing. Unscrew black fuse holder. Replace fuse with 1 that increased capacity. Reassemble and enjoy. Lights are still a bit dim by design.

Hello, I have 2 of the 68" fans wired on the same switch and after about 2 months of use one of them will no longer respond to the remote and will not turn on.  I purchased them at Home Depot  but cannot find my receipt.  Can you help me?  My email is yumafarmhome@aol.com.  Thank you

Just returned my second Hampton Bay special order Lodge fan in a row. I must say Home Depot gave me great customer service and help with this. They even hooked the fan up in the store just to check things out themselves. Unfortunately this is the second fan in a row with a bad motor. I spent countless hours installing, having an electrian check things out, talking with Hampton Bay customer support, only to have to take the fan back down and return it to Home Depot. The Fan is a great "looking" fan, but the motor quality and quality control is just horrible. My electrician say maybe it is just a bad run of motors? Is so, how can their quality control be so bad as to not catch this?

I have two ceiling fans. One was in the house when I bought it. It's dated from the 70's and works. The CHINESE MADE Hampton quit working on high in less than 2 months and now 1 year later, doesn't work at all.

Write your congressman and encourage American employees on american products, with good old american quality.

I have two Harbor Bay fans as well.  The one in my dining room looks great, however, only worked for about six months. The fan is stuck on high.  I am very upset because I have not been able to find a fan that looks that good in the room I have it in.  My second fan is in my living room and it stopped working.  I thought it was the remote, but did change the battery in the remote and the light works on that, so must be something with the motor.  This is a very upsetting because these fans are not used everyday.  Is there a phone number for Harbor Bay?

You should call the store where you purchased the fan. We've had the same problem with our Home depot Hampton Bay fans. The Altura model has something wrong with the capacitor or receivers. There are two models of this fan, both seem to go bad after about 4 to 6 months. We bought 6 of this model for our home. And right around the same time they all started dying. We contacted Home Depot and they connected us with a tech support from Hampton Bay. The tech lady was extremely rude and obviously thought she knew what was wrong instead of listening to me. The part arrived and was for the wrong model. I contacted the tech via email and had to wait for 3 weeks before a new part arrived. The remote still won't work so the fan is stuck on Hi and I can't install the light kit we bought to go with it.We have since contacted Home Depot again and are now waiting for replacement parts for the 2 other fans that are now dead. I wonder how long these new capacitors will last before we're back at this point again.

I really feel screwed by Home Depot.  I bought 10 of these fans and I've tried everything I can to keep them working.  I bought them a couple of years ago, but they've only been used for the last year or so.  I gave up on the remotes and just use a wall switch, but still they randomly stop.  Sometimes they start, sometimes they don't.  Out of the ten fans, 4 are now working and I don't know for how long.  Home depot shouldn't be selling a product that there customers are screaming DEFECTIVE.

I have a hampton bay altura 68" and it turns itself on and off. At first it would turn off with a click but now it just sort of dies down. We think its the remote dimmer causing the issue. Either that or we need to have an exorcism performed. So far its probably turned on and off maybe 4 or 5 times and we have tried re-wiring the fan's lighting set up to (now it stays on longer between turning off).

In my opinion, not worth the money. There are other 68" fans out there.

Wow...I thought I was losing my mind when mine did the same thing. Turns on by itself and then off again. The fan works great, but the bulbs cost about $8 each (75 to 100  watt) and I have replaced them numerous times. The only place I can find them is at The Home Depot where I bought the fan. How convenient !    I am going to replace it before summer gets here from somewhere else and a better brand.

        Hi everyone.
Hampton bay fans suck big time.
My issue occurred while having a nap.
All of a sudden the globe lit up in an orange
Glow, and smoke spewed from the light fixture.
I thought the house was gonna burn . Ended up
just ripping the fan down and threw it outside.
My fan and lights used to shut on and off ,as others reported.
A total fire hazard. Good thing I was home to get it down.
        Don't buy these fans.
Your putting your family at risk.
Never again will I buy hampton bay.

Bill,   I know you're not speaking from experience, because I'm holding in my hand a light bulb from my Hampton Bay Ceiling Fan.  It is larger than a candleabra, but smaller than the medium size.  And I cannot find them anywhere.  I have the Huntington III model.  Go check it out.

I would encourage anyone buying a Hampton Bay (or any Home Depot house brand for that matter) product to do some research first.  The glass globe on my ceiling fan broke.  You would think this would be a relatively easy thing to replace- and a fairly common issue.  There was nothing "special" or intricate about the design of the globe- it is a basic white globe.  Bottom line is you can not find it or a suitable substitute anyplace- only through the manufacturer which is King of Fans in Florida.  The replacement cost- $35.00 for a piece of glass that is manufactured most likely in China for less than $1.  My options- either replace the whole fan or pay $35 for the globe ($20 for the glass + $15 for shipping).  From now on, I will not be purchasing any more Home Depot house brand products.
