DON'T BUY HAMPTON BAY FANS!

I purchased a ceiling fan and installed per the manufacturers directions. The fan stopped turning after two months of operation. When I called Hampton's customer service they told me sounded like a capacitor problem. They told me they would mail me the part with instructions on how to repair. The part came with no instructions and when I called back the technical rep displayed the rudest behavior that I have ever encountered. I finally informed him to just mail the instructions and I would figure it out. When I opened the fan to repair the capacitor I witnessed a bubble of grey matter which had oozed out of the capacitor. After a week I'm still waiting for the instructions to arrive in the mail. DON'T BUY HAMPTON BAY FANS!

Just purchased a Hampton Bay fan. Right out of the failure.Down switch postion didn't work. Called warranty explained the problem so the lady sends me a 'coil switch'. Replaced the coil and still doesn't work. Called back into warranty people and was told, you need a new directional toggle switch for forward & reverse directional rotation. Say what?!?!Gonna return the fan to Lowes and buy a Hunter instead. What a waste of time & effort. Quality Control and customer service once again at it's best...

Sue I think you need to find a real electrician. I have been an electrician for 35 years and have installed many fans and he shouldn't have needed instructions they are all the same. I hear horror stories like this from all kinds of people you just need to look for someone that knows what they are doing. Most are untrained they learn as they go. I served a four year apprentiship. Fans take about an hour.

      Dear Doug,
I suggest you fully understand the issues these people are discussing before you chime in with such an uninformed response. These fans are crap. I have 2 of them. Sure, the installation may be over some of their heads, but the problem is the faulty capacitors in the units. My particular fan motor failed - a bad capacitor like  most of them. Upon opening the unit, the capacitor (a heat-generating component) was stuck to the case with a piece of foam tape. This results in NO HEAT TRANSFER TO THE CASE, and consequently, the capacitor burns out quickly. It should have been bonded with thermal-conducting epoxy. I too, will not buy anything of value from Home Depot again.

Capacitor burned on my Hampton Bay fan, called Home Depot and they said they had two pallets of capacitors that just came in. They said it would take two to three weeks before they could send me one because they had to inventory them. They probably make more on selling capacitors than they do on sellig fans.

I am in the process of installing a 52 in fan purchased at Home Depo in Fort Myers last Wed.
The instructions say that the blades attach to the arms by sliding into the notch cut in the blade.  The blades in my package have four round holes cut but no notch.
I am in the British Virgin Islands but returning to my home in Canada in 10 days.
Would it be possible to ship me either arms that fit blades with holes or new blades with the proper notch cut in them.
Thank you for your attention to this request.

Hi John S, I been trying to communicate with King of Fans but I'm receiving an error message. Can you, please, tell me how you finally communicate with them? I need to order a remote control for one of my Hampton Bay Ceiling fan which broke down.

This is all so encouraging :(  I have 2 fans in my house with Hampton Bay fans and the light output is so poor that you can't even see your hands at night when it's on. I have the appropriate bulbs in place and they light, just don't put out enough light to see. Will I be risking fire by using larger wattage bulbs of the same type?

I bought a Hampton fan November 12, 2011, we had it installed and it worked until this week, put in new battery (remote) red light does not come on remote and the fan or light is not working.  Model # 507-386, I do not have receipt but have Home Depot credit card bill.  What should I do, should I buy a new remote???

don't waste your time dealing with Home Depot's 'Customer Care'. Their "customer service" is designed to discourage you from repairing your fan so that you decide to buy another. Smart tactic, ehhh? In my experience, buying anything at Home Depot means you are on your own, no support after the sale, nada, zero.

First Identify your Hampton Bay ceiling fan by going to the Hampton Bay manufacturer/importer: www.kingoffans.com (King of Fans),  then call their customer Service Dept., (toll free number in their website).

you will need to send them clear pictures by e-mail of your fan and the capacitor (showing the side with the electrical properties or markings and clearly showing how many wires the capacitor has), to confirm the fan style and to identify the correct capacitor used. Price for my replacement capacitor was $12.00 including delivery.

Another source for many ceiling fan Capacitors is eBay. Go to www.ebay.com and type "ceiling fan capacitor" in the Search Box and you will see zillions of pictures that you can compare yours to.

All the outdoor lighting is very flimsy Chinese crap.  I have had outdoor security lighting that looks terrible after a couple years.  The paint is faded and the plastic sensor window has disintegrated.  That's a nice look.  I wish they could find a good USA manufacturer to put on the shelf with far better quality for a few bucks more.  Put those on the shelf with a US flag next to them and say cheap China crap $40 or good USA made product that will last $50-60.  I will spend a few dollars more to employ Joe and Jane and have product that is higher quality.

DO NOT BUY HAMPTON BAY CEILING FANS!  Search the web and see how many people have the problem I have:  THE LIGHT JUST TURNS ITSELF ON RANDOMLY!  You cannot have the fan going at night because the light pops on around 2 am.  You have to turn off the power at the wall switch before you go to bed and not have a fan going .  Or remove the light bulbs.  My electrician, who installed the 52 inch Cafe Patina fan, stated it was pointless to have him come back and change the fan and portable remote dip switches (he has to remove the fan from the 17-foot ceiling because the remote is on top of the fan behind the drywall) as it wasn't a neighbor's garage door opener or anything in my house causing a radio frequency interference, as the light pops on at times when NO ONE around me is up or doing anything.  I live in a remote area.  This fan does not operate by the wall switches alone - in other words, you cannot turn just the fan on with a wall switch and not the light.  DO NOT BUY HAMMPTON BAY!  Home Depot will not give me my money back, much less the cost of the electrician.

I have two Hampton bay fans. The one with the light recently experienced a total metal failure on the bottom section that the pull chain comes through....it basically crumbled....explain that one...
The other one's chain broke off inside the unit.....I won't buy this brand again.

Interesting what I found when I googled Hampton Bay ceiling fan turns itself on and off by itself!!
I thought it was haunted.  It's a very creepy feeling being alone and all of a sudden the fan and lights turn on at 3:00 AM!!  In the four weeks we've had it, this has happened seven times!
Husband is at H.D. Right now to see what can be done.

Cheap? Yes, you bought it on sale at a box store. Mass-produced? Goes without saying. I have 5 Hampton Bay fans going right now, only one of which I had professionally installed, ranging between 5 and 15 years old, and which run 3 months out of the year for most of the day, and only one of them is now having problems, possibly relating to the motor. Even if it has completely died, I consider the $60-90 well spent. The table top fan that my grandfather bought in 1938 still works, yes, but most things built today don't have that kind of lifetime. Quit your griping.

You said it all, thanks...You are right, they are mass produced and from a box store.  You get what you pay for. .  If they last a 3 months or 3 years, they are cheap.   We just installed 4 new ones in our garage, no problems so far.

These are the 791-6407 Gazebo 11 outdoor fans, really nice looking and they were only $89.00 each.
Where else could you get an outdoor fan for that price?   In Houston humidity, I will take what I can get for some air in a garage.  We also have some older Hampton bay fans that we have had for a good many years and they are still working, never a problem.
