I purchased a ceiling fan and installed per the manufacturers directions. The fan stopped turning after two months of operation. When I called Hampton's customer service they told me sounded like a capacitor problem. They told me they would mail me the part with instructions on how to repair. The part came with no instructions and when I called back the technical rep displayed the rudest behavior that I have ever encountered. I finally informed him to just mail the instructions and I would figure it out. When I opened the fan to repair the capacitor I witnessed a bubble of grey matter which had oozed out of the capacitor. After a week I'm still waiting for the instructions to arrive in the mail. DON'T BUY HAMPTON BAY FANS!

2 Hampton Bay Altura 68" 3-speed ceiling fans run at only one speed (#1=50RPM, #2=62RPM). electrician tried bypassing the remote and switching out the reciever.  No improvement. What else can we do?

We had the Altura 68" ceiling fan (model #26668-item #904 384) installed about 1 month ago.

As of today, it has stopped working completely. Battery in the remote is good and we checked circuit and all is o.k.

We have 20 foot ceilings in our house so the installation of this fan was no easy feat nor inexpensive.

After reading the reviews/problems with the Altura, we are not very encouraged.

      Your suggestions?

      Than you,
      Billy Saxon

I have a home collections 68" fan from Home Depot that turns on by itself. Otherwise it's exactly the fan I thought it was, my concern is that it does that at all, will it also turn off and maybe not back on again?

i have a H-Bay fan as well and it sounds like its got bad bearings in it.  It certainly doesnt surprise me.  I know we always seem to blame China, but it all comes from american companies gone bad.  what i mean by that is that is reputable companies find it hard to compete using american labor, so they get sold to another company with a bunch of marketing people that just want to market the name products as they know how.  They send all the manufacturing over to China to get cheap prices without regard to the quality and engineering.  The make their 4-500% and the president is happy and they get their six figure salary and bonuses.  Thats america (with a small a)!  The problem is ourselves with our rich people wanting to get richer... is there any question about that?

Our EF200DA-52 nickel finish lasted 5 yrs of hard regular use in the kitchen but today the fan capacitor blew 3 globs of molten metallic junk through the side of the capacitor case. Has anyone gotten the number for the manufacturer, and would you share it on the list? Unlike some on the list, who are justified in being pissed with Chinese crap they want us to buy anymore but unjustified in complaining about the mfr sending a capacitor but them not having the skills to replace, I can replace mine but want them to send me one as I feel it's part of the motor and should fall under the 15 yr warranty.

By the way IF you are going to replace a switch or capacitor - remove the light kit and plades, turn off the power, and take the unit down and work on it on the kitchen table - dont try to do delicate wire work on a ladder. Besides while it's down you can whip out the Windex and give the whole unit a good cleaning before it goes back up.

Yep these and all the other brands are total crap - I dont think you can find anything made in the US anymore. It's partly the consumer's fault for buying the cheaper Chinese crap in the beginning forcing the better US mnade to disappear and now that there's only Chinese made crap they price this stuff as high as they want. We have to do like drugs - just say no and quit buying unless you desperately need something and no source of US made (even Canadian or Mexican - at least it's on this continent anyway)is available at all. I buy only Craftsman hand tools, nothing else - well worth the 15 to 25% higher price. We needed box fans - found US made ones at Walmart (I almost crapped myself when I saw a US made item in Walmart) that we ended up finding at Home Depot too - a dollar lower at Home Depot than Walmart.

i'm getting this fan fixed then I'm going on a search for working antique ceiling fans that were US made and just need some service and maintenance. My sister has a Hunter that's like 30 yrs old and all it needed recently was lubrication and cleanup and it's back to normal. Other than that the switch was replaced in 1990. 30 yrs ago the fan was priced slightly higher than the price of the Chinese made crap out now.

Well it seems I owe the manufacturer a little credit rather than the continual bashing. I emailed the address above for Stephanie, was replied on Sunday by Daniel, asking for the UPC of the fan. Sent the info back and shortly after got a reply that ours was made by King Of Fans (guessing it's the US tradename for Chien Luen in Zhongshan China) and gave me the 800 number for their customer service in Ft Lauderdale. Called this morning, told them the fan blew the motor capacitor through the case. She asked for the UPC and asked if the capacitor was 4 wire (to verify) and I said yes. She told me politely that the motor itself has the lifetime warranty but switches, capacitors, blades, lights, etc are 1 year. Ours died short of 5 and after some research I'm thinking the capacitor failure may be attributed to a recent lightning storm (not a direct hit but the power did go out for a few seconds). Anyway I was expecting to hear some sky high price. $12 she told me. I asked how much to ship. That was with shipping, about 5 days to get to me in the central US. Ok let's do this. Gave CC info and shipping and done. Maybe 3 mins tops from dial to on hook. Very easy and pleasant call unlike dealing with some companies (I dreaded dealing with HP CSO till last Jan, and I was one of their ASPs.) Anyway in about a week we'll see how this all pans out. No need for instructions for me as I do electrical and electronic work all the time and did so for 20 yrs in the AF but we'll see what they include.

If you get a unit AFU right from the box you have reason to gripe but you have the 90 to return it to HD easily. If after that give the manufacturer the benefit of a doubt and work with them at first and see how it work out before you get twisted out of shape, it might work out good. If your fan is less than a year old be sure to call them right away so you can get the part for no cost.

Since HD's Hampton Bay fans seem to be supplied by a couple manufacturers it may be that some people may have problems when they call for parts or warranty fixes. I just wanted to let people know that for me it was a pretty easy situation so far with the HD people by email and with this particular OEM.

Thanks Daniel for your email help on a weekend and thanks to the operator at King of Fans for an easy and pleasant call. Now hopefully between KOF's shipping dept and the postal service I can get this in-hand soon.

I'd still rather they made this stuff in the US and with US quality we've all known in year past though. I'd gladly pay $80 for the same fan madein the US instead of the present one that costs $43 (without the light kit) that's made in China. I'm also still on the prowl for older US made items I can refurbish and use for many years more.

Well a follow up on my dilemma...as I noted that weekend before last I was searching for info on Hampton Bay as we had a capacitor go out in a 5 yr old nickel finish with lamp kit, likely because of a thunderstorm the day before and emailing Home Depot's address listed above yielded a contact who informed me to contact King Of Fans which I did last Monday and it was a nice experience all around and total $12 shipped for a replacement capacitor. Well in this morning's mail was a nice shiny CBB61 4 wire 6/5/4.5 capacitor exactly the same as the original. Snipped the yellow and purple at the old capacitor, decrimped the crimp style wire nuts for the grey and orange. Connected the oranges and greys and put on new wire nuts and stripped the wire from the switch on purple and yellow and used a crimp type butt splice on those. Checked everything out before I got ready to mount again and put a square of double stick on the capacitor (like the old one) to stick it into the metal cavity so it would stay. Reconnected to house power and mounted the fan, flipped the breaker back on and when I came in the room it was running in high (the speed it was in when the old cap blew) and testing it shows everything normal again - and just in time with KY supposed to be 96+ today not including the humidity factor. Not bad shipping time considering it was US Postal.

So those of you that have problems under 90 days - let Home Depot where you bought it take care of it in store but after that call the 800 number in the manual and find out what to do - if it's less than a year they pay, if over a year the parts are reasonable. The sellers on the internet dont always have the right item and they want more than I paid total, plus they add shipping. Go figure. I may call KOF back and order a spare now that it's working great again.

Dont gripe till you give HD and/or the OEM a shot at getting it right - then you have due cause to tear into them.

    Hi folks,

I just spent 3 days tearing my ceiling apart to run wire and putting it all back together just to have my new remote controlled Hampton Bay Clarington ceiling fan that I bought last week stop working. I should have remembered the problems I had with the Hampton Bay solar lights I bought 2 years ago and the trouble I had getting them replaced all of which I bought from my local Home Depot here in Minnesota so it isn't just Home Depot in GA. Anyway, here's a number, email and a web site that may help you all find parts and support. This was on a paper that came with my POS fan.

    Good Luck.

Been a week since I ordered my part from Hampton Bay/King of Fans and still no part and no word. I guess at this point it's safe to add Hampton Bay / King of Fans to the DO NOT BUY list! Whatever happened to customer service?

Hi! We have two Hampton Bay ceiling fans. I love them! I love them as long as they're turned off, that is. Once they are on, they make weird noises. My husband said it's the bearings. They didn't always---the first 3 or 4 years were silent. I don't care too much that the one in the kitchen makes strange noises. The one in the bedroom, however, where I'm supposed to sleep, is another matter. My husband gabe it a good swat and the noise went away for about a month, but it recently came back. The other night, I finally just had to up and leave and sleep on the couch because I couldn't take the noise it made anymore. (My husband can sleep thru anything.) I can sleep thru noise it it's CONSTANT, like a steady white noise. This noise, however, would go away for 10 seconds, and then start up again for about 20, and then go away again, etc. THAT I just couldn't take. I would lay there awake, just waiting for the noise to start up again. It's a shame because I think the fan is so pretty. It's all white, no light, fake wicker. We're going to be looking for another fan, but it's not going to be Hampton Bay. Sorry. I need my sleep!
