Complaint

Under CA law is is harassment to call someone repeatedly and not say anything (silence to intimidate).

This company (319) 274-1902 called my home several times per week for 2 weeks.  When I or my wife answered the call there was no response - just silence.  Finally I had had enough and called back.  I asked immediately for them to stop calling me and to put me on their do not call list.  I was told they don't have a do not call list and then I was asked if "Valentina Johnson" lived here.  I told them no and tried to tell them how upset I was with them but they just said "all you have to say is its a wrong number."  Nonsense, they were clearly calling to get hold of this Valentina (my wife's name is Johnson and first name starts with V but not Valentina) and they were not going to say antything but keep calling until someone with the right accent answered the phone or someone called them back.  Silence being used to intimidate.  And they were targeting anyone with a name similar to this Valentina Johonson.

These guys need to be put out of business.

They attempted to get private information from me. My bank card number, social security number and any and all information, as a Senior of 72 years old; we have been informed in advance never to give out this information over the phone.

I cannot afford to pay them of course.

I don't have DTV and never have. Why do they keep calling if that's who they are calling for?

CBE group has called me pretty much any time of the day from 8 am to 9pm anywhere from 1 to 7 or 8 times/day. My ex-stepson (mentally handicapped) hwho is in his 40's has racked up an incredible amount of money in student loans. His emotional/mental/social handicaps will never allow him to repay the loans. He has only a handful of college credits and alienates anyone he works for and is soon fired. It's part of his disability. And yet they kept lending him money!  So.... I have spoken with him once in the last 21 years on the phone and once in person for a few minutes. (I have spoken occasionally with his sister and mother). He has even been declared unable (legally) to repay his bills. And still they kept lending money.
somehow, they got ahold of my number after 21 years! I have had my home land phone # changed.

    had no effect.
when I answered the phone, I get a CREEPY computer recording which really shook me up so I called the no. the man was snotty, repeatedly asked my name and other info, and got mad and hung up when I wouldn't give them. the creepy phone calls continued and creepy computer recordings. So.... I stopped answering and have turned off my answering machine entirely. My next step is giving up my land phone and relying totally on my cell phone, which I hate to do but I'm desperate. (I should say I'm pretty sure they don't have my cell no., nor do they have my address.  They just somehow got my land phone no. I'm retired, and on a fixed income. can anyone help?

Time to make the acquaintance of a good consumer attorney.

Sounds like you can send him (or her) a steady stream of business, in the form of FDPCA violations.
Once they cross the line to repeatedly harassing and even creapy, then institutionally it indicates they can no longer maintain compliance (if they are even trying), and they make good cases, since it's harder to defend as "bona fide error" when you have creapy calls to suggest deliberate harassment, abuse, and malice.  They are more likely to just fold and pay you off.

You can find a consumer attorney in your state through www.naca.net

    just block their PHONE number.
Thanks so much for these posts. I didn't even know who they were.  I keep getting calls that say this is CBE group, please hold. Can you imagine they call me and ask me to hold and from what you state here, it would be to get harassed. I don't owe anybody anything so I don't know why they are calling me.

I continue to block their phone numbers and they continue to use different numbers. They seem to have an unlimited number at their disposal. Now the calls even show south Dakota, Colorado, and even Wyoming on the caller I'd. I've blocked so many numbers, I'm numb.

Contact the VoIP carriers, Vitelity, Level 3, Paetec, Winstar, etc, to see if the numbers are through one of them.

Report them as persistent harassing callers.

      So sue them.
Let them pay you, rather than harass you.
It's really the only way they will learn.

Yeah I have getting six calls day from theses harassers. Sometimes the area code is (319) and sometimes the area codes are from other area codes. I recently got call from a margarita peers, from a 1877-585-3597 urging me to call. Prior to this the calls would be recorded or a voicemail that would be silent. Man c.b.e even call my mothers number harassing her line with prerecorded messages. I reached my saturation point with this leeches looking for money over a verizon wireless cell phone I cancelled while NOT on contract. They trying enforce early termination fees when I was not on a contract. Dam sleaze bags!!!

Bankruptcy wipes out all consumer debt such as credit cards retail charge acts etc the one thing it won't dismiss is government debt.

We just got a call from them this morning.  Missed it and returned it, then Googled.  Had been getting harassing phone calls from similar operations (like 50 a week) for months, which stopped.  This is the first of these.  The kicker:  We have ZERO debt aside from mortgages on two properties.  Our credit cards are paid in full each month as are all our bills.

Yeah... I got calls from these guys for 3 weeks, 8am to a few times almost midnight. Answered a couple times, nothing but silence, no automated message, nothing. So, I hung up. Just today I answered, got a guy with a cocky attitude from the start. But, I am usually nice to these people, simply because my cousin was a caller, and if you are nice with them, they try harder to cut you a deal. Except, this guy got worse. He asked me if J***** E. Was there, I said "This is her", he stated my address and I confirmed. He brought up Directv, and my head almost exploded. I just dealt with a lawyer from a check cashing place, got them off my back, so I tell the guy "Honestly, I won't be able to pay that until February." He asked, "Well, why is that M'am" (First of all, I am not a Ma'm, I am only 24! And he said it as though he were using it in place of b****) I then tell him, "Because I have rent and bills to pay" (mind you, I am a divorcee with a 4 year old and my own apartment and get virtually nothing in child support, the only reason I even got Directv is for my kid, the kid channels they had were awesome) after I answered, the guy actually snickered and asked "Well did you have these bills before you got directv m'am?" I said, "Actually, no I didn't." He said, "Well, if you want them to reinstate the services they will, no fee." I laughed a little and said, "Oh, I don't want to reinstate it, they may have great channels, but their business management sucks. They gouge you in fees." The guy said, (he sounded ersonally offended..) "Excuse me M'AM, but they only have 2 fees, installation and early deactivation." I proceeded with, "Really? Then how does my $24.99 a month bill rack up to $639.00 in only 5 months, if they don't charge fees?" He stuttered for a moment then got mad this time, "Well, yeah those but M'AM!" Once he yelled at me, is when I hung up. They don't do their company any favors by lieing, calling blindly (having no real info on the person they are calling), and arguing with customers about details. They want money, and yes, I fully intend to pay when I have the money, they need to treat us with respect. I'm a decent enough person, I work hard, I take care of my child, I do it all on my own. These companies don't care, they want to see you fail, that means they get more money in the end with fees. Seriously, what are they losing when they already stopped the services? Absolutely nothing.
