Under CA law is is harassment to call someone repeatedly and not say anything (silence to intimidate).

This company (319) 274-1902 called my home several times per week for 2 weeks.  When I or my wife answered the call there was no response - just silence.  Finally I had had enough and called back.  I asked immediately for them to stop calling me and to put me on their do not call list.  I was told they don't have a do not call list and then I was asked if "Valentina Johnson" lived here.  I told them no and tried to tell them how upset I was with them but they just said "all you have to say is its a wrong number."  Nonsense, they were clearly calling to get hold of this Valentina (my wife's name is Johnson and first name starts with V but not Valentina) and they were not going to say antything but keep calling until someone with the right accent answered the phone or someone called them back.  Silence being used to intimidate.  And they were targeting anyone with a name similar to this Valentina Johonson.

These guys need to be put out of business.

Look people, all you need to do is write them and send it via US MAIL so it is registered and inform them to stop calling you. They must then use the US Mail to contact you if they are going to contact you at all. After you tell them to stop calling, they cannot call any more. If they do you then have the right to tear their ass up in court via your local Attorney General. You must also have proof they called you after the date you notified them to stop. But, you must notify them in writing by US Mail first.

I am not the one they are looking for but they keep calling anyway.  I think I should call their CEO @ home and see how he likes it.

I forgot to add that when you write them, it forces them to stop calling and start spending money to mail there crap and that costs THEM money. They will try and rack up extra charges but you aren't paying them anyway so it don't matter. Let them write to you and throw it in the fireplace to keep warm in winter. I pay my bills but I pay the company I owe the debt to. They will always settle with you, you just have to call or write them.Best of luck to you all.

I have been getting calls from CBE 3-6 times a day. I stopped answering my phone months ago and let all calls go to my answering machine.  One thing I have been doing is at 9pm I take a photo shot of all the calls and phone numbers  that come in that day for my records. That way i have PROOF of harrassment. I get online and put the phone numbers in a google search to see who is calling. It's a hassle, but in a way fun if you make it into a game. :)   BE AWARE... when Romney and the Republican party takes control of the White House and Congress ... the FAIR DEBT COLLECTION PRACTICES ACT will be on the chopping block ... so they say. So if you think it's bad now ... Just wait till 2013.

MAYBE we will get some relief when the FAIR DEBT COLLECTION PRACTICES ACT will be able to monitor third-party collection agencies starting Jan 3 2013'

They call me several times a day, and I've noticed that the phone number is different. Several times I answered, but they say "please hold to speak to a representative", but nobody comes to the phone". I will do as someone else said - contact my attorney general.

For those of you who are considering changing your phone numbers, when you do so arrange for an unlisted/non pubished number. This reduces the ability for the autobot dialers to dial your number if it isnt listed or pubished.

For those of you who may or may not owe a debt but just want them to stop contacting you, send them a cease and desist letter stating that you do not owe them and under the Fair Debt Collections Act of 1972 you are hereby ordering them to cease and desist all contact with you regarding the alleged debt. Send it certified with a return receipt so you know when they received the letter, and state in your letter that any  further contact after receipt of your letter is a direct violation of Federal law and you will pursue all legal remedies against them for their violation of it. You should expect one "final contact" from them by phone or letter stating they are done (expect a poor attitude from whoever contacts you but feel free to laugh because by doing this YOU HAVE WON!!!).....

They have started calling my number about 3 times daily starting last week. These have all been robot calls from an auto dialed. I am not the person that they are calling for and attempted to wait on the line to see if I could clarify this and have them cease and desist further calls. No agent ever answered. I called back several times and was sent to a VM system. I worked in bank collection for years in my youth and understand FTC and FDCPA guidlenes. God help them if they don't stop immediately. The craziest thing is the approach they take. A system that auto dials and then put the potential debater/payer on hold is the biggest waste of resources I can imagine. When I was working for the bank we called manually and were required to follow all federal and state guidelines or face fines and the loss of our job if we screwed up. These people are unprofessional and stupid. Guess I will just have to file a complaint with FTC because I have a feeling that they will call again despite the messages I left them.

They started calling me the other day. When I answer it says in a recording" Please wait for a CBC representative." I have always hung up after hearing this because I find it rude to call someone and not even have a person to answer you back when you pick up you answer the phone and say hello. I called them back and they let me know who they were looking for. (Not me) Asked me if I could give them her contact number. I replied that I have no clue who this person is which is true. She thanked me and said she would have my number removed. I hope not to hear from them again. I know I will though. I have never had Direct TV and after all these comments I know I never will. Here's to hoping.

This company is headquartered in Cedar Falls Iowa . The first thing you need to learn is your rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act . If they are violating any of these rules, report them to your states Attorney General office and to the State of Iowa Attorney General. This does work if you are being harassed, it worked for me with a credit card company. Also, if it is for a hospital debt, call the Ceo of the hospital (you can find the name and usually the phone number on the hospital website ) and complain to them ...bypass the customer service and/or billing department. You will probably get a secretary or lower level management person but this does work too, as long as you are not being unreasonable.
The big thing is if you get anything in the mail from these people , follow the instructions on the paper as far as how to dispute the claims and make sure you send them a certified letter asking them to stop calling you, keep records of all of it. If it continues after you request them to stop, keep accurate records, let them know you are going to file a complaint with the State of Iowa Attorney General and your states attorney general and then do that. If worse comes to worse you may need to contact an attorney.
I have been dealing with these fools for quite some time on a bill that I already paid and provided proof of payment for. I contacted the original creditor and they were shocked that this company was still calling me so they are going to contact CBE and tell them to stop. I also turned them in to the attorney general. Enough complaints to the attorney general about the same company will get noticed, and maybe then they will change their practices.

Just make sure you are in the right before you complain. If you are simply annoyed that they are trying to collect a debt that you do indeed owe, you have no standing unless they call multiple times a day or violate  the FDCPA laws. Don't bother with the BBB, that does nothing.

    The Final Word
I'm getting calls from them out of Iowa and I think it's hilarious. They call you via automation and then immediately put you on hold. Then some foreign broad answers!

Could it be considered harrassment? Sure, but I'm the type that likes to have fun with it. Everytime they call I wait till the broad answers and then runs through her legal lingo and then I hang up and Laugh afterwards.

Bottom line is you can do one of two things.

    Pay up

Or don't pay up because unless you live in Iowa they're not coming after you anyways!

Any of you that have told this company that it is a wrong number, can sue this company under the FDCPA laws. These are the laws that protect individuals like yourselves. They are however , under the same laws, allowed to call you yo to 3 times but at different times of the day. Any collection agency is allowed to call between the hours of 8am and 9 pm but also in the time zone that belongs to the person they are calling. Never pay another company if you are already paying someone else. There are many companies that buy debts for Pennies then try to collect on them even though arrangements and or payments have already been made. Yes, I am a debt collector but I hate it when jerks think they can get away with harassing people. You do have rights!! Surprise folks, there are some of us in the industry that do actually help. Good Luck everyone..
