on nov 5th i had direct tv installed in my home the direct tv insstaller fell through my ceiling. i was told he would have to call his supervisor to come look at the damage and take pictures of it as well. his supervisor came out viewed the damage and said they would pay for it to get repaired as soon as i got an estimate of the damage. i did this nov 7 i got 3 estimates called nate faust whom was the supervisor i was to deal with he said fax all estimates and we should have it repaired within a week. i called each person that i had asked them to fax it to him. he called left a message on my answering machine letting me know that it was okay to have one of the companys come out and repair it then he would pay them. i called him back to let him know whom i had chosen and i wanted to know how this person would get paid he said call him back or he would call me back to let me know how it would be handled. nov 14 i called him he said everything was good and my claim was approved and he directtv would send me a check in a week for the damage to be repaired. i did not want to have the person fix my ceiling till i got the check. nov 21 called nate to let him know i had not received anything no answer just his voicemail left a message kept calling to let him know that i had company coming and needed my ceiling fixed no answer just voicemail. needles to say ceiling was not fixed before thanksgiving. kept calling nate after no return calls from him called his supervisor was told they would have nate contact me about this and if not him someone would call me . dec 4th nate finally returns my call with an excuse about he's the low man on the totum pole and he gave me ron andersons number told me to call him and he could help me. now let me tell you i have seven children and having this hole in my ceiling during the cold winter months was inconvenient to my family i went ahead and paid for the repairs to my ceiling because of them and because my heating bill was outrageous because of this i have yet to receive payment for the damages that occurred at my residence i still am having a hard time getting anyone at direct tv to help me they keep saying they did not get the fax of my damages i have pictures that i took of the ceiling they said send it to damage claims @ directv.com there is no website for this i am very upset i do not plan on staying with them after my year contract does anyone know who i can contact to get this problem resolved?

Please be advised that I received the address to your claims department and I misplaced it and I was wondering if you can email it to me again.  A directv installer was installing next door to my home and fell off the letter and damaged my truck whic was parked in my driveway. I have all the requested documents but I lost the email with your claims department where I was to mail my information. My email is armack224@optonline.net, thank you April R. Mack

Installer did not ground the pole he installed the dish on...Mar/2012.  Two weeks later, lightning strike VERY close by. New $800 TV toasted. Got a new one.  Turned on &  "No Video signal".  Direct Tv tech comes out & replaces all equipment, also toasted!  Says it should have been grounded!! Had installer handwrite a note saying equipment was not grounded @ installation.  He grounded it.  Am now seeking compensation for the 'toasted' TV.  No other equipment or appliance was damaged. Have written a note to 'President of Direct TV'.  Think I'll get a response or compensation???  I'm not betting on it, but hope something like this can be presented in small claims court.
    Anyone know?  Thanks....zoom@gvec.net

I also had a Directv satellite installed on my house that was not grounded. We had a storm in our area and a power surge ran through our satellite cable destroying a 65" and 30" TV. I filed a claim at the Directv claims department. I was denied because they said my damage was due to a act of nature even though my satellite was not installed properly. I was able to talk to a supervisor at the claims department but he would not let me talk to his manager. I filed a claim with BBB.

I just had the same problem, 15k of damage done to my audio room equipment,  no grounding.  I am an attorney and will be looking for them to cover the $2500 insurance deductible at a minimum.  They will lose much than that in drawn out legal fees, etc if I experience what many of the customers have unfortunately experienced here

At a minimum, customers here need to take pictures of the shoddy, damaging work, get an experts written opinion as to the damage Direct Tv has done through its installers, and file suit in Small Claims Court.  Direct TV will lose at least 90% of the time with a few good pictures and a reputable contractors statement who repaired the damage.  It will just take perseverance on your part.

New customer to direct tv new install in March 2012.  Receiver caught fire and destroyed my HD tv.  Their tech services told me to file a damage claim. Mind you no one called me.  I just got your basic automated response.  The installation was a fiasco.  They had to come out to my house twice, and last night almost burned a room down .... So disgusted with the service.

Direct TV came out to my home to do a installations and he lifted my carpet up to drill a hole from my bedroom floor to my dining room ceiling and then told me it was a mistake his measurements was off.  He also drilled holes that where not needed and also said they where done by mistake. I called called on him and all they did was told me to submit a damage claim they want me to do all the leg work (take pict, get a estimate, write a report) hell they should have someone (a claims adjuster) come to you and complete the paperwork I think.   Direct Tv has a thumbs down with me.

I live in an old victorian in San Francisco. I was pretty set on Direct Tv until I just read how they treat their customers and handle their responsibilities. Don't get me wrong - There's nothing I love more than being put on hold, lied to, and being told only the first name of the person you're talking to, then 'accidently' being hung up on. Rad.

Thanks to everyone for the warnings and good luck with your claims. No Direct Tv for me.

We have been a Direct Tv customer for 10 years and own several DVRs throughout our home. One day in late January I was away from the house and when I came home we noticed a very dense smell of something that was similar to burning plastic.  After searching to try and figure out the source it turned out to be our DVR.  The DVR was off but omitting a real strong odor which was making my family so sick we had to open all of the windows. We immediately took the unit outside to avoid any further problems.

Once the house was safe I called Direct TV to inquire what could be causing this. For the first five minutes they would not take any blame and indicated they have never heard such a thing.  After about ten minutes they thought the smell was from the hard driving burning. All they would offer was to replace the DVR, no credits to the account for the inconvenience to my family for dealing with this horrible and probably toxic smell that took weeks to get rid of.

Being a busy man, I let it slide and figured maybe this has never been an issue for Direct TV, until tonight when it happened to another DVR in my house.  The odor is so strong and it really is upsetting. I am glad I am home to catch it, and not asleep.

Now there is no way this is just coincidence!  Something is wrong with this unit and I wanted to take the time out to inform any other Direct TV user that this is an issue!!  The model # is HR23

same here, directv dvr model hr23-700 started smoking as i was watching tv. i quickly unplugged it. but the smell of electrical burning is al lover the place. looks like this is a very common occurrence, and they have not been able to fix it! i've seen posts as old as 2009, and my situation was a few days ago. directv simply said that's it's not common, and they'll ship a new dvr ($20 shipping is on me!) geez!

As an experenced Directv retailer for over 13 years, I can tell you right now I have never seen a Directv, cable or even a DISH Network receiver damage a customers television.  So for all of those of you who claim Directv blew out your flat screen Television and expect it to be replace..... It aint gonna happen.

As far as people blaming an improperly grounded system on their television issues, its very unlikely it had anything to do with your television or other electronics going bad.

Best thing you can do is get a good surge protector from a company such as Panamax.  Its well worth the investment, and I rarely see an issue with a satellite receiver or television when used with a quality surge.

Some of the things I read with multiple holes being drilled that are not necessary I can believe, and I think should be repaired at Directv's expense.

However, I think most of these damage claims are simply blown out of proportion.  If Directv did indeed screw up and your roof is leaking, you need to stop the water coming in ASAP while the damage is minimal, or at the very least do what is necessary to limit the damage.  I see too many people do nothing, and let the damage build up to the point where it costs several thousand dollars, and thats where you run into the problems getting the claims paid.

You can talk that foolishness until it happens to you.  When you order any service you expect the person doing the job to know what they are doing and to be properly trained.  What I have found out is alot of the Retail Direct Tv Installers are not required to go through a training program or become certified like the installers who work for Direct Tv company itself. I to have a lot of problems right now from a Retail Direct Tv installer right now and had to have a Damage Claim done. Everyone does not have money to just pay someone to fix a problem that they are not responsible for.

Had a good surge protector. Box in the garage apt. Caught on fire. The box that houses the cable wires on the house started on fire and melted off the house. Luckily the house is stucco or my kitchen would be gone. Netflix it is. Cable is not worth my families life. Bow can you explain all of the cable boxes spontaneously combusting? Why are you defending direct tv?

Electrical Engineer - on Grounding replies to Claude G.
Mr. Installer - you are plain wrong.  If the Dish/Switch/Cable Shields are not bonded and grounded as required by NEC code a lightning event at or near the dish can very well destroy anything connected to the DTV boxes (as well as cable or Dish boxes).  Lightning can elevate the potential of the shields/boxes to several millions of volts above ground if the system is not properly grounded and anything connected to the shields/boxes will also raise to this voltage.  Now what happens is insulation failure internal to the devices all because the installer did not ground the point of service where the dish down leads connect to a switch.  No ground is a huge risk and a disaster waiting to happen.  Even in the old days a single cable system had a grounding block required at the entrance of the home to mitigate this problem.

If the installer did not attach a ground wire - a solid green or bare wire that directly attaches to the electrical service entrance of the home - he is in violation of the NEC and most local codes.  Look for this wire and connection to your electrical service.  If you've had lightning problems and there is no ground it's an install issue.

I'm a Professional Electrical Engineer and Electrical Contractor practicing in Florida the lightning capital of the world.  So yes, an improper installation can destroy your TV, Home Theater, DVD player etc if they are electrically connected (by their shields - that are supposed to be grounded at the service) to one another.
