I have been going to Great Clips in Twin Oaks, Mo for many many years. I kept the same gal for about 8 yrs. and through out the last 2-3 years, she wasn't quite cutting my hair the way I liked, so I backed off from haircuts all together and gained quite a bit of length.

I recently in the beginning of May , decided after the last two times with my hairdresser, to choose someone else who I had used once in the past. This gal gave me the most disgusting haircut and I had even brought in a picture for her to work from. Now mind you, I have hair down to the middle of my back, plenty to work with and she now has the front cut so short and weird i cannot do anything with it and I cannot possibly have it blended without loosing a lot of length in my other layers to try and blend it into looking something like a real hairstyle. I went back up to see if another gal could just look at it and see what she thought and if there was anything that could be done.

I was treated so horribly and even accused of having gone back in for multiple re-cuts when there was no record of this in the computer. The manager even went so far as to say " Well, I know I've seen you back in here. I do not know why it is not here in the computer!"

Accusing me of lying and she had no proof of anything she said! This took place in front of other customers and stylists and I was treated like I was some stupid kid! i had even asked if she wanted to look at it and she said " well it looks fine to me " without even touching it!

By the time I did end up talking with another hairdresser, I was boiling inside. This gal had an equally ignorant attitude and I told them both I didn't want anyone there cutting my hair. She couldn't answer me why it was that my hair was so uneven and choppy.

I told her it's because no one is checking their work or really listening to the client. I came home and wrote to the headquarters of Great Clips, but because the are franchised, I knew it would do no good, but wanted my say. I have since asked my friends and family as well not to patronize any Great Clips salons. They have no public relations skills and the gals do not listen or check your hair after a cut. It's an assembly line. And they do not care if you have any problems at all. They act like it's you who is being the pain and they do not care if you come back or not . I will never step foot into a Great Clips ever again.

@ Nicole and Mad,,,,,I'm so surprised you both feel this way, prob cuz I'm not in your shoes.  Maybe you both need to consider a profession where your not dealing directly with customers???

I am a stylist..I am thankful i have a job..But, there are times we want to pull our hair out! We bust ASS keeping up our times, check people in, answer the phone, making sure we get exactly what the client wants, recommed product, covering shifts at least once a week..dealing with a grouchy boss..all while ACTING so cheerful and into what the client wants.. WE ARE NOT PAID ENOUGH. Although i am glad to make the money that i do. there are days i'll make over 20 dllrs a day. WE DO OUR BEST PEOPLE...I CANT SAY THAT ENOUGH.. JUST BECAUSE WE ARE A FRANCHISE, PEOPLE WANT TO SCRUTINIZE EVERY LITTLE THING WE [***] DO.

Your owners should not a timed system in place. That's not fair to you and it's especially not fair to the clients.Personally I always respect my stylists and tip 20% or more because I've known many in my life and I know it's a lot harder than people think. However the original posters experience is unacceptable. There is no reason to treat her bad just because she doesn't like her haircut.

It's just a different style of going about things, being employed by a chain salon. I work for a great clips on the west coast and it's my first job cutting hair so I don't have a lot to compare it to, but I certainly don't dread going to work in the morning. Yeah, we are timed, and we do have to sell 'x' amount of product, and we do get written up all the time about dumb things. I totally agree that incentive and positive encouragement would be a lot more successful than the negative bullying ways the gc system has of keeping their employees "in line." However, the experience is what you make it and has been very positive for me in many ways. My coworkers are all extremely nice people that I absolutely love, and when I was hired fresh out of school they all gladly went the extra mile to get me up to speed, talking me through haircuts and how to up my times, encouraging me, getting excited right along with me when I started meeting my h/c time and product sale goals... I don't think that the big brother style system is a good way to go about a salon business, but I can't deny that not only have my cut times gone down but my cut quality has also improved because of all the techniques I've picked up since I started, and my skill at moving product has drastically improved as well. As far as the corporate and the franchise owners policies go, I think they leave a great deal to be desired. But like I said, I went in with the attitude of getting something positive out of the experience, and I've done just that.

As far as tipping, everyone has their slow days, but tips are generally pretty good, especially if you're a good stylist. I make 9 dollars an hour and at the end of an 8 hour shift I usually go home with 50 dollars in my pocket from tips (thats 1000 extra dollars a month, by the way). Everyone is talking about how great clips stylists suck and can't cut hair. Maybe that's something you've experienced but many of the gals I work with have been cutting hair for 15 years or longer, and I've never seen anyone walk out with butchered hair the whole time I've been working here. My coworkers and I are all good at what we do.

I completely agree. I'm not blind, and my ego isn't getting in my way, if anything I'm too much of a perfectionist- if a haircut I gave someone doesn't look good, I'll know it. And I've never botched anyone's hair since I got out of beauty school. When people give me a tip, I make sure I thank them so they know that I appreciate it, and I thank them for coming in to our gc for their haircut as well. Even if someone doesn't tip me, I don't let anyone out of my chair without looking good, and I listen very carefully at the beginning and ask lots of questions prior to and during the service to make sure it's exactly how the client wants it, so if they don't tip me, I know it's because they either spaced it out or they simply can't afford it. I know what it's like to not have a lot of money, and I can't imagine how poor some of the single moms with kids that probably work minimum wage that come in all the time to get their kids hair cut must be. I do about 15 haircuts a day. If someone can't afford to tip me a few bucks, then they need it more than I do, and instead of getting pissy with them, I thank them just as warmly as I thank a tipping customer. Because they worked really hard to earn the 12 dollars it cost to get that kids hair cut, and they deserve to be thanked for the work that took them. I mean honestly, how hard is it to say thank you to someone. How hard is it to be nice to people? I'm not nice to them because I'm paid 9 dollars an hour for it, I'm nice to them because I'm not an [***].

I am the assistantt manager at a Great Clips in my home town. I am very passionate about the industry. I perfer cutting hair to coloring so I went somewhere where I can do what I love most.

I know people think we are a chop shop because of our haircut sales, coupons, and haircut times. We really care about our customers, at least the girls in my shop do. Times are hard and most of my clients are unemployed or making min wage themselves. They can't afford to go out and spend $50 on a haircut, but they know they can come to me and get a great cut for $13 and if there is a coupon that means they can put that $6 the saved into their gas tank. We do have an AVERAGE haircut time, which is between 13 and 17 minutes. So that means your 10 minute buzz cuts and your 45 minute womans cuts are going to equal out.

I'm sorry your visit to Great Clips wasn't a good one. We would have fixed your hair and giving you a free haircut, in the hopes that you would come back and try another stylist if you didn't care for the first one. Not all Great Clips are the bad and not all up scale salons are good.

Recently had the worst haircut of my life at great clips. Made the mistake by going back for "layers" and she ended up butchering my hair. She made it look very uneven. She chopped away at my hair for longer than 20 minutes i will never go back again. Id rather pay my 30 dollars on a haircut then try to save money and end up paying the price anyways. I dont recommend gc to anyone. And neither does anyone i know, sorry!

Yes I have been cutting hair for many years. I have also worked in many different salons. The salon I work in now is a Great Clips. I'am sad to say these salons do not give stylist a reciepe for success. They push you very hard! They time everything you do and usually watch you closly on camera. Being a people person I enjoy cutting hair while engaging in conversation, you can learn a lot from people. The job is fun. What is not fun is what corporations have done to this people orientated business. We are not robots and neither are the customers. There is nothing you can do if your not happy but get out and that is exactly what I'am getting ready to do. I will miss my customers or should I say Great Clips customers. Great Clips will escort you out of they shop if you are caught telling people where you plan to go. Great Clips stores are owned and run by pettie tyrants. They love to intimidate their stylists and don't value them. I have worked at this Great Clips for four years and the owner has not bothered having one employee meeting. Well I've rambled enough. But just remember customers that sylist you love may not be there forever. So don't be too suprised if they are not there one day. Just be happy for them and hope they have a better life than Great Clips provides.

First of All, the RUDE hair stylists that forget "the customer is always right" should be ashamed!  When you want to work in a place that gives a "five step haircut" then don't be whining about the customer's reaction to your sh*#$y inability.

For you to refer to your client as titewad (tightwad) a**hole that doesn't want to wait and expects perfection, is nothing short of outrageous!  This is the "five step haircut" mentality.

I didn't need to comment on this post...YOU SAID IT ALL!  You're outta line!
P.S. If you're getting $1.00 tips...that, too, says it all. You've probably been over tipped.

You are an absolute [***].  Customer service should be foremost in any position.

My daughter was just there and she looks like a weed eater went through her hair.

Kudos to you for providing the extra customer service.  Obviously, it doesn't look like Great Clips appreciates it.  But, you will find a place that does.
