I read a few blogs about a merchant service(squareup.com)on an excusve website.  I decided to use the service and accepted over eight hundred dollars in payments through them.  The problem is they will not send the funds due to my designated business account and I have now idea how to collect my money from them.  They continue not to answer my numerous complaints and requests for assistance.  They claim to answer every request personally which is deceptive.  On my first complaint, they personally sent me a list of measures for a certain proceedure which was fruitless and had nothing to do with my complaint.  If it was not for You Tube, I would have still been stuck on the application complaint.

Keep in mind merchant account sellers will contract you to a never ending stream of fees and charges to line their pockets with commissions.  They also make money on a spread when it comes to charging points and fees, similar to bogus loans .  They make money on the spread and can bend numbers.  We tested square in our business compared to so-called "merchant accounts" , the service was always the same old song and dance, a pointy shoe salesman with too much axe body spray and a bluetooth headset, all they tell you is we can beat that rate , what they wont tell you is there are 3 to 5 fees on the back end of every deal, from equipment rental and leasing, statement fees, special charges, etc.  They are frustrated with the simplicity and ease of square. Period.

I requested an increase to my limit and they granted it to $5000.  My first transaction of $2500 went thru fine but my next one of $3000 is being held indefinitely.  No phone number, no help, no return emails.  This company is terrible.  Wish I would have checked them out first.

This company has been holding my funds since last Sept. saying that I had to wait 6 months for chargebacks so I called them in March and they said they needed more info and would email me what they needed.  I have not received anything from them except W-2 so I can file taxes on funds that I don't have access to.  Is that even legal?  I have now started emailing daily and calling any extension and leaving messages that are not too nice.  Guess my next step will be to contact an attorney.  I have a family and I needed my money.

Don't go to the worst ripoff artists.  I signed up after using Squareup with a couple of my other businesses.  I ran a card and it went thru but then 12 hours later they said they were holding funds until submitted paperwork showing who i am.  i did all that and they never got back to me.  In the meantime I refunded customers money.  You would be well advised to refund money asap.

This outfit appears to be a rather successful scam.  Unregulated and unaccountable.  Stay away from them.  Your business will be better off without them.

SCAM, SCAM, SCAM!!! Do not waste your money or time with these fxxxxx guys!

They have had a review of my account for the last 3 weeks, meanwhile my funds are being held.

I had processed several transactions until they decided they would like to hold on to my money for a while.

They sent me an email requesting EIN, Articles of Organization, Delivery Confirmation, Company Ads, All because of supposed unusual activity.

They claimed review process would take a day and my funds would be released accordingly. I faxed all the documents they requested and I still have not seen my money.

No phone number to call, customer response is non-existent, they hide behind fake help center on there website. You even waive your right to file class action law suit when you set up your square account and agree to there terms.

I filed a complaint with BBB today. Will post an update as it becomes available.

I have used the same merchant processor for over 10 years now and they are awesome, even for online business types that other processors usually have a problem with. I'll be happy to make a personal introduction. Just email me at brn (-at-) benneumann (-dot-) com.

honestly I cannot believe how horribly deceptive this company is!? The # listed above is a working phone #, but it's a google voice # literally just giving you the web address and email AGAIN..there is no person; it just hangs up. NEVER use this company. It is a total SCAM.

I've used square for the past year for my massage business, never once had a problem. Deposits are made within 1-3 business days, unlike landline merchants which was end of month.

I opened an account with Square up.com and was approved for services and received a square in the mail.  I posted my invoices to be paid along with company that I work for with their credit card.
Square up sent me an e-mail saying that they deactivated my Square account with no apparent reason why.  What kind of company is this that doesn't give out phone numbers, so the customer can contact with by phone or e-mail.  Am contacting Attorney General about Square one.

paypals is everyones best option...they will soon have a card reader for free. Your information helped me not sign up with square and I hope you all receive your funds, because I know what its like to need the funds for materials as a business owner. Time is money and money is usually needed now.

Everyone should Tweet @Jack about your Square issues.  If you bombard his twitter account, everyone who follows him will see the issues and maybe he will feel the pressure to respond.  Good luck to you all, my parents are having the same problems with their business!

Beware of this company if you have any card not present transactions.  They will hold your money for 30 days.  The phone number 415-375-3176 simply has an automated attendant that tells you to send an email for any support request and then disconnects.

    merchant rep
I just read the post about the pointy shoed merchant rep with too much axe body spray saying" I can beat that rate" and had to laugh and comment.  I am one of the very rare merchant reps out there, who DOES the right thing, and I know that we are rare in this industry, because I have heard the horror stories over the past 7 years I have been doing this and hear them on a daily basis- no lie..My situation is different from many of the "cold calling " reps- as I partner with banks and depend upon merchant referrals for my livelihood..Many of the organizations out there, pay their sales reps solely to "sign" new deals...This means that they are strictly motivated to sell accts, NOT service them, and they do have a reputation to say whatever they have to say to "close" the deal  .I feel the need to clarify a few things from someone in the industry who knows how this works...What merchants should know is that it costs $ to support their merchant account...The processor takes on risk with every account they underwrite- the risk for the processor is the same risk the merchant has when accepting cards- DISPUTES...When disputes occur, the processor immediately goes to the merchant to secure the funds in dispute- if the merchant doesn't have the funds to cover the dispute- it's the processor who has to pay....Therefor, accepting cards, is like applying for a loan in many ways- a dispute can happy at any time for any amount- the larger your card transactions, the more risk.  Outside of the risk factor it costs $ for the processors to hire folks to answer calls, the systems that they rely upon to make sure everything moves as it should require $, keeping up with the card associations requirements=$, power bills, providing and sending statements, etc, etc, $, $, $...What I don't think a lot of business owners understand is that the way we ( processor, sales rep) make our $ is just like any other business- There are wholesale rates established by the card associations and 75%-90% of what a merchant pays goes directly towards the wholesale that the processor must cover- Our profit margins are TIGHT, but, if you want a reputable company handling your funds, and a local sales rep who you can call upon when you have a servicing need- wouldn't you expect to pay for this?I have MANY small accounts which I make next to nothing on- but, as someone with a long term career approach- I offer the same value of service to the small ones that I do to my larger, profitable accounts.   I have one word of recommendation when it comes to selecting a merchant provider- GO with a company that has been recommended to you by someone!  I can't believe how many business owners go with someone they have never met - without checking references- to handle something that is so important to their business- I wonder how slick these pointy shoed fellows must be to win as much business as they do- A lot of times, I'm coming in after a business owner has already been burnt by one of these reps, and I don't blame the business owner for the bad taste left in their mouth- but I always scratch my head and think..."you signed up with someone who you knew nothing about- and you didn't even ask for references?" Here is the other thing- because our profit margins are so thin- If you run less than 5k a month, it's really doubtful that ANYONE is going to be able to "beat your rates" though they will claim this til the cows come home...Again, this guy gets paid to SIGN new deals- he doesn't care how much profit is in the deal if that's how he gets paid, but the processor has to cover their costs and make a profit...There just isn't enough to play with if your volume is low- So, a lot of times, where these companies will try to make up for your small acct that they wont make much off- is to lease you equipment- where there is always a good profit- Don't lease equipment for card processing- It's a rip off- I have never leased a piece of equipment to a merchant because I have never run across a situation where I felt paying three-four times as much for a terminal they could have purchased was the best solution for that business...I could go on and on- just be careful folks- and please ask for references if you decide to go with a company that isn't recommended...

As to square- I was actually researching it for a merchant of mine- I have recommended it as an option a couple times, when what they offer appeared to be a better solution than any of mine for that particular merchant....I appreciate all the feedback you all have provided..To me, here's where square makes sense- IF YOU RUN small tickets- and everything is swiped, you are going to benefit from that no trans cost with a higher percentage- if your av. ticket is $5, than you are way more concerned with a per item charge than a percentage charge- the holding funds part- without any kind of support or advocate when this happens is pretty scary- my processors can hold funds, as well, when a risky transaction comes through, but thats when having a local rep/advocate is a big help-Seems to me that square offers a great low cost solution for the RIGHT type of merchant,in fact, with their pricing structure, they have GOT to be LOSING $ on many of these types of accts- guess their strategy is a hope to make it up on the other accounts- the guys who run larger transactions, where they will make profit- but...free swiper, no monthly cost- flat rates...what do you expect? As much as the axe doused slick sales rep would want us to believe otherwise, the adage holds true, people- you get what you pay for! Just use your head, and take a little time to research before you sign anything and save yourself the headaches in the long run.
