We bought a Maytag top load Centennial washer July of 2011. We have had nothing but problems since coming in the door. It was purchased at Harrington Appliance in Harrington Delaware. The first thing we noticed is that the clothes were not getting clean and a cycle takes an absurdly long time. If you have a soundproof laundry room, you might be ok. It is very noisy and today we had to rebalance one load eleven times. Ridiculous. We have complained to the local people it was purchased from and the Maytag company and had a repairman look at it, to no avail. Long story short, it is a crummy product for the price paid. I guess we paid by the decibel, because we got plenty of bang for our buck.

We have owned maytag appliances for many, many years, not anymore we are replacing first the washer, than as each appliance dies it will be with another brand MAYTAG has lost our business forever.

agree with you fully. Maytag use to be good machines, but ever since whirlpool got their hands on them they are junk. My last washer was a maytag and it was 35 years old and we had to do very little to it. I should have just fixed the old on instead of buying this one. I am writing a letter to the president of Maytag and telling him what piece of junk this washer is.

While the Centennial is a POS, it did not begin the downfall of Maytag. They were going bankrupt from years of poorly designed and sourced machines long before Whirlpool took them over. While Whirlpool brands have had their share of problems, they are still better than most other brands like GE, Samsung, LG and Frigidaire. I own a Centennial that has been a headache and now needs to be repaired for the third time. The water level sensor is a poor design and causes many of the operational problems. The tub Is poorly designed, too. It goes out of balance too easily. On the other hand I and other family members own Whirlpool products that have lasted and operated reliably for many years. This does not excuse this model, however.

You are right. Some Centenials are actually the last gasp of the reliable direct drive washer. As they "progressed" more usless energy 'saving' garbage was added- finally they took away the real transmission and clutch. The actuator is the on the final departure from direct drive, digital controls preceded the VMW which many of you own here.  Use less clothes. set all extra knobs to extra rinse- add fabric softener- even if you don't use it. make it give you all the water it can, and fill it maybe halfway.   NEW?
Forget it., just buy a rebuilt real washer from a local honest starving appliance fellow.  I hope this helps.

When replacing, I just want to inform you that Maytag is part of the Whirlpool group. Whirlpool owns Maytag, Jenn-Air, Amana and of course Whirlpool.

I will also suggest to you that GE is also a very poor choice. We have had many problems with GE appliances. Most recent, their microwaves. I had to replace a $170 microwave just after 1 year and 3 months.

I also suggest DO NOT purchase extended warranties. These only let the manufacturers off the hook for their quality problems.

As consumers, we need to hold these companies feet to the fire for the quality of their products w/o spending extra money on extended warranties.

I hope this word spreads around. My battle cry for these failing products is "it is not a light bulb. I do not expect to replace them every year or two".

Please help spread word this around.

      Thanks.

We should all contact Michael Moore.  he does great documentaries and would probably love biting on Whirlpool/Maytag etc.

I would let Michael Moore lick my cesspool, that's about it.

You can thank Michael Moore and his liberal idiot friends in this administration.  Government energy standards have taken away the water and power needed to clean clothing properly.

Thanks for the info. I agree with you on the extended warranty insurance. Use it toward your next washer.

I bought a Maytag Centenial washer for my wife at our local lowes and Im very upset with the quality and performance. I work hard for what my family needs and we have always bought maytag equipment but not anymore.I have had repairmen look at it the washer and has not been able to fix this balance problem. If this is how maytag wants to build their machines then i will not buy their products

Maytag is no longer building these machines! They are now owned and made by Whirlpool, who have cheapend  them.

Maytag did the cheapening of their washers way before Whirlpool bought them out.

I too am guilty of buying and owning this piece of junk. it has broken twice, does not clean the clothes, it is noisy, unreliable difficult to deal with. The first repairman that came out to our house was an animal and failed to fix it so I will never ever buy another Maytag or Whirlpool product, EVER! stay away from this device, if you buy one it will break. IT will break down and if you call for warrenty service you may need a cop or bouncer cause they will send a goon over to fix it, do not buy it.
