TERRIBLE! Bought the washer in December of 2010. We began finding holes in clothes in March of 2011. We found that we had a small crack in our dryer. After trying to fix it ourself, the crack came back. So, we replaced the dryer. After we replaced the dryer, we began to find MORE holes in clothes. It was NOT the dryer causing the holes, but our DUET Whirlpool washer. We had several drain error instnances as well. We have had the service repair man out several times for the drain error problem. Ranging from a Mardi Gras bead in the drain pump, to several baby socks to a large adult tube sock. I'd say it's been at least 7 times. We had finally had enough of our clothes, which I would estimate to be at LEAST $500 worth of clothing, the service repair man said he had never seen anything like it. This was in November of 2011. They said they would replace the tub and drum system but it would take several weeks to get the part in, which took us past our warrantee. After numerous complaints, Whirlpool offered the best they could do was extend our warrantee 6 additional months. The first drum was broken upon delivery, so another would have to be ordered. There goes another week. Finally it came in. We were all but assured the problem would be fixed. TWO days later, same drain error code! 3 more socks caught in the drain pump! Took the socks out myself after watching them do it so I didn't have to call them out again and pay the fee. Next day...MORE HOLES in clothes! Call and they say they can't get a service guy out for at least a week! This is all during the Christmas and New Year's holidays! January 9th the service repair man comes and says, yep, it's the same problem. We need to replace the tub and drum AGAIN! The part would be guaranteed to be in by Friday, January 13th! Guess what? Today I get a call...the parts are on BACKORDER and it won't be until January 24th until they can become available!! Seriously...SERIOUSLY??!! I have a family of 6...me, my wife, a 8 year old girl, a 7 year old girl, and 5 year old boy and an 18 month old girl. The piles upon piles of laundry are limitless waiting for empty promises. In the meantime, we have had to wash essential clothes (school clothes, socks, underwear, etc.) at laundromats, and friends and other family members' houses. Whilpool doesn't give a care about ANY of our problems. I come from a HUGE family, as does my wife. Together, we probably have 100 family members. I will crusade against Whirlpool for any and ALL appliances if this matter is NOT fixed and their customer service is not better!

Glad to see it's not just me. I just put in a search after taking a brand new shirt out of the wash with holes and the color worn out of the sleeve. That's the 3rd shirt in two weeks!!! So frustrating. Pit does it, then it doesn't. Bought the machine about four years ago and about 6 months in it started. First it was the rubber bout completely off with the wire thing that holds it on. The boot was actually twisted up IN the laundry. A&E came.....bunch of jokers. Telling me the laundry load was too big. That's why I bought the machine, for large loads. Which I haven't done since all the trouble I had. Then A&E installed it wrong....in the meantime I tried arguing with whirlpool and telling them I wanted the machine replaced the 3rd time I had A&E out. No deal. They said it wasn't a lemon and no they wouldn't replace it. They blamed A&E. Oh, and offered to extend the warranty, at cost to me. No thanks.
I do Small loads everytime now. It seemed to work but suddenly? Torn clothes again. Aaaarrrgghh
As far as the water smell and clogged drain, thankfully my husband read the manual and does it himself. We have to do it about every two months. I don't mind the maintenance, but the ripped clothes??!! I'm pissed.
I realize this is an older thread but are there any updates? Anyone have any luck or find a resolution?

Hey. Tracey! I just posted a complaint on this sight for dealing with this same issue. I got nowhere with Whirlpool after spending valuable time on the phone with them on several occasions, until this last call. The supervisor I talked with last week would not replace the machine or reimburse me for the price of the machine but was willing to give me a "considerable" discount on a new Whirlpool or Maytag. I would have to purchase the machine on line, and I am not sure what "considerable" would mean and also I don't know if I would have to pay for shipping...I have not called her back yet. I wanted to do more research to find out if anyone has initiated a class action suit that I could join. Honestly, I wouldn't even want another whirlpool machine after all the damage to clothing, hassle of washing my clothes in mesh bags (wondering if they are clean because they are in huge compact balls!) and the inconvenience of only doing laundry when family is gone because the machine is SO loud when in use! I stacked my machines in a tight corner and it will be a big pain to change out. And are other washers compatible with this stacking kit? Or will I have to invest in a new dryer too? Tracy, I am so sorry you and others have also had to go thru this negligent Whirlpool experience! Please speak your mind with the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-382-4357. The gentleman I talked to suggested we ALL voice our complaints with them. Let's hope Whirlpool does the right thing...soon!

We bought our Whirlpool Duet washing machine in February 2013, about a month ago the rubber gasket pulled off the front of the machine and got knotted up with laundry.  My wife got it unknotted and I got the gasket put back on. About a week later the gasket just fell apart and we had to have it replaced. That was New Years Eve.  Now, the machine seems to destroy a garment or two a load.  At first we thought our puppy was getting into our laundry but then we discovered it is actually the washing machine.  Whirlpool is absolutely no help--they admit they have heard of the problem but its not flagged for recall.

A washing machine should last more than 23 months-I can't believe I am off to buy another one because I refuse to put more money into this one. I will never buy a whirlpool washer again.

I have the same problem with my washer cloths torn and ripped up Whirlpool told me they knew there were a problem with this bot wouldn't do anything about it because I was two weeks out of warranty by two weeks WTH!!! I reported it to the BBB no luck. I also have read about a replacement glass for the doo to push the cloths back away from the outer drum and boot.So what I have done is bought a rubber hose and split it then glued it to the outer drum so far so good

So far there is NOTHING being done in Canada either.
You would think that something would be done with ALL of us here complaining. We're not being petty or irrational. We're not being dramatic or unfair. We have clothing that we work hard to earn. Sometimes they are gifts with sentimental value.
Just design a solution or provide consumers with SOMETHING LOGICAL!
You can engineer to god damn thing... maybe you can engineer a freaking solution!

I am having the same problem with my Whirlpool Duet Washer Dryer. It is ruining our clothes. We have probably thrown away $2,000 worth of clothes so far. I had no idea so many people are having the same issues.

Also, you guys need to notice this Melanie lady on here is a scam. She says she is a rep for Maytag then a rep for Whirlpool. Find all of her posts. One email says Maytag.Digital@maytag.com and another says Whirlpool.Digital@whirlpool.com. She is asking for a bunch of personal info. Email address. Phone number. Mailing address. I cant believe no one else picked up on that. Has anyone had any luck with any assistance from Melanie? I hope its not a scam but sure looks like one.

Anyway, I hate my Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer. I want to trash them and go buy another set from a different manufacturer. I am all for anything against Whirlpool if I can get a refund on my purchases and / or compensation of my ruined clothes.

I've had multiple pieces of clothing torn up from my washer. After looking inside, I see where things are getting stuck and ripped. It's on the drum. I called whirlpool and apparently it's not covered because my washer is almost 5 years old. A new drum costs almost as much as a new washer. So....? I guess I'm just out of luck? great.

My washer - Maytag model (made by Whirlpool) MHWE251YG00 was tearing clothes and making noise (out of warranty) - service said there was a broken bracket on tub and gave me # to call mfg - called and they sent new tub free.  Tub came and was bad - got a 2nd one free and mfg paid for expedited shipping and installation.  Fixed noise issue, but had a shirt damaged in the 1st few loads. Read the posts  here and called back and they are now shipping and paying for installation of the new style glass piece for the door as well as the rubber boot that seals the door to the tub - scheduled for next week so will have to see if it works.

Adding another torn clothes "data point" . We have a Whirlpool Duet model WFW9151YW we bought from Lowes 2 1/2 years ago. It has destroyed over $1,000 in clothes including a $600 dress. The rubber gasket has been replaced 2 times (once under warranty).  I'm trying to get Lowes to replace it, but very doubtful anything will be done.

So what does whirlpool do when the clothes are being torn from their product?
We have fixed parts that their technician said to do, we clean it.... Just never buy their product again? I just can't believe that they don't stand behind their company name when clearly it is the fault of the design of their washing machine.

Soooo tired of this washer ripping clothes and ruining hundreds of dollars worth of clothing!!!!  This is not right!  There are pages of people with the same issue!   They should not be allowed to get away with this!  Not to mention that I just spent the past 2 months replacing every single possible part on my whirlpool fridge!  All appliances are all less than 2 years old!

Hi, It took some digging here and elsewhere, but the solution to this problem is to replace: 1. The bellows for your particular washer (mine was part #w10290499 - look yours up with your model #) and 2. the re-designed inner door  glass - part number #W10388315  or #8540428 which are identical and the same for all washers -  which prevents clothes from sliding into the gap between bellow and tub. I bought both on Amazon for about $150 and you can even buy the glass used. There are excellent videos on-line (google it) and installation of both glass and bellows is pretty easy if you can use a screwdriver.
