TERRIBLE! Bought the washer in December of 2010. We began finding holes in clothes in March of 2011. We found that we had a small crack in our dryer. After trying to fix it ourself, the crack came back. So, we replaced the dryer. After we replaced the dryer, we began to find MORE holes in clothes. It was NOT the dryer causing the holes, but our DUET Whirlpool washer. We had several drain error instnances as well. We have had the service repair man out several times for the drain error problem. Ranging from a Mardi Gras bead in the drain pump, to several baby socks to a large adult tube sock. I'd say it's been at least 7 times. We had finally had enough of our clothes, which I would estimate to be at LEAST $500 worth of clothing, the service repair man said he had never seen anything like it. This was in November of 2011. They said they would replace the tub and drum system but it would take several weeks to get the part in, which took us past our warrantee. After numerous complaints, Whirlpool offered the best they could do was extend our warrantee 6 additional months. The first drum was broken upon delivery, so another would have to be ordered. There goes another week. Finally it came in. We were all but assured the problem would be fixed. TWO days later, same drain error code! 3 more socks caught in the drain pump! Took the socks out myself after watching them do it so I didn't have to call them out again and pay the fee. Next day...MORE HOLES in clothes! Call and they say they can't get a service guy out for at least a week! This is all during the Christmas and New Year's holidays! January 9th the service repair man comes and says, yep, it's the same problem. We need to replace the tub and drum AGAIN! The part would be guaranteed to be in by Friday, January 13th! Guess what? Today I get a call...the parts are on BACKORDER and it won't be until January 24th until they can become available!! Seriously...SERIOUSLY??!! I have a family of 6...me, my wife, a 8 year old girl, a 7 year old girl, and 5 year old boy and an 18 month old girl. The piles upon piles of laundry are limitless waiting for empty promises. In the meantime, we have had to wash essential clothes (school clothes, socks, underwear, etc.) at laundromats, and friends and other family members' houses. Whilpool doesn't give a care about ANY of our problems. I come from a HUGE family, as does my wife. Together, we probably have 100 family members. I will crusade against Whirlpool for any and ALL appliances if this matter is NOT fixed and their customer service is not better!

Same issue here, all new parts and still we  a ripped new bedspread, dresses, work pants, underpants, and even our newclothing after repairs had been done and parts paid for. Perhaps the BBB can help us all resolve these issues. In my opinion, the product should be recalled due to the damage done nd the costs of repairs/ parts.

Melanie,  we are also experiencing numerous shredded articles of clothing with our whirlpool duet washing machine.  It was happening for a few months before I realized it was the washer causing the problem.  Of course, our warranty is expired now.  My husband dug an adult sock out of the drain hose a couple of weeks ago after the machine started spewing water from the soap dispenser.  And today, the machine shredded yet another article of clothing.  Numerous times, I have found kid socks jammed into the rubber gasket after a wash cycle.  The problems are just riduliculous and numerous.  We bought a whirlpool because of the company's reputation, but if this can't get resolved for us as without additional out of pocket cost, I will forever have a changed view of this company and will be sure to give another manufacturer our business.  I would love for you to contact me directly to help resolve this issue.  I will also email the whirlpool address you included below.  Thank you.

      Hi Melanie.

I wrote you and Sears a separate email, but since you are here, I will write again.  My Whirlpool washer is tearing my clothing, sheets, even denim.  This is totally unacceptable and new parts are not working.  The only solution is to recall these products, replace them with something else that doesn't tear, or refund the purchase price.  If I do not hear from someone regarding this matter. I will be filing a complaint with the BBB and the Attorney General's office.  This is not a breakdown, this is a design defect.

I had that same problem.  Thru research on internet found this is a known and widespread problem with defective parts and poor design of the washers. But Whirlpool will not admit it.  The bearing that holds the drums is defective and is failing. What is causing the problems of the tearing clothes is that as that bearing fails more and more, the drums are getting out of alignment. When that happens, our clothes are getting caught in between the tubs and getting holes in them and also ripping and tearing.  There are hundreds of complaints on Whirlpool front load washing machines all over the internet!  My machine ruined hundreds of dollars of clothes before it had catastrific failer and died. Deemed too damaged to fix by extended warranty, i am receiving purchase price back for the machine. How Whirlpool stays in business is beyond me!  Not only are there complaints about their washing machines, there are hundreds out there on all of their appliances! If you don't believe me, just check out their Facebook page! I have learned several things from my experience. I will never, ever purchase a Whirlpool or any brand associated with Whirlpool appliance! I will also never purchase a front load washing machine again!  These manufacturers have no clue what they are doing in the design of these machines! They are not only costing consumers thousands of dollars on ruined clothes, but they are also putting our health at risk with the known mold issue. To prove that point, check out  the class action lawsuit that the consumers of Ohio are currently in progress in filing against Whirlpool and the front load washers due to the mold issue!  Bottom line Whirlpools credibility is zero in thousands of consumers minds and hopefully word will continue to spread that this company builds crappy appliances that cost hundreds to thousands of dollars and continues to deny any wrong doing on their part and blames innocent consumers for either making up stories or mis-use of their products.

      Hi Melanie,

How do we get in touch with you via email.  Whirlpool should do something about this.  I agree with a post that this is a product defect and should be recalled.

      Here is my post...

Our townhouse is relatively new and so are the Whirlpool washing machone and dryer.  To our surprise, clothes are being torn.  This is definitely a product defect.  I called Whirlpool to report the problem and I was told that they will send someone to assess the problem for $80 !$?  I even asked customer service if there have already been other calls of the same issue.  And the response was none.  What a lie!  Why would they even send someone to check or assess the problem when people have already been complaining about the priduct.  I agree that they should recall the product and change our machines.

Another problem of the washing machine is the error code A10.  During the washing cycle, it stops before the spinning part.  And I have seen a lot of customers complaining about this problem as well.  The more Whirlpool should replace our washing machines.

What should we do for Whirlpool to listen to us and do something about this???

We are having numerous problems: ripping cloths and material collection inside that makes our cloths dirty after washing. I need help. And it seams only solution would be completely different washer. Payed lot of money for this service.

Melanie, as I type the service guy is at my house, again...
My Whirlpool Duet washer is destroying my clothes, sheets, tablecloths... It's just ripping chunks of fabric. The repair people are clueless about the problem but I've showed them a couple of our torn articles. There were a lot more until I figured out it was the washer!!!!
We bought the washer-dryer set on May 28, 2012. The ripping started shortly afterward but it took us a while to realize it was the washer. We have hundreds of dollars worth of damaged clothes. The people at Whirlpool have been of little help. One asking me "Well, what do you want Whirlpool to do?" One of the service guys told me to keep washing and monitoring... monitoring what? I'm terrified of using my washer and see what will be the next torn garment. So right now I have two huge "statues" decorating my laundry room and piles of dirty laundry...
Just now another factory service guy changed the below. He said that he thinks the problem could be that the gap between the basket and the below is too wide (more than a finger can fit in there) he believes that's where the clothes are getting caught, between the basket and the plastic tub. There are some rough edges there. He was hoping it would take care of the problem although the gap is still there... so he was a bit skeptical. So, what am I to do? I would like a good response from Whirlpool and not the attitude I got before. Also, this is the 4th time I have to take off work for a service guy to come... I also had problems with the drain code F21. Please help!!!

      Melanie,
I can tell you I am pretty disgusted with Whirlpool. I bought the WFW9250WW 2/20/12 and it has ripped our clothes 2 times and this is the third time we have called Brandsmart to fix it. I called Whirlpool and they did not want to do even anything,

Why are you in business then even answering emails. I will send this to you as per your email.
      Thanks Vivek

As of today I pulled out another shirt from my closet to wear and lo and behold, more tears. We already had the washer repaired; bearings have  already been replaced along with the drum and gasket.and yet, every time I do laundry I am still finding  find more holes and torn up clothes., I am  getting more and more upset by the minute. I have virtually no more acceptable clothes to wear.  I should not have to worry about what will tear  every time I wash my clothes, nor should I have to hand wash everything when we own a $600.00 washer. We are no celebrities nor arewe rich enough to keep replacing clothes. This is unacceptable!!!!! manufacturer error NOT user error!!!!!

Although I see that this post is from 2012 and so is probably not active, I feel I need to write that this obviously has been a problem for at least more than three years and Whirlpool is still selling the same washing machine with this design flaw.  I have had the same problem for almost a year now.  My husband ordered a straight door glass as it was reported that the slanted one causes the problem.  After a month it started ripping clothes again.  I have tried different level of wash loads, turning the spinning cycle to low, I carefully check that the clothes are pushed way back in the drum before closing the door.  Nothing helps.

I've been putting up with destroyed clothes for over a year now, and today was the last straw! It was always hit or miss what the washer would chew up, but today it was a favorite sweater. I also tried different cycles, spin speed, etc but nothing has made a difference. I never thought to check for similar complaints on-line, but I am truly appalled how many people have experienced this and have the exact same damage being done to their clothes time after time. What is Whirlpool doing to fix this? Probably NOTHING!

We've been having this same issue for MONTHS.  Socks sucked into the drain, and MUCH more regularly - torn clothing.  So many torn shirts and shorts.  We've lost hundreds of dollars in damaged clothing.  We've seen this problem listed on other review sites as well.  We've had repair people out to work on it, and they've said there's nothing wrong.  One service person re-positioned the drain hose, claiming the water level was the problem...and still no success.  We called Whirlpool directly, and they couldn't even find our registration info, even though we were reading it to them from the "Thank you for registering your Whirlpool Washer and Dryer..." email they had sent to us.
We had an extended Warranty from Lowes, but it didn't do us any good since they kept saying there was no problem.  Seems like a design flaw with this machine.

I purchased my Whirlpool Duet Washer and Dryer 7months ago. My clothes have deteriorated ever since then. They are worn out and have holes in them. My towels are threadbare. Clothes are so worn out, that they rip through everyday use. Colors would fade within few washes. The stretch would go out of the fabric and the garment would lose it's shape. I am using delicate cycle on everything now, the clothes are not clean anymore. I did all the right things then called my dealer who referred me to Whirlpool. The dryer was over drying and shrinking my clothes (on delicate cycle). The sensor kept resetting the dryer. For the dryer, they are getting a new sensor. For the washer, after questioning me on all the usual things I should have done, they said the door needed a new shape glass. Meanwhile, I knew my problem was nothing to do with the door, it's uniform wearing out. I felt the drum and it was sharp and abrasive!! The drum had not been smoothed off from the other side. This explains why everything was so worn out, it was like putting my clothes through a sander. So now they are sending a service guy to look at it. They won't compensate me for the clothes I have ruined and they won't guarantee that the washer will not destroy any more clothes. They won't give me a load of wash to try out the repaired washer. I am not willing to put my new clothes in there and wait for the result. I would like  them to stand by their products and take full ownership. I want to get rid of these junk appliances and cut my losses. They won't buy back the washer/dryer. Don't have time to waste waiting for the service guy and then wait 3 months or more to find out how it worked and then the warranty is over.

Same problem I have hundreds of dollars in damaged clothing. No surprise, all my Whirlpool appliances have been lemons. If I have the opportunity to buy new appliances, they will not be Whirlpool!
